Of course. I'm not saying that entertaining male MCs are non existent in anime. You can't deny that there isn't a trend to make male leads in harems as bland as possible. And there is no good reason for it either other than the fear of blocking self insertion and thus losing those greasy NEET bucks.

To be fair though, a huge bulk of anime these days are adaptations and those authors make the MCs bland as hell so it's not always in the hands of the studios.

I watch harem anime because it, by proxy, allows me to live through what I have missed out on. It's not so much about lewdness or pretty girls (though it does help), but such things as having a tightly knit group of friends, going to the beach, going to the mountains, going to the pool and just enjoying the springtime of youth. Onsen/beach/festival episodes are established clichés some people are sick of, but I really enjoy them.

My problem with harems is when the MC has zero male friends, no father figure, and no male role model at all, so he ends up being completely beta and never makes a move on any girl ever. The point of those shows I mentioned is not the harem, it's the relationship between the two people who are guaranteed to end up together and their overall development. The focus is really hard on those two. You average harem will put a somewhat equal amount of focus on the entire cast, all of which are usually part of some shitty arctypes and just straight up boring.
