Let's leave aside the Lind L. Tailor incident, it was kind of a mistake, but all it did was confirm what L was already pretty sure of.
What was truly his biggest mistake was when he decided to change his killing patterns right after discovering that the police had noticed them, because he wanted L and the police to know he had access to their intel. I get that Light to cause friction between the police and L, but surely there were other ways of doing so. All Light did was narrow down the list of suspects from several million teenagers in Kanto to a few hundred teenagers related to the police. If he hadn't done that, L would have never ever found him no matter how hard he tried because there wouldn't be any clues.

The problem with this statement is that a LOT of innocent people are arrested and go to jail. For example, take The Central Park 5. They were in jail since the late 80s, early 90s. Anyone with a Death Note and heard about the case and heard about it would have, probably, targeted them. Yet, they were found innocent and exonerated almost 13 years later.

Many of the people in US jails are too poor to afford a good lawyer and might be exonerated years later due to DNA evidence. Things like this really didn't come up in Death Note, because the Japanese feel that if you were even accused of a crime that you must have done something wrong anyways. That's not true though. Sometimes it's just the cops' incompetence.

Christians, muslims, doomsday theorists, you name it. It would be a collective disaster.

There would be riots, massacres, killings completely independent of Kira. Modern society would likely start falling apart due to a mass panic.

And if Light still acted the same way as in Death Note, meaning announcing his mortality/the fact that he's a human somewhere on the planet...
There wouldn't be a "Kira investigation", it would be a worldwide manhunt of a scale never seen before, and as soon as they narrowed it down to the Kanto region of Japan, that area would have no doubt been occupied by military forces.
