might be a stupid question, but why is it playing in theaters again? Didn't it already go through like 6 months?
>>

Amerilards have only just got it in theaters.
>>

I'm sorry anon.... I hope I'm not in the same boat

>>

Still gonna see the sub later, but if you've got no other option, the dub is pretty ok
>>
>>155989807
Dang.... Where you at now?
>>
>>155989942
I'm actually surprised how much I enjoyed the dub.

I prefer the dub to the sub
>>
>>155989019
I'm in Atlanta, planning on seeing it again at least 2 more times before it leaves.

Midtown Arts Cinema? But then again I could use a bite at the same time too, and there's that place in duluth.

>Also which Mitsuha pose makes you blush the hardest?
Cake Mitsuha running
>>
>>155989972
I do too anon.
>>

>>
>>155989244
It would be so much easier to see it alone then to go along with some random anon. For all you know he could be a total fucking autist and more annoying than just going by yourself. It really isn't a big deal.
>>
>>155990020
Midtown arts, regal off i85, and Duluth are all good although Duluth is kinda closer.
>>
>>155989972
My last dub was the GuP movie (which I also saw in theaters), so my expectations were pretty low to begin with. Still, it's refreshing to see some actual emotion from the English VAs and not have a 40y/o woman playing Mitsuha's imouto
>>
>>155989019
In SF Bay Area some time next week.
>>
>>155990026
>>155989972
how did they deal with the whole "watashi/watakshi/boku/ore" exchange in the film to translate it to dubbed?
>>
>>155990152
They said "girl, gal, uhh guy". Not the best translation but acceptable I can't think of a joke aside from the dialect / accent thing.
>>
>>155990152
If you're referring to the scene where Mitsuha first switches, she says "There was a girl... Gal? Guy?" or something like that.
>>

>>
>>155990592

Yah I can make that, it works.
>>

There's nothing wrong with going it alone. What's worse is not going and missing out on something you'll love.

>>

I've seen it three times in theaters.

Once online with a friend.

Going to see it again tomorrow.

Anons, I'm from a no-name country in Europe and I am going to NYC on a finalist trip next week, is it airing there? And will it still be airing next week?
>>
>>155991564

dunno about a smaller independant theater, but its leaving on the 19th in most places in the northeast
>>
>>155989019
This is against the rules. Take this meatspace shit to /soc/.
>>
>>155991056
Right! That's what I told myself at least...

The second time I went the ticket lady stared at it for a long time and eventually asked me "Are you by yourself?" I didn't know how to respond so I just said "Yup!" as happily sounding as I could. She then said "Enjoy...".

Is this a normal interaction or was she silently judging me?
>>
>>155991626
Is it still airing on the 19th, or is the 18th the final day? I'm arriving at NYC late on the 18th and we probably won't get to do anything until the next day.

I've seen it twice, both times I took a malefriend with me to go see it. I was thinking of seeing it again tonight from the rip online but I'm pretty sure it will decimate me this time. anyone else keep coming back to it like an abused spouse?

First time I've ever been glad to be asian. The audience was something like 90% asian so I didn't stand out going alone.

Wellll we could do the 10:30 showing tonight if you're up for it at the regal in i85

Also looks like Duluth isn't doing any screenings after 2pm... We're kinda stuck with Regal 24. Wanna do tomorrow at 5:30pm?
>>

where anon?
>>
>>155989963
I'm up north, not in GA anymore
>>
>>155992355
I didn't expect to enjoy the film as much as I did.
My main gripe with the film would be how quickly Tessie agreed to blow up his dad's power plant. I was expecting like a fake bomb threat or small explosion, but he just blew the whole plant up.
>>
>>155992320
Then why not the midtown arts cinema? That's a bit closer for me, at least. Regal 24 is a little out of the way.

Well, either's fine, really.

>>

>>
>>155992638
Obviously sub, no way I'm watching some 40-year old woman play qt mitsuha.

Huh, guess they're not actually showing it at midtown tomorrow. Lets go with regal at 5:30 then, like you said. I'll wear a blue shirt to stand out.
>>
>>155992495
Regal 24 is doing a dub screening at 10:30 and a sub screening at 8pm
Regal Avalon is doing a sub screening at 7:30 and a dub screening at 10pm
Midtown is doing a sub screening at 7pm and 9:30pm

Both were good but Mitsuhas English voice was pretty bad when she talked softly, it sounded like she was trying too hard. But the subtitles had its own problems. "I shouldn't for her saké ." Hopefully, the subs get fixed for the BD release.
>>
>>155989019

I don't think Shinkai have to worry too much for his next movie because as long as he knows what made his current movie successful and put that towards his next movie, I think it should be fine. Judging from his interviews, he tried to specially make this movie entertaining and make the audience very happy so, I very much believe in him.

Just saw this based off the good reviews. Was great except for the weebs who kept giggling everytime they understood a word. "Haha she just said Baka lol!!!kawai"

>>155995431
I'm curious what a better translation would be, regardless I thought that fit with the scene well enough.
>>
>>155998964
That's not a translation issue, it's a typo, sake shouldn't have the accent, it's not the alcohol sake.

