I think the word you are looking is spin-off. Season 2 normally implies a continuation not look at the same events from other character's perspectives.

It's continuing an over arching plot. At least, I hope it picks up the loose plot threads the original left hanging.

When I think of Spin-Offs I think of Xena, Angel, The Cleveland Show. Those are major departures from the original.
