And Monogatari isn't really meta about being an anime, it's meta about being a story. The key concepts it plays around with the most are the ideas of the hero, the heroine, the villain, and the linear narrative. It has some "haha we're doing an anime trope but different and WaCkY" sprinkled on top, but really the things its actual story and characters are subverting is the idea of what a story itself should be.
