Very few manga/anime have an actual system in place. A system would imply a set of rules that everybody has to follow, but more systems in anime are either a) just train to increase your power and get powerups based on rage/love/friendship/whatever (which would be a system, but pretty simple, not to mention the rules are broken with no regards) or b. everybody has a different, unique power with unique rules (in a system with magic controlled purely by rules, you should be able to learn to use any spell/technique by following the rules, manga/anime is generally closer to superpowers, where everybody has its own power with its own rules).

That being said, I think that HxH would have a good system if the author could think of cool things that aren't Conjuration or Specials. JoJo has a set of rules that it's sometimes respected and sometimes not, while every stand has an unique power, the author at least tends to respect the rule of power being inversely proportional to range, and the rule of harming the stand = harming the user, for example.

Nen is a smart way to get creative with the powers and create a system that rewards sacrifice and thinking outside the box. It's doing what most shonen do, but defined properly, and with limitations that seem plausible to whoever actually pays attention.

To make it better bigger It's not always better, just whoever uses his abilities best, or whichever skill is the most versatile within the situation.


I feel this was experimented on the Yu-yu arc that introduced the people with abilities before taking full shape on HxH.

the last chapter of one piece i read was about when luffy used his first haki move, just because i stopped reading manga in general. now every so often i check in and the word haki comes up in every chapter. i loved the concept, but like HxH says, power levels shouldnt matter (much, when close) in a fight

the chimera ant was a beast from the new world, who had human DNA. he was a very unique mix of raw wild strength and the ability to manipulate Nen, with a conscious mind. not only is it not power level bullshit, it fits seemlessly into the strategy type combat that hxh is supposed to entail. only the future can really say how the story unfolds

Bounties were an interesting take on the concept of powerlevels, and for most characters they were effectively a measure of how strong/dangerous they are. And haki kinda ruined everything.

Raildex has the best depiction of supernatural/superhuman powers, with honorable mention going to Medaka Box because it's powers are more conceptual based and there isn't any standard system due to the nature of the series. Medaka Box powers are more about the characters personalities and less about being an organized power system.
