The anime is cheap, shallow entertainment, so Onikakushi-hen is adapted well because it's the most cheap, simple story to begin with. The anime's later story arcs fall flat because they ask for an emotional investment that isn't possible when the anime is just B-horror movie shlock.

It was supposed to go straight from Tatarigoroshi to Meakashi, but then Meakashi got delayed due to circumstances like Ryukishi hooking up with professional composers like dai and zts, so he decided to make and release Himatsubushi in the meanwhile, which he wasn't intending to do at first since it made Rika's motives obvious too early.

I wonder if there's anywhere to read about this forgotten history, it sounds like Ryukishi had a wild time in 2003/2004
