It happened with the Campione light novels which I read recently. The first few volumes are just super generic battle harem garbage but around volume 3 the fanservice ramps up off the charts and it becomes fun. I highly recommend it if you enjoy masturbating.

Tons of telling rather than showing. Character development happens almost entirely off-screen. Final revelation can be told by any half-brained idiot by episode 4, thanks to the aforementioned fuckhuge infodump that was mostly unnecessary.
