The thing with Japanese names is you won't really know how it's pronounced unless they say it since most characters have at least 2 pronunciations. 四葉 can be read as yotsuba as well for example.

MOAR Translations!
>>
I watched the dub today, and I don't think it holds up. It gets the job done if you can't watch the sub for whatever reason, but the sub is definitely better.

I mean, the translation is fine, the voices are good, and the actors are professional. It's just the same problem with every dub that the lines don't sound as natural, because they have to be rushed or stretched to match the timing.

jesus christ it's like you people don't read every single one of these threads religiously. I see this question every damn 5 minutes.

something along the lines of "A girl..., a gal? a boy."
>>
>>155856129
Taki's friends ask Mitsuha why "he's" late, and Mitsuha starts to say something like

>A girl gets lost in the city easily.

They stop her on "girl", so she says

>gal?

They shake their head, so she changes it to "boy" and completes the line. But the problem is that they wouldn't automatically assume that the word "girl" was self-referential, because it came at the beginning of the sentence. If anything, they'd assume that Taki was telling them he ran into some girl, which was why he was late for school.

It's really just the two examples, and the relationship between Taki and Mitsuha doesn't really play up their age difference either. Even when she meets her present Taki, he doesn't look noticeably younger than he does in his present. By the time they meet in real life, the age difference barely matters any more.

>>155856404
Crushing on an older woman is really rather common for teenage boys and navigating those feelings is a strong representation of growing up because it's part of a desire to enter an adult world and present yourself as an adult.

In Garden of Words it was more about a teenager that was in over his head and an immature adult that found the strength to not retreat back into her safe zone and cross a line she knew she shouldn't cross.
In Your Name it was more or less just a teenage guy that was almost supernaturally mature, capable and talented for his age. Though a 3 year age gap is pretty much nothing by the time both people are in their 20s anyways so it's hardly an older woman thing at that point.

Isn't it the opposite? The MC of Garden of Words was more mature than everyone in his class. He already knew what he wanted to do with his life, and he had the talent to achieve it. Meanwhile, Taki, though cool, didn't seem especially mature or talented.

The MC of Garden of Words had maturity for his age, but that's different from being an adult, or being mature enough to approach a relationship with an adult as an equal. The fact that he couldn't even really see that is one of the things that tips you off to the fact that he's still just a teenager. Actually having a relationship with the teacher probably would have been very bad for him, and she at least had the maturity to recognize that. That was kind of the point of the movie, since the teacher was struggling with her own immaturity and inability to handle the adult world.

>everyone says that you only like Kimi no Na wa over Shinkai's previous films because it had a happy ending
It's not just the ending. It's the whole movie that has a different tone. 5 Centimeters Per Second and Garden of Words were both too somber. They lacked the life and humor that Kimi no Na wa has.

>jokes
>gags
>energy

That's why people like it (aside from just how clever it all is). Nobody wants to see characters acting melancholy for 90 minutes. People want to feel good about life.

The version I saw was pretty clumsy but got the point across.

>Well I (feminine pronoun) got lost so-

It played because even though the subtitle was "I" the only accompanying dialogue was watakasi/boku/ore. Not like that was a joke that would even work unless you understand the significance of the pronouns anyway.

Well, Shinkai himself said that the film is a meditation on post-quake culture. Before 2011, he thinks that Japan was in decline, and his movies were about dealing with loss and moving on despite that fact. But after the Tohoku earthquake, having seen the destruction, he figured that no, Japs shouldn't go quietly into the night, and instead fight to remain relevant and be proactive in life. Kimi no Na Wa is about whatever it takes to chase your ambition, to not let the world walk over you sitting down. That's why the tone is so different, this is a film about living life to the fullest, rather than the tragedy of loss.

Something I noticed on the second viewing: Taki's plan to save the town hinged on him knowing the blast radius of the comet. If he hadn't spent hours and hours pouring over every bit of information he could find on the incident, he wouldn't have known that the high school was a safe zone.

