I watched the anime first then checked out a few chapters during and after it aired. Have you ever had to pause a video because of second-hand embarrassment? That's the watamote anime for about 70% of the scenes. It's physically difficult to watch. A few scenes in the manga had me stop reading and walk around for a bit but it doesn't even come close to the levels of the anime.

Iruru may be a personification of Cool's non-normie friendly fetishes spilling out of his H works, but she still had far more interesting storyline than any of the filler shit KyoAni came up with, including the retarded season finale.

The show had no focus. It couldn't pick one thing and stick with it. Plus the writing just felt bad in general. Girls were cute but that's about it and probably the only reason people kept watching. Although judging from pixiv it was mostly lolicons that kept trying to stomach the show for Kanna. It's pretty bad when your two main characters get overshadowed by a third wheel. Kobayashi and Tohru really were just fucking awful characters. Anything was better than them.

Most of this is right. Kobayashi's character was too Ben Stein-esque. It was dull and her quirks were just repeating jokes like not wanting to eat Tohru's tail, or being a maid otaku. Tohru's interactions were only interesting when they were with anyone other than Kobayashi. They missed opportunities for Tohru to learn some lessons. Like just turning the Little Match girl into a magical girl joke rather than Tohru thinking that Kobayashi will one day die.
