The MC of Garden of Words had maturity for his age, but that's different from being an adult, or being mature enough to approach a relationship with an adult as an equal. Well, Shinkai himself said that the film is a meditation on post-quake culture. Before 2011, he thinks that Japan was in decline, and his movies were about dealing with loss and moving on despite that fact. But after the Tohoku earthquake, having seen the destruction, he figured that no, Japs shouldn't go quietly into the night, and instead fight to remain relevant and be proactive in life. Kimi no Na Wa is about whatever it takes to chase your ambition, to not let the world walk over you sitting down. Something I noticed on the second viewing: Taki's plan to save the town hinged on him knowing the blast radius of the comet. If he hadn't spent hours and hours pouring over every bit of information he could find on the incident, he wouldn't have known that the high school was a safe zone.

I like that, because it shows that it takes more than just guts to change things. Knowledge and preparation are important, too.

They're not terrible. Points for Noda being able to do the English version too. Can't think of many other Japanese singers that can do English that well. It helps keep the feel of the movie to have the same voice doing the theme music.

There are parts though where the English lyrics get a bit awkward. Some parts fit really well though; the first half of the second verse of Dream Lantern fit really well rhythmically and match the meaning of the Japanese version well. But in other parts it's clear Noda has to clip syllables and particles to make things fit.

IMO, it still works better than some other songs with English like Hiroyuki Sawano's BRE@TH//LESS.

Kind of sad that they're barely giving this movie two weeks of theater time in the US and essentially zero advertising. It bet it could've been a smash hit if anyone knew about it or at least if they had given it more time for word of mouth to spread. Holy shit, it rustled me so hard that in the sub everyone only ever had their first name used, despite being called at least 3 different ways in the actual dialogue.
