>>
wish I did tbqh, but my theater was low energy.
>>
Hmm, thinking about it I care way more about Mitsuha than Taki. Mitsuha was just so more cuter and memorable.
>>
>>155816036
I went to the oscar prerequisite screening or whatever, it felt appropriate so the entire theater did it.
>>
>>155816036
Mitsuha in Taki was adorable. Something about her qt anime girl demeanor in a boy's body.
>>
>>155816567
shame we only really got like one sequence of her like that

I clapped like a madman for both my viewings. I've noticed that the asians in the audience are more keen to clap than the others.
>>
I went twice and the first audience did not clap. The second audience however, did. The major difference between the first and the second were that there were tumblr-tier hambeasts making obscene sounds and distasteful remarks every time something unexpected or interesting happened. I fucking hate Americlaps.
>>
Who was the guy with the glasses in that last montage before Nandemonaiya? I thought it was Tsukasa but it isn't. Everyone else I recognize.

The only movie I've ever clapped for was Shin Godzilla.

Just came back from the theater seeing this. Shitty website advertised it as Jap with subs, but they played the bloody dub. Complained the the manager after like proper autists (didnt ask for money back or anything, just didnt want it to happen again in the future).

Was a fantastic film though.

Absolutely NO Mitsuha lewds in this thread
>>
All right, guys. I'm gonna make my shitty closet cosplay into something actually recognizable by the next time I go to see this, since it got extended a week at my local theater. I'll make sure to bring red string too.
>>

DON'T LEWD THE MITSUHA
>>
>>155817284
I checked the montage, and it indeed isn't him. Has a different hairstyle. Presumably its one of Mitsuha's classmates, but I don't recall ever seeing him. It'd be weird anyway for a minor character to have a shot to himself. I don't get it.
>>
>>155817289
It's okay because it was her husbando
>>
>>155817288
Nah, Windsor. Can't believe it happened in two places, the audience started muttering once everyone heard the English voices.
>>
What would have happened if Taki accidentally or purposely drank Yotsuha's sake?
>>
>>155816567
The seiyuus for both characters were great too. Both managed to convey different personalities well.

Hold up, if Tsukasa and Okudera are engaged, why was she visiting from out of town to visit Taki? Shouldn't she be living in Tokyo with Tsukasa?

My parents were engaged for years when one was in New York and one in Michigan. Not gonna go too far into blogshit, but it's possible that Okudera found a career that's not in Tokyo that she's working at while Tsukasa's nearing the endgame of the job hunt, and that she'll quit once he gets financially stable enough to support them both.
>>

I saw it last weekend at Movieland.

>>
>>155817185

Not that I minded though, the dub was decent and this is probably the first and last time I'll see an anime in a cinema.

There were a number of times I thought it would end. The first was when that magic hour thing ended and Taki was losing his memory again. The second was when the comet hit. The third when they crossed paths on the bridge and kept walking. And the fourth at the very start of the actual end when the screen went black when we saw Yotsuha grown up.

Knowing Shinkai's history with bitter endings, I was so fucking scared this would have been the same.
>mfw the actual end happened

>>
>>155816418
Mitsuha in Taki's body was godtier.

Taki was pretty great as Mitsuha, but Taki as Taki was pretty boring. He didn't seem to have the same energy as when he was Mitsuha. Plus his hairstyle is ugly.

He recalls the Hiba mountains from his convenient date at the museum. Weird how the exhibit was literally called "Nostalgia" and he couldn't figure out that the village displayed is from 3 years ago. To be honest, I thought it was a gallery showing from an artist who missed living in the town, or that they were 20+ year old photos.

I'm not sure why he didn't recall the town, though. A lot of the other memory/lack of attention discrepancies can be chalked up to the haziness of remembering a dream, but that was a weird moment.

Watched it in theaters with the eng dub and thought it was decent enough. Thought Mitsuha sounded like a 50 y/o woman. Turns out I was right when I found out some 40 y/o cunt was doing her voice.

