Everything about this show is so absurdly good. Direction is top-notch, Kyoto is a god-tier setting, patrician soundtrack makes you dance and cry but never leaves you indifferent, Kumeta designs are all fun as fuck, voice acting blew the fuck outta other shows of the season and still is 10/10, the story is unassuming but leaves a lot of space for forming your own thoughts on everything you see on the screen, girls a best, boys a best, FUCK ME S2 just has to be as good as S1 and it will already be the best show this season

I agree with the grandma bit. It's probably the result of not really fitting in with the normal people or the supernatural. You're just kind of in the middle and you get warped by it. Benten does a "human" thing by eating tanuki hotpot but she knows about them by being a "tengu". This illustrates the conflict that is going on in her head.

I can't wait to see the mother's backstory

I want to see them actually utilize the shapeshifting aspect of the show more frequently. It only ever really seemed to be played for gags or for very specific moments near the beginning and end, I feel like there was an entire stretch in the middle of the show where there was little to nothing transformation-wise besides their regular disguises.

The only thing I hoped for in advance was milktub back for the OP, now that that's confirmed I'm just looking forward to the ride

Yeah, I would throw that under the "little" in "little to no." It was one scene that we were informed on well ahead of time, and while it was entertaining it wasn't what I would consider excessively interesting or anything.

I think the first few and last few episodes spoiled me where the MC spent more time transformed as other things than he did in his normal disguise. I was sort of expecting it to keep that kind of pace but instead it turns from a frequent and interesting part of the story to one that's just brought out when it's needed or necessary. There are three societies in Kyoto; Tengu, Tanuki and human. Yasaburo is an easygoing tanuki that just wants to have fun in life. He and his brothers miss their dad who was made into a hotpot by a human group called the Friday Fellows. Yasaburo's first love, Benten, is part of the group as well. She was formally a human that became a tengu under Akadama-sensei. Yasaburo also learned under him. The show is basically about tanuki life, the bonds of family, and there's also the mystery of what exactly happened to their dad. Yasaburo and the other tanuki also have to be careful not to become a hotpot as well.
