Kira is literally just obeying his nature. That's his whole schtick - a kid who grew into some weird fixations and overaffectionate parents that enabled his pursuit of them.

I fucking hate this chart so much. Having complex motives doesn't make you a good character. All it means is that you're a complex character, which doesn't necessarily mean you're a good character. Pic related is one of the most memorable villains in fiction and his only motivation was that he's such a goddamn dick. It's a simple, shallow concept that was executed to absolute perfection.

A villain should make you like them and hate them at the same time. If you only hate them, you just won't care about them. If you only like them, you won't want to see them get defeated.

A good villain matches the setting he's placed in, and acts as a good foil for the heroes.

You can write a good villain in absolutely any style you want. He just needs to fit the show and the point you're trying to make with the show. The viewpoint of your chart that it's shit unless the story is ambiguous and complicated is pretentious as fuck.

The most difficult thing to do well with villains is make them legitimately threatening, which is one of the few things you need in 100% of shows except comedies, I think.
Horror movies/shows have a big advantage here, because it's actually acceptable for the antagonist to win, but in most shows it's almost a given that the hero will save the day and in more lighthearted shows it's given that nothing really horrible (e.g. murder a main character) will happen either. If the author can make you feel like the villain has a chance of either winning or causing serious harm in the process, he's done a good job.
