I need to watch more anime. I mean I can think of 20 I liked, but 9 favorites I really liked feels so hard. Granted I have a terrible memory.

5/5 - Houshing Engi is dope, it's pretty meh big time but somehow it makes up for it all, the high points are just really high and memorable to make it all worth it. Still couldn't quite crack my top 18. But I suppose top 20.

Also every new Dungeon Meshi chapter that comes out makes me like it even more. The story still has so much to offer, if I weren't so lazy I'd switch it for JoJo or Shamo on this 3x3. And who knows when it ends I might just add it on onto my main 3x3.

Mononoke is fantastic.

Pretty sure by propaganda he meant it's environmental propaganda since he thinks the movie paints the industry side as evil and the nature side as good. I don't know if I agree, though. When I watched it I thought it was pretty much saying both sides are justified in their own right, though the movie clearly was biased a bit towards the nature side.

I could be wrong, though, I watched it last like 6 years ago

Miyazaki loves his planes and trains too much to ever fully condemn industry.

That said, his adaptation of Future Boy Conan has the antagonistic nation of war, pollution, and industry literally named Industria.

Interesting, although I think if you see past the movie leaning towards industry it's still pretty well made. For reference, I usually dislike extreme shitty environmental leftists, but I was able to see past it in Mononoke Hime. Although admittedly the protagonist is a bit of a Gary Stu.
>>
>>156091675
Yes.
>>
>>156091841
how much more time did you want him to take? seems to me anymore and it would be shitty pacing
>>
>>156091766
Good execution can forgive many things, certainly, but I don't actually see the issue with it being an "environmentalist" film in the first place.
>>
>>156091907
Again, the fact that "he realized he was a disgusting human being" and tried to redeem himself was what I disliked.

I'm assuming you marathoned it. But I was reading it as it was coming out. If you were reading it and loving it for what it was, you'd also hate it after it did a 180.
>>
>>156091949
Because you're an environmentalist.
>>
>>156091985
yeah i binged it, i could see that actually

i was recommended to read it by a friend and i was told it was a coming-of-age, so i kind of expected it

if I were reading it as a comedy and a parody of death note, and it changed completely, then yeah i would probably share the same opinion as you
>>
>>156092015
What does "environmentalism" mean to you here? I acknowledge that I have more trouble understanding the contrary viewpoint on this issue than I do on most, so I'd genuinely appreciate the insight.
>>
>>156092129
>What does "environmentalism" mean to you here?
Three-hugging, tantrum-having, Al Gore cock-sucking, differing opinion-disregarding, un-objective (or more like, anti-objective), brainwashed hippy wannabe, pretty much.

>in b4 I'm disregarding different opinions too
Not exactly. I'm disregarding propaganda from the opposite camp. But if they were simple arguments, I could collate them and compare them with the opposite arguments in an objective way (for example, I understand we need renewable energy because non-renewable sources, by definition, will run out - while on the other hand, I can see how the evidence indicates people's impact on global temperatures is negligible despite the propaganda), which is something environmentalists are unable to do.

I feel that's a serious caricature of environmentalism and its supporters. Those traits may exist within individual environmentalists, but they can't and don't constitute the ideology, which I've always understood as: "Opposition to action on the environment that adversely affects human health and rest of the ecosystem." For instance (setting global warming far, far aside from this conversation), there's concrete evidence of how industrial pollutants such as mercury, lead, and coal cause serious health issues in humans. If you agree that such waste products are broadly harmful to us and the environment and should be reduced, and that we should pace our industrial development so as not to waste irreplaceable natural resources, I'd think you'd fit in with most environmentalists.

That aside, I actually don't see how Mononoke Hime fits your own definition of environmentalism, short of the nebulous "tree hugging".

>If you agree that such waste products are broadly harmful to us and the environment
I do.

>and should be reduced, and that we should pace our industrial development so as not to waste irreplaceable natural resources
I don't.

>I actually don't see how Mononoke Hime fits your own definition of environmentalism, short of the nebulous "tree hugging".
Because you believe the two previous statements are hard truths.

And that's where the problem lays. Mononoke Hime was all about how the industry should be stopped or, at worst, paced - same as your usual marxism-inclined environmentalist agencies. But the concept of adaptation is thrown out the window.

Take electric cars as an example. Fossil fuels (which happen to be mainly carbon-based) will be exhausted relatively soon. Yes. But what do treefuckers do? Mine a fuckton of lithium that will also be exhausted eventually and call it a day. Oh, and let's not forget to pay dem carbon footprint moral taxes. Meanwhile, important carbon research (ie that one japanese company researching batteries made from 99% cotton graphite) goes underfunded, because we need electric and we need it now.

And god forbid you disagree. I mean, you don't want to see any polar bears dying, do you, you ignorant right-leaning christian republican nazi shitlord?

I don't think the movie's argument is that all industry should be stopped or paced, but rather that it should be more considerate of the environment. It doesn't rule out adaption at all.

Rewatch it.

im the guy you replied to, 6/8

-anohana, -erased

i liked erased starting out, but it went to shit later on, what with all the terrible characters and straight up bad writing (his power literally only works when the plot demands it, the killer is the only suspect there, etc)

anohana i had major issues with for its melodrama and ghost cringeshit, but great op/ed and first episode. it had a lot of potential i think, it would have been great if the show revealed the characters actually developing into better human beings rather than crying their sorrows away every minute
>>
>>156093254
Industry is destroyed because it is unwilling to adapt. I'm not sure what I missed here.

Not the guy you're talking to but IIRC the protagonist is completely neutral to both parties and only gives a shit when Eboshi tries to kill the forest god. It's clearly biased for the side of environmentalism, and it did tick me off a little, but it's not extreme tree-hugging/al gore cocksucking/whatever.

I think you're exaggerating a bit too much

You're calling those who disagree with you "tantrum-having, Al Gore cock-sucking, differing opinion-disregarding, un-objective (or more like, anti-objective), brainwashed hippy wannabe...treefuckers", and then in the same breath saying that name-calling dissenters is such a childish thing. I hope you can see the disconnect.

You're also putting a lot of words in my mouth here. I would rather stick to the things I've actually said. For one: "harmful waste products should be reduced". I'm speaking about things like lead and mercury here. If you're against reduction, do you mean to say you think "things are okay as they are" or "we should use more"?

We also disagreed about pacing industrial development (such as human development of wilderness areas) and the preservation of natural resources. If you're against these things, what are you actually for? It sounds as though you're suggesting we let industry loose unrestrained to use as much of these resources as it pleases without regard for waste. If I'm misinterpreting, please let me know, as I'm not interested in strawmanning your positions.

Environmentalism doesn't necessarily mean death of industry though, it just means change in industry. You're forcing a false dichotomy here.

Can you link me to the interview? The only think I could find related was this: "During the Edo era, many beautiful forests were raised, but that was because trees were planted to finance a Han (feudal domain). So if someone cut even one branch off, they cut his arm or head off.... If we had only talked about this situation from the human's side, there would have been no forest. Because of such terrible power, the forests were born. Then, there is actually a dilemma between the issue of humanism and growing a forest. It is exactly the problem of the environmental destruction we are facing on a global scale. This is the complexity in the relationship between humans and nature. And since "this is a big theme of this film, I didn't want it to be a story about a bad guy." which is simply saying the complexity of humans vs nature is the main theme of the film, not that it was made to promote environmentalism

In the first place, no studio dedicates that much fucking budget on art and advertising just to promote environmentalism. It clearly had other meaningful themes as well, anyway