I like that, because it shows that it takes more than just guts to change things. Knowledge and preparation are important, too.

>mfw at the marker drop scene a group of autistic GIRUGAMESH types start laughing hysterically
That scene fucking decimated me the first time I watched it and these fucks are just laughing their asses off. Reminds me why I don't associate with anime fans IRL.
>>
>>155859311
Yeah when I saw the dub there was a group of college guys, a lot of them laughed at it.

I guess the surprise of it could be humorous, but that requires the viewer to have such little empathy towards the characters. Which by how the scene is set up, you should be feeling empathy, you should feel bad for them.
>>
>>155859311
That's horrible. Why would anyone laugh at that scene?

Girls in my theater laughed every time they did the breast groping gag, but that was intended to be funny at least.

Frozen created the same problem with a lot of audiences. Incidentally, it was a film that Shinkai studied.

While it sounds like the people in your case were genuine autismos, a lot of normalfags in fact respond to sudden emotional discomfort with laughter oftentimes.

That's the point, and also the reason they never really noticed the difference. Whenever something unexpected came up they likely just assumed it was some aspect of their lives they didn't fully understand yet, like a random holiday.

They're not terrible. Points for Noda being able to do the English version too. Can't think of many other Japanese singers that can do English that well. It helps keep the feel of the movie to have the same voice doing the theme music.

There are parts though where the English lyrics get a bit awkward. Some parts fit really well though; the first half of the second verse of Dream Lantern fit really well rhythmically and match the meaning of the Japanese version well. But in other parts it's clear Noda has to clip syllables and particles to make things fit.

IMO, it still works better than some other songs with English like Hiroyuki Sawano's BRE@TH//LESS.

It's not really about an absolute avoidance of dubs. Mitsuha's voice and accent is just too perfect and I've listened to the songs too much, so it'd be bizarre and would take me out of the movie so I'd ne unable to fully enjoy it.

Kind of sad that they're barely giving this movie two weeks of theater time in the US and essentially zero advertising. It bet it could've been a smash hit if anyone knew about it or at least if they had given it more time for word of mouth to spread. I mean it set records in a bunch of other countries that it had a chance in, but for one of the biggest movie markets Funi barely even lifts a finger to promote the movie. Such a disservice to a great film.

It probably didn't cost them that much to dub, considering that they hired regular voice actors, rather than famous Hollywood actors. So if the film only makes $3 million in the US and Canada, that's a tidy profit for FUNimation.
>>
>>155860522
is that new for Funi at all though? shin Godzilla (also amazing) only showed like twice in my town but we've had 2 weeks of 5 showings a day at 3 theaters for your name. they make dumb decisions in advertising really often.
>>
>>155860522

considering there is nothing else out right now, they really dropped the ball. But a few threads ago people commented that they might just be doing this to get the BD / DVD rights so they are just half assing the theatrical release.
>>
>>155860522
It's not by ghibli so there just isn't the same kind of money available to promote it. It's also in that awkward place where it's an animated movie not aimed explicitly at children so mainstream american culture doesn't know what to make of it. The demographic it appeals to is something that they still vehemently pretend doesn't exist

The problem is that naming nuances are a cultural thing you can't educate an audience with no prior knowledge of just in subtitles alone. A knowledgable viewer will pick up on them without the subtitles, and an unknowledgeable one won't understand the distinction at all, so there's no real point in including them. Movies have to presume a general audience.

Nah second time watching it is definitely the best experience.
You catch a lot of little cues about the switched timeline, you realize why the tear up when they no longer switch, you recognize the scenes during the OP, you more clearly notice their feelings for each other building and all sorts of other stuff.
It's a movie you're meant to watch once, let it sink in for a few days+, then watch it again.
First time I watched it my eyes just got a bit watery, but I didn't cry. I also just chuckled a bit at some of the jokes and such
Second time I full on cried, laughed heartily etc. It's absolutely a movie meant to be viewed a second time.

