Why does everyone think Laius is a great fighter? He's resourceful and lucky, but the bigger monsters are primarily handled by Marcille and Senshi. He only dealt the killing blow to the Red Dragon, which is admittedly impressive but he only had one chance at it, sacrificed a leg to do it and the dragon was already suffering from a knife in its eye.

Mood switches in early chapters usually, around when antogonist finally show's up, and this is exactly what happend here.
Besides there's no rule saying when the mood of the story should drastically change.

Is anyone concerned at where the manga is going? I admit, I'm interested where the bigger picture of the series is heading. It's actually par on course for how DnD campaigns go so I'm used to the way it is but I really enjoyed the small-scale adventure of just murderhobo-ing and eating monsters as they go. I'm all for plot but I hope they still keep the goofy spirit of the early chapters as we delve into more plot focus arcs. That and juggling it well with the humor and plot.

Anyway, he's shown to be a pretty good fighter throughout the series. Not very flashy but the group as a whole are apparently not no-name adventurers and have easily dispatched enemies that lesser groups, like Kabras' group, have failed or have had trouble against.

Basically, Laius doesn't seem super mega Black Battousai of the Stampede Beater because he's not flashy and doesn't flaunt it. But at a minimum, he's a competent/good fighter.

If Laius hadn't been there the waterwalk spell on Kabru's food would have lifted and both the corpses and the food would have sunk underwater and been eaten by aquatic monsters. I don't approve when a savior steals the possession of someone who was saved but that's only when the possessions are in a static situation, when they would exist regardless of everyone's action. In this case the incompetence of Kabru's party had set their food on a course of self-destruction and the timer was running out. Laius prevented that and then took the food, resulting in zero net loss for Kabru.