Shinkai encapsulated that emptiness that I've felt for the past 7 years in that montage at the end.

That frantic almost desperate desire to search for something.... Or someone.

Add that the romance is so beautiful and sweet that I couldn't help but cry. Cry because I've never felt that feel before....

I went to see this for the second time at Yonge & Dundas and it had to be the worst audience for a anime movie I've ever seen. Clapping at the start of the movie, howling laughter at almost every scene that had any humor, people going "aww" aloud when Mitsuha opens her palm, people clapping at the end of the movie.

The first time I saw this at the TIFF, the entire audience was completely silent until the end. Learn some self-restraint, you manchildren.

I denied myself the silly HS romance, spending time with my best friends, telling a girl I loved her

All because I was afraid and couldn't be bothered to take the risks.

Now I'm almost 25 and feel so behind emotionally and maturity wise in comparison to my friends who I hardly see because they're married and starting their own families.

When Mitsuha and Taki monologued about their emptiness, I cried because I know that feel all too well and wanted their resolution in my life

Laughing during funny scenes is all fine and dandy and can possibly make the experience that much better, but jesus christ people.

In the showing I went to, a couple people actually chuckled when the marker dropped on the ground. Seriously. The movie is very humorous at certain parts, but how in the world did anybody find this scene funny?

Next to the meteor impact, it was probably the most shocking and scary moment of the film. But people laughed.

I was worried that Taki as Mitsuha would be unable to convince anybody that the town would be destroyed, and would then at least try to get Mitsuha to safety. Then they would switch back and she would return to the town, unwilling to give up on her family and friends and end up dying again, trying to save them to the bitter end.

Is the dub really that bad? I'd honestly prefer watching the dub if it was high quality.

I think I've watched Disappearance of Haruhi more times dubbed than subbed, Kyon's voice is great.

Saw it for the 2nd time earlier today. Only had 4 other people in the theater and it made for a much better experience. Everyone laughed at the funny parts and rest of the movie was pure silence. Once this comes out on Blu-ray I'm going to watch it again. Haven't had this personal of a connection to any media in quite some time. Listening to the OST has been giving me chills almost every song.

There were a few things that I didn't like in the movie. The boob fondling joke was overused but it was redeemed with the scene where Taki sees the sister is still alive. I feel the time used for a literal anime opening was wasted since it messed up the pacing of the beginning and the body switch shenanigans felt rushed. That first scene especially when it shows Taki reacting to being in Mitsuhas body then it cuts to her being back to normal, it took me a minute to figure out what was happening.

But it's weird, I felt kind of disappointed right when I finished it since the movie got hyped for so long and I knew all of the spoilers but a few days after I couldn't stop thinking about it and now I bought another ticket to go again so I can pay more attention to the visual cues.

Or rather, a big part of it is just how well the characterization is done in this movie. Like, Shinkai moved away from his usual atmospheric style, and took a lot more notes from someone like Hosoda, it feels. The animation looks much more net-kei and simplistic, which in turn allows for more body language.

There's a lot to appreciate on a technical level. The parallels between the sliding wooden doors and sliding train shots. The trippy sake scene. The spectacular editing for the ending and montage scenes. But if anything, I'd say watch it again. There's a crazy amount of foreshadowing you don't think about the first time.

The idea that seeing too many movies leaves you emotionally invulnerable is silly, though. It might heighten your resistance a little, but good films will always make you feel things. That's the point.

This is by far Shinkai's most successful film, but don't expect a Kimi no na wa 2: Na Wa harder. Shinkai doesn't really do sequels, and Kimi no Na Wa was a deeply personal project for him.

However, we might see a collaboration between the production staff again, which would be great. Shinkai needs experienced AD's to hold him back, to keep him from just drawing wallpapers.

The characters generally moved a lot more organically than a Shinkai movie usually does. Ando was a godsend.

Shinkai is a great director, but he really needs to be held back on some aspects.