They just did a "replace all sake" in the script, and forgot about that line. Means they didn't check it.
>>
>>155999309
Interesting, I assume the Japanese word for her "sake", and the drink "sake" are different so I wonder where in the chain that one happened.

In any case I thought the subs were pretty good overall, they dealt with the gender noun issue early on in a way that was pretty easy to quickly understand. I don't think they subbed any dialect references in, but they mention it directly. So it's easy enough to imagine her speaking in a rural dialect without the need to throw a bunch of y'alls into the translation.

Both times I was the only loner for some reason.
>>
>>156002426
It's a crapshoot with what type of audience you'll get for this movie. My first showing was subbed and had four other people besides me, two were alone with one couple (the guy was wearing a fedora). My second showing was also subbed, had around 20 people and most were groups/couples, about one or two other loners. My third showing was dubbed, there was one Asian couple and a group of obnoxious fucks who laughed at every slightly amusing part (I fully expected this to happen since it was the dub). I went with my sister for that showing and there were no loners that I noticed. I was kind of pissed off before the second showing when I saw how many people were piling in but it turned out to be the best experience.

>>
>>156009586
I agree with >>156009635, following Shinto traditions is more of a means to fulfill a family-deep oath in preserving the connection with their God and blessings. Mitsuha is forced to her miko duties as a side role while being allowed to have a regular country teenager's life, but obviously she hates having to do the miko traditions. Taki is an outsider to the traditions and purely used to the city lifestyle, yet he is open-minded to the culture and treats the traditions fairly seriously out of obligation to do Mitsuha's duties while in her body. It's a cultural act that can be done for the sake of doing it and not disgracing one's family line, but it cannot be outright forgotten or neglected like a religion. Mitsuha's dad took that route and had to leave the family because of it.

Saw this movie yesterday in the Motor City. Really enjoyed it, but I just left it at that for a while. I was questioning why everyone was so raved by this movie.

But now I can't stop thinking about it. There's always bits and pieces of the movie in my head, like the train scene, comet scene or crater scenes. There's this growing emptiness feeling after watching this film.

Does anyone else feel this way? Why do I feel like this all of a sudden? What have you done to me, Shinkai?

Dude go to therapy. What you're experiencing is regret and sadness you've bottled up and the movie is triggering an intense emotional reaction.

I was in the same boat, I saw it in a matinee and promptly went to the gym. Halfway through the workout, I started feeling restless and agitated.

Later on I couldn't make myself eat. I started feeling an intense sadness. I felt trapped in my apartment. I started to cry.

My whole weekend went to shit and on Monday my boss asked if I was ok. I wasn't and asked if I could go home.

I made an appointment the next day and now feel much better and have a good grasp of what I need in my life.

Upon second viewing, the people who complain about them not noticing the year are retarded. Right when they're talking about the swithing they specifically say that their memories are hazy. The dub was good but I can't stand Taki's voice actor anymore.
He's been in so many roles already that I no longer hear the character anymore, just Michael Sinterniklaas. Which is really disappointing because he has the ability to widen his vocal range and sound somewhat different from his normal voice, but when it's a high school age kid he sticks to the same damn voice.

It's a sad thought to try and consciously create memories (instead of, well, living). But I know you're right. And I guess a bittersweet memory like this is fitting for a Shinkai general.

>>156045759

Oh yes.

>>156045823
>>156045906

"Golden hour" was the predominant one.
>>
>>156045823
Twilight, from "two-light", which is what twi- meant. Two lights in the sky at the same time, the sun and the moon. Then they call it "golden hour" and then a kid in class says "my grandma calls it magic hour". Both of which refer to the time of day, either dawn or dusk, where the colors are more red and the light is softer. A term used for photography and film.

Not a terrible translation, but I had to look up what the hell golden/magic hour meant and the fact that it was film related and not general spookiness kind of detracted from it. Though it wasn't just bullshit.
>>
>>156045974
Only one person ever came down and went to Disney World with me,
was quite a fun time.
>>
>>156045823
"magic hour" was what I took issue with. It's way more trite than the Japanese etymology that they go through in that scene, with "kawatare-doki" meaning "Who-is-that time" (which echoes the whole "who are you?" motif of the movie).

Golden hour sounds like golden shower. I think I'll give the subbers a pass on this one.
>>
>>156046093
Honestly "blue hour", another term from film but when the light is more blue instead of red, would be much better. It has connotations of mystery and confusion in French culture, specifically referencing being unable to tell if it is day or night.

>>
>>156046236
>>156046241
It's still used just as much as golden hour but at least there is some Western cultural baggage associated with it as opposed to being solely a technical term.
>>
>>156046093
They use magic hour in the summit scene, which sounds better. Its honestly about as good a translation as you're going to get for that, outside of leaving it as is.
>>
>>156046675
The big issue is no matter what you're gonna lose the dual meaning of twilight+who are you that's present in the Japanese word which is really the important part.
>>

A boy falls in love with a girl.

Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.

But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

How is going to watch one odd movie revealing your power level? It's a movie, and it just so happens to be animated. Fucking Avatar was more animated than 3dpd movie. You would have went to see Frozen if you had kids, you would have went to see Spirited Away yourself because it won an Oscar and you're an upstanding and cultured man who does not prejudice against the form.

Just fucking go see it like any other movie. If she questions the choice, you can hint at "wanting to start liking things she likes", but don't overplay it to the point of creepiness, just throw that out and say you've heard by word of mouth this was a really good movie and it's anime too so you're curious to see what she likes.

Last thing anon, if this is not bait - stop having fucking secrets in your relationship. Take it from a guy married for 6+ years. It can bite you in the ass hard. Pray that your gf is good sport about your love for anime whenever you break that to her. Don't dump it on her all at once either, but start working on coming out about it right now. It will be a big test to see if she buys your story about hiding it because your father gave you shit for it before, and later because you didn't want to appear as a creepy weeb to her. If she's good about it then it's a keeper.

Also don't be a creepy weeb.

I bet this is bait anyway, but fuck, it's not like I have anything better to do.

None of the theaters in my area had the poster sadly :(
>>
Looked up some sunset/dust info here: http://www.gaisma.com/en/location/gifu.html

Seems that in October around the time kataware-doki took place, it would've lasted around 25 minutes, from around 5:15 to 5:40. So yeah, plenty of time to execute the plan afterwards too.
>>
>>156054193
What time did the comet actually fall in anyway? It split at something like 7:30pm and it would have taken at least a few hours to reach the surface after that.
>>
>>156054334
think it was at like 8:40
>>
>>156054334
>>156054395
also you'd think that scientists would've been able to calculate where the meteorite was gonna land...

Pretty difficult to be certain actually. Not enough time to track it.

Orbits are known within a margin of error, which is why things we have orbits for have a percentage chance of striking Earth on known near passes.

Anyway, I think in the LN it said that they did predict a Japan landing point, but that it would be somewhere remote and unlikely to cause casualties. Of course, if it hadn't landed directly on a village that would have been the case.
>>
>>156054334

2032 local time.

>>156054414

Anon it took the Boxing Day Tsunami to spur the international community to invest in warning systems for the world's mot predictable disaster. Trajectory caclulation isn't even the main problem.

Are you the Prairie anon who was saying he'd have to fly?

Either way, impressive feats, both of you.
>>
>>156054490
Ok, the LN didn't say they predicted it would land in Japan but rather that because it was night in Japan they would have good viewing of such an extraordinarily rare even.

What they did say was that because comets are made up of mostly ice, even if it did have a rocky part to it the chance of it landing anywhere with people was remote.
>>
>>156054608
Nah I live in Prince George BC. Drove all the way to Edmonton to see it with some people I knew. Was going to have to drive up to Alberta anyways for Easter to visit family anyways so wasnt actually only to see the movie (though it was my main purpose)

They probably needed to know the weight for that, and they most likely didn't have enough time to calculate it and then get word out to the town in the middle of the sticks that "hey, you're gonna get smashed by a comet."

>>
>>156058490
I really liked how Tessie's character was handled. You could really tell at first that he had a quiet, one-sided crush on Mutsuha and gradually came to peace with it and got over her. The scene when he and bodyswapped Taki are broing out over their terrorism plans was fantastic.
>>
>>156058490
>>156049116
Japanese always have boxes of tissues around. While they probably use them for fapping as well the main purpose is nose.
>>
There was a Japanese guy who saw it more than 100 times and you guys still being indecisive about whether to go alone or not baka
Just fucking do it
>>
>>156058569
Yeah, every time I've seen it, I've paid close attention to his scenes and how his feelings progress. I think the time he finally gets over it is when they're trying to evacuate the people, and Mitsuha starts crying because she can't remember Taki. The body language and animation in that conversation is pretty amazing.

Also the desperation with which he keeps yelling for people to evacuate. His seiyuu did a good job.

13, two of them in theaters.

I still get the same feelings of melancholic longing and bittersweet happiness each time.
>>
What the fuck has this movie done to me?
>go to braves game tonight
>having a gay time with friends, sweet view of the skyline, can just barely see stone mountain
>sun is getting lower in the sky
>sun drops below the horizon
> oh shit it's kataware-doki
>feel like I got kicked in the chest
>>
>>156058655
That is just way too many times.
>>
Does rewatching the movie this many times not dull your feelings? This is my favorite anime film but I'm happy with my two theatre screenings + skimming at home for reaction images.

Maybe it's just me, but art feels like a happiness drug where you build tolerance if you ingest the same thing too many times. And it takes months to lose that tolerance.

I haven't watched any anime since the Toonami staples when I was a kid, and saw the dub yesterday alone because I had heard about the film and was curious.

I liked it a lot and was one of 4 people in the theater, so it was a super comfy time.
