Come on, something was very clearly off about the world they were in. I don't know why that's so hard to miss. It's just that after the series' ending most people wouldn't think to assume it was a witch's barrier. The whole scenario was just Homura distracting everyone by having an ideal magical girl scenario with the nightmares and everything. Sayaka is very clearly enjoying herself in all of it. The beginning of the movie is basically all fluff for fans.

As Homura begins to suspect something is off, the illusion very quickly starts breaking down and the biggest suspects are Madoka, Sayaka or Homura. It's revealed that Homura became a witch like the end of the series literally showed. They defeat Homura and as Madoka goes to take Homura up into magical girl Valhalla, a logical conclusion is made that AI YO is more powerful than both hope and despair.

Homura's selfish love for Madoka vs Madoka's own selfless love for all becomes a very big and obvious contrast. Taking the above contrast home: Homura, being a perfectly flawed human, doesn't think that it's fair that she gets an unsatisfying ending after all that she went through decides to usurp Madoka and recreate the world in a way that she thinks is satisfactory, ironically giving most viewers the happy ending they wanted, even though it's fake.

It's a great movie, but it definitely ain't that deep.

It's more that the story set up for a twist that was so emotionally ambivalent people aren't sure what to feel.
It's an ending that was neither happy nor sad. The good guys both won and lost. Every person feels a little different about it, and it takes people a little while to fully understand how they felt about it and why because the actual feelings are confusing.

The plot content of the ending was clear and obvious, but how the audience is supposed to take it isn't quite so clear. I think that's part of what makes it an interesting outcome.

And that's one of my favorite things about it. We got the happy ending we wanted at least I did but at the same time, it's imperfect. It's fake and transient with Madoka still having a chance to awaken. Homura herself knows this. It's fantastic.

I loved the fact that we had the setup scene prior with Madoka basically asking Homura for help (or at least seeming that way through Homura's perspective) and being uncertain whether or not it's actually authentic or a product of Homura's by then warped perception.
So in the end when she makes good on that and 'saves' Madoka, it's even more ambiguous. Was she actually acting for Madoka's self-interest and giving her back the life she really wanted, or was it just a selfish act justified by delusion? If it's the latter, is it still justifiable? If it's the former, is it worth the consequences?

It's great, I love thinking about it.

They could have did a number of things to fix their problems like: Wish for the Incubators to have human emotions to reflect on what they did, wish away the entropy that would have eventually doomed earth, flat out had Sayaka wish away the Walpurgis night, and so on.

Anyway I actually enjoyed Rebellion, it added more depth to Homu's character and I enjoyed seeing Devil Homura shenanigans, the Mami fight, etc. Whenever the next movie comes out I have no clue how it'll tie up the series, but for what it's worth I hope there's some form of happy ending. I highly doubt Goddess Madoka would do anything intense like try to kill Homu either but eh.

Towards Madoka's sacrifice Homura's expressed attitude in the space hug scene was made VERY much clear. She did not like it at all, the same way she was pretty desperate when Madoka parted from her and they wouldn't continue the exchange they had going there. I having made the world a better place does not change the fact that Homura never at any point agreed or was shown to agree with Madoka sacrificing her individuality, making it so that the act of calling her attitude in the series as being ambivalent about it (Madoka's sacrifice) is simply not possible.

And yeah, there being more interesting, as you put it, ways to end the franchise than this; it pretty much leaves it crystal clear that such an ending wouldn't really be a satisfactory ending of the situation originated in Rebellion - to what varying degrees of acceptable it would be, it now becomes a matter of opinion.

What Madoka said in the flower field is valid in any and all contexts. In absolutely none of them would she want an ending where she was taken away from her family and friends. Such an ending would pain her. That's it.
