This is my main issue with most of Kyoani stuff and anime in general, but it's more noticeable with KyoAni since they tend to stick to character driven SoLs that don't really need this kind of finales. Producers believe they need some kind of 'epic' and emotional last two episodes to raise the stakes and end in a supposed high note. Shit doesn't work because most of the time there's no buildup whatsoever and the shitty subplot is rushed as hell. The only time I remember working in a KyoAni show was with Hibike S1 since most of what went on in episode 12 and 13 had proper, constant buildup from the very beginning.

I feel like none of the main themes through the series pointed at this kind of resolution. Living the moment, home is where loved ones are, etc, I got this from watching the show, but Tooru's dad wants to take her back because muh rules, something that as far as I remember, was never alluded previous to the final episode. The fantastical elements and Tooru's world was on the background pretty much the whole time, but its rules and politics became a central thing in the final episode, I thought it was kind of sloppy and detached from the point of the series.

If I wouldn't had read this thread I would have never found out people didn’t liked the ending. I just caught up but as soon as I saw the final chapter would have her father present I knew it would had been dramatic, especially given the tone the show had and the way Kyoani finish their seasons.

Around the middle some episodes felt uneventful, i personally wanted more world building but I know the series is not about that. I hope kyoani follows its rules, makes a second season and buries it forever.

Explain how it's underdeveloped at all. Actually point out a lapse in the in universe logic, or any sort of internal contradiction.

Kobayashi's instant "non reaction" reaction at hearing Tohru has suddenly departed was as realistic as it gets in conveying her gradual shock and realization that Tohru may have left her forever. I know I would react like that, without any of the over-the-top melodramatic hysterics as the suddenness of the shocking news is just too unbelievable for the brain to register as real at first.
But still, when Tohru returned, Kobayashi seized on the moment to make sure Tohru stays, even if it means confronting Tohru's Dad.
Tohru's Dad may be an All-Powerful Evil Dragon of Doom, but in the end, like any other girlfriend's dad, he's really just a Tsundere Dad. And Kobayashi has raised the right flags in making him grudgingly concede in letting Tohru stay, at leastfor now.
After that epic battle, Kobayashi decided to repay the favour by having Tohru and Kanna visit her folks. Wedding the natural next step
A decent place to end a season for a manga that is still ongoing. Would not be surprised if season 2 ever gets made.

The ending episode didn't fit in with the rest because the rest is very laid back about pretty much every possible issue. Read the manga, chapter 20, if you want to see how the situation was handled when it was written by the original author. There is one actual antagonist showing up briefly later on in the manga, but even then it's not nearly as nauseatingly dramatic as what Kyoani shat out for the season finale. I'm grateful they adapted the series and all episodes that weren't the last or the 100% filler ones were enjoyable, but the series could've either be only 10 episodes or drop filler/anime originals in favour of getting Iruru's storyline into the adaptation.

And if you want to respond, don't even attempt to derail the argument by saying anything about "oppai loli" or "sexualizing little girls".

This anime had such promise, but most of the characters weren't really characters, they were just gimmicks.

Elma came in, and was really cool for all of five minutes, and then she was just given the gimmick of "DUDE SHE LIKES FOOD XD"

Lucoa came in, and her whole lewd schtick was fine for the first three or four times it happened, but pretty much every single scene that had her just focused on her tits. All she was was boobs, she never even went dragon form or contributed anything.

Shouta was literally just "S-STOP BEING LEWD GOSH" and Saikawa was just "OMG KANNA JUST DID SOMETHING WAAAA"

And the ending was rushed to shit, we coulda had a couple episodes of build up or some kind of foreshadowing, but instead all we got was a bunch of gimmicks playing off of each other.

I was surprised how conflicted I was with the final episode only to feel it redeemed by the few moments after Dadragon left. I'm still in the boat that argues how the final episode would have been better off as 1.5-2 episodes given how dry some of the later parts of the series were. However, the suddenness of Tooru's self-doubt conflict wouldn't have had quite the impact that it did if they maybe stretched it out. The rapid pacing of the last episode really does evoke emotions of desperation and confusion, so to that end, the pacing actually isn't that bad.

I guess if we count the OVA, the series will technically have a warm, fuzzy end anyway. I'm looking forward to it while I still plug away at a maidragon project despite the generally waning interest.

Lucoa is neutral so she probably has a comparable attitude, not sure about Fafnir though.

Still, let's also not forget that Tohru's dad is an emperor and pretty damned powerful. Most of them (except maybe ex-goddess Lucoa) are probably too afraid to get in his way.

Kanna does have quite a number of developmental interactions with Kobayashi, but the Saikawa moments were rather oversaturated with Saikawa reacting to physical contact. It got slightly better toward the very series' end.
Tohru is basically on Fafnir's level, except her relationship with Kobayashi--and by extension, other humans--is stretched out across the events of the entire series. Tohru's connection to the other world is also a catalyst for plot development and character interaction.

The anime really amped up Kobayashi's gay. They basically had her confirm romantic feelings. If they ever do a S2 it'd be a huge mess.

S2 would be a little touchy. If Kyoani left it at just Kobayashi laying underneath Tooru in that field after Demise left, the relationship between them would probably be alright despite how really amped and dramatic everything had gotten throughout the course of that episode. Although, it might also be very possible that an S2 could just deal with a hard-reset going forward. It's not like they really dwelled on the fact that the anime ended with Kobayashi taking Tooru to her parents; it was just a cute, warm way to end the show: Tooru became family.

I still don't think a full S2 would be an excellent idea, anyway. Maybe a few episodes' worth of an OVA or something, but as it stands, there's not enough material to really establish a season. The manga content was pretty jumbled anyway.

The ending was rushed and came completely out of left field.
Episode 12 gave us more information about Tohru that helped us understand her in a deeper sense, but still left more to be asked. "What happened to the girl after they met? Why is she working in a mansion now? Is that in the other world? Why do we care about this inferior human?" Then with the ending and the sky opening up to show the Emperor of Demise...you almost expect this to be the beginning of some story arc (even though there's been little story arcing to have even happened in the first place) You finally feel like the show is going somewhere other than just nice little funny slice of life, like it's got potential to have some really compelling storytelling beyond "doki doki kawaii" moments.

Crushing all of that content into one episode, was both cruel and unjust. We got a sick look into like without Tohru, and it would have been much more interesting to have played on that for a while...even if it is painful. We needed to know more about Tohru's father. Why is he so intent on having her come back? How did he know she wasn't dead? Why does he care? Why doesn't he care about Kanna, Lucoa, Fafnir, or Elma? If Elma cared so much, and she's in the harmony faction, then why would the king of what would presumably be the chaos faction even give a shit???

So much could have been expanded on with more episodes, and it would have been interesting. Instead what we got was an extremely rushed and nonsensical end that tried to make our hearts warm, but instead made our eyes blaze.

I'm currently reading the manga, and I can only assume that it's going to be much the same issue there only even more brief.

I enjoyed the characters a whole lot, but I really think this anime would have benefited from a season 2 rather than ending it like that.
