Bit overpriced, but I don't mind paying a bit more for the brick and mortar feel. It's a 10 minute drive away. Plus, it kinda evens out. Shipping to Australia isn't cheap. On top of that, it's still cheaper compared to say, Toys World. Hobby tools are more expensive though. They tend to not stock a lot of MGs though.

I don't know if there's other, better dedicated weeb stores around Brisbane other than "nerd" stores that occasionally have scales, nendos, or manga in their stock.

When to Sydney for the new years, and they have a much better store. A friend took me to it, Hobbyco, I think. The place's fucking packed.

Nice little place called Akiba Underground in the town of Clinton, Connecticut. Just opened last year, its actually really cool to have an anime shop in Connecticut (before that it was just generic comic shops or FYE in this state), doubly so out in a small town so you don't have to drive to shithole city or mall. I've found Barnes and Noble has a pretty good selection of manga and LNs, along with some figures and models (mostly DBZ prize figures and Gundam models, but I have seen a couple Nendos there). The local Fry's Electronics also has a good selection of anime there.
There is actually a store dedicated to anime where I live, but it's far away and in a shitty part of town so I've never been.

I only know one that's in Manchester, this building called Afflecks that has a bunch of shops for niche hobbies in it, I've only been inside the pub though, never the main building itself so I have no idea if their stuff is overpriced. From what I've heard from fellow expats and my own personal opinion, they mostly don't give a shit what colour you are. Just that you're a foreigner in general.

Also, you can't just "move to Japan". (which also effects how they treat you.) Especially out in the countryside. If you're visiting, the Japanese people will love you and treat you with a decent amount of respect. That's not to say you wont retain your gaijin force-field and still get stares anytime you do something they perceive as awkward or wrong. They say the treatment gets shittier the longer you've been there, once the excitement of "the new foreigner" wears off and you start making the same "mistakes" as all the foreigners in the past. In my opinion though, it may be a case of you just becoming more 'Japanese' in a sense and noticing all of the mistakes and social faux-pas that you're making. Becoming more self aware the longer you've been there.

A lot of expats don't recommend it and I can see why it would leave a sour taste in a lot of peoples mouths. I would though, if you can get into JET Program or anything similar it's more than worth it. JET actually pays for your flight which is a huge plus as it's actually government sponsored. Meanwhile some private companies require you to book your own flight, rent, etc. Thats if you're looking for the real "living in japan" experience. Other than that, if you can get in through other means of work visa, go for it

I wouldn't join the NAVY just to travel, that's a disservice for yourself. Especially if we get in to serious conflict you're fucked.

Otherwise, I'd save and travel the world if you can. It's expensive as fuck. Don't get me wrong, Japan's great I loved it. (I''m, actually considering getting a visa and going back to work there again.) But there is a fuck ton more to see in the world.

Afflecks is alright for shit, it can be a tad expensive though. It also only stocks merchandise, you likely won't pick up any anime or manga from there.
The second hand game shop can be pretty extortionate, but that's since second hand gaming equipment is priced against online independent sellers that don't actually move any copies.

Forbidden Planet I think is the only place to go to pick up actual volumes of stuff.

Kinokuniya in Seattle is pretty comfy, nestled near a Japanese grocery store. It's not all that weird to go and buy stuff there, or at the store, since it's in the middle of Chinatown in Seattle and you'll find people of all backgrounds.

People actually buy them for themselves. I happen to know several who do, some to the point of displaying some of their collection on their work desk.
The uniformity is actually a strong point. Fans of the format can get any number of pops and simply line them up and have it look no worse than the individual figures. With normal figures, different scales, poses and accessories mean you have to carefully curate your display to have it look decent.

I didn't know of any, so I just Google Mapped it. Apparently the closest one is an Anime/Skateboard shop. Looks about as hole-in-the-wall as it gets without being run in someone's parents' basement. Next closest is a MtG shop with an anime club. It doesn't really look like the sell any anime stuff though. And then if I go about 50 miles out, there's a nice looking place with what appears to be a fine selection of swords. It actually looks kind of cool, I might go there.
>>
>>156038177
So go solo. Getting around Tokyo is actually really fucking easy. Google will tell you what trains to use and what it will cost. And their crime rate is practically nonexistent.
Tell your friends that you're going to do your comic thing on Xday, then do it. Let them join you if they want, but don't let someone else dictate what you do with your limited time in nipland and be upfront and clear about what you're doing.

Man, Pacific Mall used to have an entire gunpla storefront called "Gundam Base" or something. I don't know how those people got away with it, but they were gone the last time I went, like last year. Still, the prices were nothin special. Just kinda cool to have something local.

