>>
Objectively yes
>>
Could be worse.
>>
Yes in terms of fleshing out and developing its characters.

I give it 10 minutes until that one faggot comes in to say that Satoshi calling himself a "database" and Oreki going by a dumb motto (which he plainly grows out of) undermines the whole thing.

It was decent enough, but the gary stu main character and the cringe worthy dialogue of the side characters brought it down a peg.

Does the "importance" of a mystery really matter to so many people?
Shouldn't the quality of a mystery be judged based on how thought out the clues and conclusions and structure is, not by the scenario itself. That's what adds excitement to a mystery, figuring/finding it out. Not the fact that's it's about a murder instead of a school betrayal or a missing diamond vs a missing earring.

Always seemed like a silly complaint regarding this series that I see oten.

They're known for their quality animation and sometimes for their quality direction. Writing isn't really a factor, it varies wildly, especially considering their source material. Good direction can sometimes overshadow it though, since a lot of storytelling can be conveyed through the visuals.

I think Hyouka had good character writing, but not phenomenal. The mystery plotlines were fine, but the characters really took center stage. However, It's overall package was extremely high quality.

If you think character development where a character changes his personality simply for the sake of the story having character development is good writing then you are the one who needs to go back to school.

There are plenty of great well written static characters in literature.

Yeah right.
Hyouka fucking exists for the character development. It's not "change of personality for no reason" the very core of Hyouka's story is the change in Oreki's point of view and lifestyle.
>>
>>155999196
People love to say this (and other KyoAni shows) have great direction. That's complete bullshit. They have great animation and art sure, but there are god-damn youtube vloggers with better cinematography than is in KyoAni shows. KyoAni's idea of an establishing shot is just showing you random hallways or people's legs and expecting you to know where they are at. This shit makes Shaft looks like geniuses when they're really bad as well.

Not really. Not all characters need to change in a story. And a character changing doesn't automatically make the story good. Of course this doesn't really apply to Hyouka, but you're speaking as though all stories are automatically good if they have the character change, or that static characters are inherently bad.

I really don't know what you're trying to prove with these screenshots. That Oreki is a bad character because he's smart? The mysteries in hyouka aren't that obtuse. Oreki isn't Sherlock level OP, he's just a clever high school student. Even if he did have an IQ uf 600 and solved every mystery by smelling the tuna that the student counsel president had for lunch two days ago it still wouldn't count against the show, since hyouka wasn't about the mystery, it was about the character growth.
>>
>>156005111
>Because I wanted to see how bad it was for myself and see it through to the end.
>Not sure why Kyoani faggots have such a hard time understanding this.

Realize this is your thought process:

> I hear X piece of media is really bad and so I check it out
> I realize I agree with the opinions I heard on X
> I still decide to continue watching X even though I derive absolutely no pleasure from it and no one has a proverbial gun to my head to make me finish it

Surely you must understand why people would inquire as to why you choose to continue to consume a piece of media that you dislike, no? If you feel you must finish something you start, that's fine, just know that people will question why you would continue to do something that you found out you dislike because normally, people who dislike something would choose to avoid it when they have the choice. You're obviously choosing to do something that goes against the flow so you're in no position to call people faggots for inquiring about your decisions.

Also, accept and acknowledge that you're not going to like everything under the sun. Just because you dislike X product doesn't make it a bad product.
>>
>>156005304
It's not.
And by the way, you posting screenshots and calling it bad is not an argument. Why are those specific lines of dialogue not appropriate for fictional works where metaphors are a huge part of the storytelling, like Hyouka? Why should every character in fiction talk the way you would?
>>
>>156004558
'good character writing' means realistic. That's why people throw around the term "three-dimensional" i.e. real life has three dimensions. There's pretty much nothing realistic about most of these characters. They are walking cliches with overexagerrated or underexaggerated emotions to give them a distinct personality rather than a realistic or believable one.
>>
>>156005304
>how dare this person speak in an informal manner about something that both parties will understand to his friend
You have literal autism. I'm inclined to believe that you don't understand metaphors or anything of the sort if you think there's anything wrong with that line.
>>
No.
The writing and situations doesn't let the characters shine even though the basis are there.
The mysteries are bullshit too. No way to solve them with the clues presented.
It's also very dull.
Overall it's terribly written.
>>
>>156005494
>The mysteries are bullshit too. No way to solve them with the clues presented.

>>
>>156005520
>Brainlet spotted!!!
I'm sure you figured the smell in the first episode without any clue or way to know what it was.
Surely.
As well as the meaning of Hyouka too!
>>
oreki and chitanda don't get together, not even close

so no
>>
>>156005491
When people use the term "three-dimensional", they aren't describing how realistic the characters are, they are describing their depth of emotion, motivation, and development. A one-dimensional character has a limited range of emotion and undergoes no character development. Think of someone like Aqua from KonoSuba. She's great for comic relief, but there's no depth to her character. What you see is what you get, and she never changes or learns anything over the series. Oreki has multiple dimensions. He says that he avoids interacting with people because it's not worth the effort, but he actually feels lonely and isolated. When people reach out to him he starts to feel valued and by the end he volunteers himself to work hard for the girl he fell for and see's the world from a new perspective.

As for exaggerated emotions, I honestly have no idea what you're talking about. You'll have to provide an example, but everyone seemed more than grounded to me, especially by anime standards. I'm not sure what makes them cliches, either. Because they are high school students? Cliches aren't really a bad thing, if the characters still have emotional depth.
>>

I think this is true, however "realistic" would depend on the reality of the world the characters live in, not irl. So in this case, being an anime, I think having over or underexaggerated emotions is legitimate and doesn't mean they are unrealistic/unbelievable, their entire world is over or underexaggerated for artistic effect.
