In all honesty, I genuinely believe a Yugioh with Speed Format field, 1 Normal Summon/Set and 1 Special Summon per turn and 8000 life points would be perfect.

Limiting the Special Summoning to once per turn reels everything back to an extent, the smaller field makes players think about what they should set from their hand into the backrow rather than just "set 4, pass".

Original Life Point value keeps the games just long enough.

You know your game is in a good state when either player has the ability to win outright on the second turn.

Konami knows what the players want, and what they want is just 10, 11, 12 or even fifteen monsters on the field in one turn.
I honestly don't understand why they don't expand the field and put 20 monster zones there and just expand the extra deck to 40.

Also the graveyard.
When I play these other slow, turn based games, I get bored.
But in Yugioh, I just put everything into the graveyard and it makes it fast.
I like fast things, and Konami gets me, they know what I want.

What they should really do is just start with your whole deck in the graveyard and work from there.
Because pace, drawing cards, searching cards, that's lame.

Instead of having 5 Monster Zones to summon anything to like Battle City and later, you have 1 Ebin Monster Zone you can Fusion/Synchro/etc... Summon monsters your important monsters to, and 5 Main Monster Zones to summon weaker guys from the deck (and grave).

The most common post-2007 Yugioh decks relied on managing to summon multiple moderately powerful Extra Deck monsters which backed up eachother's weaknesses and controlled the field in combination, set up plays or kept combos going. With only 1 zone to summon Extra Deck monsters to, all of these kind of decks are unplayable ;_;

The new Link Monster decks in the 2017 Starter Pack circumvent this rule and behave like pre-2017 decks did without the restriction (up to 7 moderately powerful Link monsters working together).

Link Decks like Star Grails, the few Main Deck Monster Only archetypes like Kozmo, and True Dracos, and decks that rely entirely on the main deck to bring out a single Extra Deck boss monster like ABC and Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon are the only decks that can stand up to the Meta now.

S1 started off with Yuuya struggling to cope with losing his father, forming a deck and identity of his own without him, and his ladyfriend's inability to depend on him in duelling (as protection) due to all this. There was clear direction as Yuuya aimed to overcome it all and regain control of his life. Also lots of romance, betrayal, and the background conspiracy as to what risk Reiji, Shun and the mysterious Masked Duelist really posed to Yuzu.

S2 dropped this and was suddenly about ending civil war in the 5Ds universe, duelling military leaders, and then purging an ancient evil in S3.

None of the S1 motivations and established character drama was ever even acknowledged from S2 onward. Fans felt let down to have no resolution even after the final S3 baby sideplot fizzled out. Yuuya just beats everyone and goes pro and that's it. Yuzu never explicitly gains Yuuya's trust in the end either. He just jumps into the next duel instead like it didn't even matter.

The voice of Pegasus knocked it out of the park with his camp nature being fun to watch but he could also be imposing when he needed to be as the fucking creator of the game. His toon deck was the coolest shit at the time but he loses a bit of credit since he used mind reading and created Relinquished just to win but overall very cool.
Marik seems more like an edgy teenager than villain as he tries to hide the fact that he fucking sucks at Duel Monsters because even after his "original OC do not steal" posseses him he would have lost to fucking Mai and Joey if not for random bullshit. But my god he does things to my vagina
Noah is a literal child and non-canon and the less I talk about season 4 the better
