Mary Sue, in general they are just a symptom of horrible writing.

The Jp ones while at first are not as insufferable as the usual, they do suffer from other cancerous cliches that makes them equally awful.

One I find particularly intolerable is that they usually behave in an outrageous/reckless way and yet the universe makes sure they are always 100% correct at everything and of course, there is no real reason behind their awesomeness or it's weak as it gets. Hell, the cliche is so fucking tiring that a lot of story arcs revolve around proving them right after they did something objectively stupid/unnecessary. But hey, what's a Mary Sue if the story doesn't waste time making them look cool?

While this may make the stories somewhat predictable, it's better than shitty infodumps that frequently feel out of place/forced... and way, way better than horrible "out of nowhere" developments. (Usually just there to spice a shitty story or edginess)
