Some of the chapters are really short, like 10-12 pages. And they feel even shorter when a lot of the fights have full page panels with little to no dialog.

Just understand that a huge amount of people who read Ippo are not happy with how the series has turned out. Some of them are so dissatisfied and aggressively averse to it that they will write tens of thousands of words about why, specifically, they disagree with events in the manga. That sounds autistic, right? It is - the actual problem is that, more often than not, they're *right*. The writing in the manga is insanely inconsistent (both thematically and in terms of direction) and often mind-numbingly repetitive. I just don't know what to tell you other than "don't read it".

Seems to me like the kind of manga you should read slowly. Don't try to crank through the entire thing in one go.

You should watch the anime, the OST alone makes it worth. The atmosphere can get extremely tense sometimes during the fights. Afterwards you have a large cast of characters that rarely fail to make you laugh and you see them journey through their lives and careers.
It does a great job of showing what it really means to TRY to become the best, it's one hell of a road to get there.

Basically, do you like laughing and hard workers? You will probably like Ippo. And you don't need to give two shits about boxing.
I have never done any sport for more than half a year and I LOVE sports manga / anime. They are always kick ass and you can actually learn about the sports in a way that does not bore you to death. I can enjoy watching a boxing match or even japanese highschool baseball, because I had a great angle to approaching them - which is in total contrast to sports I ever did before.

The only jaded Ippo fan(s) I've seen is that one hipster who posts on Dynamite Glove forums and attention whores about how much he hates Ippo (as a serial), but is dedicated to to the point of posting info-graphs and unironically praises Manabu as one of the only positive things about this manga.

Even before the second site died, that guy eventually 'retired' from Ippo's fandom when he realized it wasn't an echo-chamber for his shit-posting. I see that said jaded fan resurfaced on DG's new forum and is still as autistic.

As a whole, Hajime no Ippo never once sold itself as a deep and rewarding series with a payoff; one could easily be watched/read up until Ippo vs Sendo 2 and dropped, if it was half as bad as detractors claim it to be.

Personally, I think anyone who's read over 1k chapters of a boxing manga, where the main character routinely takes a backseat, to the rest of the cast, for volumes, at a time, somehow only caught the memo, after catching up that the series is repetitive, shallow and the author loves status-quo, as much as he loves dick-jokes, really needs to reevaluate how they spend their time.

Depending on your mileage, the next series could take upwards a year in a half to finish reading weekly. Yep. On one hand, I appreciate at least someone jotting down dates for the fights and miscellaneous tidbits about the series, since, by comparison, the Hajime no Ippo wiki page is what it is. I've seen a few of them, but it feels like they either die too fast or it just opens with straight shitposting, especially when when get /sp/ spillover, like around the last Mayweather fight. Admittedly, if I have a chance I still post in those threads, regardless of how shitty--or just try to do an image dump, when possible.

A lot of the people I see being overly negative either take it to 11 and over-exaggerate, like most people do on 4chan or it's just second-hand disdain, where they're just forming their opinion on Hajime no Ippo based on that hilarious oxygenmuscle image.

That said, I can understand coming to regret reading this manga, especially since it's showing zero signs of being relatively close to over. Along with the usual 'Ippo cycle' of hamster-wheel character growth.

But then I've already resigned to the fate of possibly never seeing the end of my favorite serie(s), since I also follow Hunter x Hunter, Berserk, One Piece, Jojo and Baki, in addition to countless series

Ashita no Joe is the beter boxing series with the better characters that don't get overly dramatic over a single loss and act like real human being instead of shonen archetypes.It also deals a lot better with the real-life consequences of boxing such as punch drunk syndrome or even death.

I'd say Baki is better just because it has little drama outside the fights.
I read up to chapter 200-ish of Ippo and then dropped it when Ippo was into some girl who worked a sweets shop and he had to fight her brother.
Having no shitty relationship drama just makes it much better.
Also I only liked Takamura Mamoru in Ippo, where as Baki has a bunch of nice characters.
