Very much this, it's only a plot device to start up a fantasy story. Fantasy stories slipping / teleporting from one world to another is practically the same concept.

The problem is the market is starving for ideas and has now turned towards people who aren't professionals to feed this need. Sort of like gatcha pulls with what the net has produced.