>>
My city ain't got one. I know there are some in the country, but since pretty much all shopping in my hometown is relegated to the mall just outside of town, we don't get any of these super-nerdy stores downtown and instead have to deal with a whole bunch of pizza and sushi place restaurants. Closest thing that's actually left downtown is a game store located just next to my workplace, but they don't sell any anime stuff, so it's useless for these purposes.

And before you ask, no, the mall doesn't have any anime store either.
>>

The prices at Kinokuniya for English manga and LNs isn't different from, say, a typical Barnes&Noble: $10-$13 per volume. What is different is that kinokuniya is always up-to-date with releases and has a wider selection, especially with LNs.

My LGS made the wonderful decision to also stock a ton of anime merchandise in addition to TCGs and board games. The result was a bunch of weebs would come and hang out at the store and use the tables despite not actually playing anything. They'd get pissy if you asked them to get up so you could sit down for a game and the manager being a weeb himself didn't have the gall to kick them out for loitering. The only people they would move for were the group of niggers that played yugioh.

It's just Toronto. I would go to AnimeExtreme if I didn't feel like I would run into some next level autists while I was there. Besides, it's cheaper to order BDs and OSTs online (for the few occasions I even bother to buy physical copies) and other stuff is often either expensive or unnecessary.

Fan Expo is pretty great for finding random shit tho. The larger booths are often ran by actual retail stores and therefore have huge egos and won't bargain, but you can often get a deal if you go for a smaller booth. I got New Super Mario Bros. DS and Mario Kart DS for like $15 together last year. Cartridge only, but still fucking cheap either way. EB Games usually has alright deals at their booth too. I got a DSi XL for $35 last year, and a PSP Go for $35 the year before that.

There was a great shop in my town, it was there since I was a small child and didn't live there yet. Small location, but lots of variety in hobbies, mostly anime and TCGs, the most popular in the area, many tournaments were held there.
Then the owner decided to appeal to the skater crowd, a very bad move. More or less in 2013 it was closed, but not before a final Magic the gathering tournament, the guys there seemed to have a blast.

Now the biggest place to get manga and light novels is this big bookshop that has been always been there. For other stuff there's a small as shit place, but at least they have a Saber Marionette poster I have not seen elsewhere. For figures and toys there is an electronics store with quite a video game and vidya merch section. Warhammer hobbyists now have their own place for shopping and hanging out

And as for those TGC fa/tg/uys, they kept their hobby going by making business with stores in the capital, and people in this other city.
This last one is worth mentioning as it is pretty much the same as our city but with a beach, Both have similar size and population, tourist attractions regular movement (both visiting and moving in) because of tourism, study, work, etc. and only 2 hours apart. The main one is a pretty regular one, but seems to be becoming more western with more and more superhero comics and tabletop games (this is where I bought my first figurine). The other one is a bookshop opposite the beach which has manga and cool old magazines at very cheap prices, unlike everything else here which is overpriced. They even had an Asuka Ero Doujin in Spanish!

Shit is like the western world after the fall of the Roman Empire.

Oh and the old store, along with an adjacent one, became the first factory of this local alfajor brand. They are everywhere now and I feel kinda bummed out when I see their produce.

Used to go to a place called Masquerade Games where I would get my Gundam models from. They also fansubs for rent. It's been closed for at least ten years now.

Went to the NYC Kinokuniya this year when I was on a trip, there was some black dude talking about fucking genders with a couple of girls lmao.
Nice place tho, bought a bunch of Nendos, a couple of artbooks and the Nausicaa boxset.
Cashier was a total QT too.
And the melonpan was good

So am I the only person that says fuck you to the industry and does not contribute 1 cent to it? I mean I enjoy some stuff I guess, but enough to get merch or even go into a store to buy it. Or order it online.

There's an Abbotsford here in British Columbia, Canada, and I thought maybe it was the same one.

Idk if we have an anime store in my little town, but there are a lot of Asians in Metro Vancouver so there's quite a few in the malls and strip malls in the area.

No. In fact owning manga and LNs is less common if anything outside of nipland.

I live on an Island in the middle of the pacific where Japanese are the majority population and have been living here for generations. The only place that sells anime merch in my entire state is this place. I try to support them, but stuff is overpriced as to be expected. I just dont understand why there is only one store for anime goods on an island infested with Japanese ruling class.
>>
>>156041197
Mandarake
AmiAmi
Animate
Don Quijote (doubt you'll find anything else like it)
Any and all of the secondhand thrift stores.
>>
>>156039085
I've been to both and they each are pretty bad. Eagle Anime is overpriced plus has awful staff and Tomodachi is equally expensive and don't really have anything worth your money unless your big into gunpla. It's worth a stop if you're at MOA though

Don't know any, people usually buy manga from newsstands or book stores.

those swords are most likely made out of really cheap steel, so they are not much better than wallhangers. A "battle ready" katana usually costs hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.
