I didn't care for Mononoke. Totoro felt like it cut off far too soon, as if there was far more to be told that didn't make it into the movie. Nausicaa literally did cut off far too soon, probably around the 2nd book out of 7 in the manga; it's quite a disappointment to see the movie.

I've not seen Spirited Away or Porco Rosso yet, though.

I certainly plan to. Most of my recent Ghibli watching was due to a lot of them going on sale nearby for $12 apiece; I decided to finally break down and pick up several. I'll probably grab a few more if I find them at a decent price.

Kiki's was fairly good and a nice find-your-way story, just not one of my top picks.

Spirited Away definitely. I've seen a few other Ghibli movies but they really never entertained me as much as that movie

The best part was Anna finding out her grandmother's situation, letting go of her resentment over her grandmother dying and leaving her alone, and letting go of her own self-worthlessness and accepting her current family.
At least, that's what I felt to be the core part of the movie.

I agree, but Anna's journey didn't interest me in the least. I almost stopped watching because of how she was lashing out to everyone even though she could've been in a much worse situation. All the past Ghibli heroines have much tougher situations. Sen was much more relateable even though she was also a moody preteen, but quickly realized her predicament vs Anna being a stubborn and ungrateful little shit.

My problem with a lot of Ghibli movies is that they tend to peter out and that their themes aren't very interesting. They start out grand, but completely lose my interest and excitement as it goes on. Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away are big offenders of this.