"much worse" is relative.
If it's something that's actually bad but socially acceptable, it slides off and people don;t even acknowledge it. If it's something innocuous but not socially acceptable, it's social suicide. The best you get is the quiet death where nobody says anything to you but silently agree to never treat you like a human being again.

It's easier to get away with telling people that you've been arrested for physically assaulting an ex-girlfriend than admitting you went to watch an anime movie at the ripe age of, actually any age really. I remember kids in elementary school giving one another shit over the pokemon movie. It's just the way things are.

Unless you're asian of course, because then people just assume that appropriating japanese media is part of your cultural identity.

That's my problem. I'm actually pretty good at socializing until the conversation steers towards something that might embarrass me/make me feel uncomfortable. Basically turns me into a giant pussy when it comes to social iniation. Reminds of this time in high school when this upperclassman asked me "who are your friends dude? Do you even hang out with anyone?"

Finding somewhere with less light pollution and either a higher vantage point, a sizable body of water, or an open field are more important than geographical location. You also need enough cloud cover for light to reflect off of but not enough to block it out entirely.

I'll disagree with the other anon; natural clouds are better than pollution.

Dude, watching anime isn't this huge stigma unless you make it one. Most people don't give a shit, they are way too worried about their own shit. Now yeah, middle schoolers are savages and you might not be comfortable in your own skin at that point, but any time after that it's very, very easy to just not make a deal out of it.

I have told people I watched MLP which is far closer to "social suicide" than admitting to just watching anime, let alone an anime film that is massively popular, and it didn't fucking matter because I didn't act like an autist by trying to force it on them, I watched it was entertained, and that's that, who gives a fuck? If you don't, then the answer is no one.

I've been to a bunch of the places in Tokyo that are depicted in the film and it's the best animated representation of them I've seen yet. Really helps capture the mood of those areas.

Japan in general is a beautiful place but it depends what you want to see. Tokyo is a bit less green than is depicted in some of the movie's shots and there's obviously a bit more crowding and buildings in some areas (the wallpaper you posted doesn't actually look like that IRL because the buildings in the background are a bit more prominent). But get slightly out of the city or visit a less-developed place like Kyoto and you'll find tons of greenery.
>>
when's meetup floridanons?
>>
>>155861540
Flights $1400 - $1800
Hotels $75 - $120 / night
Food $50 - $90 / day
Transport $20 / day minimum

So as a total ballpark about $4500 for a two week trip for both me and my wife. Going solo will save you half on flights, but only maybe 30% on everything else. You could get a cheaper hotel for sure if you're not picky (the missus is hence the price tag).

The last line is the most variable, depending how far you go by what kind of transport (train, shinkansen, domestic flights, ferries, rental cars, bikes...).

And you'll want to have at least about $1000 for pure splurging on shit like CDs, movies, clothes, figures, or whatever your buyfag pleasure is. I'd recommend premium insurance too, it's all good when it's good, but if shit hits the fan then you can be very screwed without enough money and outside help, especially in the boonies.

And lastly, after visiting Tokyo once and twice, you realize just how fucking much better the boonies and the provinces and outdoors are.

Hope this helps.

I think Funimation deserves a bit more credit than that. They're hardly perfect, but they have generally had a pretty decent sense for picking the right shows and getting the word out there.

Their DVDs sell like weed in a college dorm compared to Jewniplex (despite Jewni's lineup of triple-A headliner titles like SAO and KLK) and Sentai (despite Sentai buying up everything in sight).

Agreed. Play it casual, and don't make a big deal about it.

How people will treat it depends on their view of you in general.

You could say your hobby was something totally alpha-male and macho like rifle shooting but if you come off as cringey and autistic people will start getting a school shooter vibe.

