What's going on?

It's interesting how the sound direction can impact your appreciation of an OST made by Sawano.

AoT knows when the right piece should play and even decompose the tracks to obtain a specific sound.
On the other hand Re:creator just blast whatever insert song they have in stock everytime there is an action scene and doesn't even care if the song fits the scene. Same for the instrumental track. It's like they labelled each track "funny scene", "sad scene", "tense scene",... and start playing them without paying attention to the context.

The thing is that just as most viewers don't really know much or care about "animation" (or just the production part in general) most people also don't give a poop about the OST. This is more generally applicable since solid sound directing can make the soundtrack resonate with the show. One of the better and overall noticeable examples even by people who don't really pay attention to this kind of thing was Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica which elevated many ofKajiura's tracks through very clever and impactful uses in the series itself. We can contrast this with Pandora Hearts and Fate/zero which also have Kajiura's compositions from the time (2009, 2011 and 2012). All three OSTs include her usual traits of hers yet due to strong sound directing, Madoka's OST made more lasting impression. (Safe to say that the nature of the series itself helped, but it's logical to assume that the OST itself and its presentation/usage was a bit which helped the show on its way to success.)
