Comparing a shop that likely makes the ice cream locally to store bought isn't a fair comparison. Ice cream requires a fairly delicate balance of ingredients to make it creamy rather than icy. Any brand that will be selling in a super market will be required to use ingredients that are only there to act as stabilizers. The only thing that I've found that matches the quality of the Haagen das at a lower cost is my grocery store's in store brand of premium ice cream. The ingredients for a batch of home made ice cream could potentially even be more depending on your flavor. I will also add that gelato is amazing and I really wish it were easier to find in the US. Grocery store "gelato" isn't the same.

Traditionally Haagen Dasz is known for using a very high quality and expensive vanilla extract. However, there was a time period when corporate cost-cutting lead them to cheap out and start substituting lower-cost vanilla flavoring.

Last I heard they had returned to their original, due to declining sales and consumer non-acceptance of the cheaper substitute, although who knows if we're getting Actual Original Coke or New sort-of Original Coke.

It's one of the better readily available brands around. Obviously nothing beats those fancy ice cream parlors or your local hole in the wall shop, but when you're craving ice cream, this is a good choice.