>>155824650
>>155824677
To be fair, that whole scene was basically a direct reference to the Earthquake. The destruction, the way shit was just abandoned, and even the way things were fenced off. If you think about it, there's no real reason a meteor would create that kind of destruction, it'd just vaporize everything and shit, not toss earth up and twist train tracks.

Hell, even the ending has Taki becoming an architect talking about how "it could happen in Tokyo." How are architects supposed to defend against meteors?

>>155824691
Eh, Shinkai will have bigger budgets, and his shit has always been hit or miss really. I think the whole reason Kimi no na wa was successful was that he started pushing new themes after the Quake, as in rather than accept shit happening and learning to live with loss, like 5cm, going out of your way and trying to save what's important to you, and the fact that he had a talented team working with him that could really add some flair to his animation. Also, the moe moe designs. Let's be honest, the characters in 5cm or Garden of Words or whatever weren't nearly as qt as Mitsuha. Thank god for whatshisface that designed Toradora.

>>155824777
>>155824772

Realistically, because it was designed as a disaster shelter. In a lot of rural and small towns public schools are the designated shelters due to their size and the fact that gyms have a shitton of seating and open space.

Not that it's much of an excuse but Taki can call her dad whatever the fuck he wants after the way he's treated them.

>Mitsuha loving to play cupid for every match she sees (her friends, Taki x sempai, etc...)
>turns out that what she truly wanted to match was her and Taki

And in a stretch of things, I guess you can consider the comet their cupid.

So are all of Shinkai's MC's artists? The only other movie I've seen so far is Garden of Words and both MC's did a lot of sketching.

I thought that might actually happen. One of those "you can't change fate" situations.

Everytime I rewatch the movie I notice something different that makes me appreciate how it was directed.

I just noticed that during the montage Mitsuha (Taki) does a ponytail because it's a much simpler hairstyle, whereas Mitsuha (Mitsuha) does her hair braided-style.

No, programmer, engineer, pilot etc. were all featured.

I love Mitsuha (Taki).

She (male) is pretty great.

Pretty sure he became jobless.
>>
>>155825426
Yeah that's actually the main way to distinguish them; Taki always has a ponytail when he's Mitsuha.
>>
>>155825426
I thought that was pretty obvious. It's also more boyish.

Mitsuha noises are a gift to the world.

gotta see everything her seiyuu does from now on

yes I know that'll mostly be live action shit but still

also was surprised to find out taki's seiyuu also did the mc in summer wars, the kid in howl's moving castle, and a bunch of live action manga films

It's an important point because it means Taki never sees Mitsuha's special hair cord that she usually ties her hair with, so he never makes the connection until Onedera points it out to him. Same with Mitsuha never wearing Taki's version of the cord as a bracelet when she's in control.

There's a number of little things that helps the still somewhat ludicrous set of circumstances get set up.

His room was scattered with programming texts, and at one point you look at code for dealing with SQL reflecting off his eyes.

so where was it said taki studied architecture? don't remember that

That most recent time I went to see it in a cinema, there was indeed one guy who clapped. Then a couple others and me picked up after he stopped.

Maybe I'll make one after I get back from watching it for the fourth time tomorrow.
>>
>>155825835
It's probably stated out right in an interview/art book somewhere, but it's pretty apparent in the movie. He does pretty impressive building drawings in both Mitsuha's art class and his own time, and there's an architecture banner in his room. Then there's what he's interested in in the back of his room.

The movie has a number of things hidden in the background. It's been confirmed in an interview that Tsukasa and Okudera were engaged, but you can watch the progression of it in the background of them fucking around on Taki's love quest and then them both having rings in their epilogue shots.
>>
Still thinking if I should rewatch it, or just ride out the wave of emotions and come back when the BD is out.
>>
>>155825929
>in in the back of his room
Wow, I need to fucking sleep. What he's interested in in his job interviews, I mean.
>>
>>155825920
I'll make it if no one else will atm.

>>155825929
>It's been confirmed in an interview that Tsukasa and Okudera were engaged
I heard the opposite, that an interview said they weren't engaged.