Conversely, you could say you watch anime and so long as you play it normally and casually and don't sound like a basement-dweller shut-in they won't give it a second thought. Pop culture these days has made huge inroads into mainstream culture. How much worse is it to say you watch a few Japanese cartoons versus, say, Game of Thrones or the latest Marvel movie?

A major theme was gaining confidence and finding ones self. Everything from the two having far more confidence while body swapped, to mitsuhas impromptu tokyo trip, and takis fist clench scene on the top of the stairs, all fit this narrative. Confronting mitsuhas father was just a natural extension of this.
I suspect it was cut out largely because it wouldnt fit well in the already lengthy montage.

JR Pass is great for the first trip to cover the typical Tokyo-Kyoto-Nara-Hiroshima itinerary, but on the next trip you realise that it leaves you no time to really stay in one place a little longer and take it in, or maybe take a trailer coastal JR train, get off at a random station and see what you can find there. The time limit is to tight to do much more than just rush through the landmarks and tick off must see places from a travel guide list.

I've found one of the best uses is for quick day trips, as it enables you to take the Shinkansen up to a more remote spot and still make it back to your "home" city at night. You could theoretically use it to stay in a cheaper city like Nagoya and visit more expensive cities like Tokyo without paying Tokyo hotel rates.
>>
>>155863188
I didn't take that route, so I guess "all around the country" was a lie, but I mostly said it because it was possible to go from one end to the other free of cost. I went Tokyo-Nagoya-Kyoto-Osaka, which might be odd. Personally, I avoided the landmark checklist mostly by spending a lot of time with my friend in Nagoya doing stuff that wasn't touristy since he's a native there. I would still recommend the JR pass for the first trip, as you say.

Yeah it doesn't really convey anywhere near the full meaning, but magic hour is probably the closest they could get in a dub.
>>
>>155862620

This raises a question IMO though: did Tessie and Sayaka, and Tsukasa and Takagi, know anything about what was going on?

It obviously seems like they didn't because no one ever makes any reference to it and Tsukasa clearly has no idea what's going on when he accompanies Taki to Hida, but the messages seem like they get used to "it" pretty quickly.

They got used to random daily personality changes without inquiring further?

And thanks a lot anon for doing this. Gives a lot more insight into what was going on and how Taki and Mitsuha were handling things.
>>
>>155863427
No matter what they would have lost the dual meaning unless some other culture had some superstition of twilight meetings or something.
>>
>>155863488
my personal opinion is that after the first couple days they were able to switch into each other's personalities much more easily, probably due to them being literal soulmates.
>>
>>155863498
Twilight is a pretty mystical period in just about any culture, though. There's always been superstition around sunset and the transition from day to night.
>>
>>155863488
I think the cooperation between Taki and Mitsuha was all about trying to blend into their normal life. Their friends had no reason to even think such a thing as body swapping was possible. The only ones who figured it out was the grandma, who had her own experience with it, and Mitsuha's father who maybe was involved in the mother's experience.

I've done the opposite several times, although omitting Nagoya so far (so Osaka-Kyoto-Tokyo) mostly because I usually prefer to end in Tokyo in time for Comiket in the summer.

I've found the rail pass generally isn't worth it for a single major Shinkansen trip (which is basically just the Kyoto-Tokyo leg) because commuter rail fares are so cheap it's very hard to get much value out of the pass aside from that one Shinkansen leg, especially since it prevents you from using the Nozomi Shinkansen service.

Just take off for two weeks or more. You don't need to quit.
>>155862374
GF and I just came back a few weeks ago and we spent 2400 for 12 nights altogether. Flights were redemptions with miles so "free." 220k miles because first class on jal and around $240 in fees which I included in the total. We did airbnb, jr pass, did a $300 ryokan, went to 7 different cities.
You don't need to spend a fortune. We didn't eat like poor people either.

Well that's good to know. Good for them.

I should clarify I don't think Funimation is a bad company overall. On the contrary. And hey, they certainly wouldn't have fucked marketing up fro the movie as bad as Sentai.
