Could Kimi no Na wa be the most overrated anime of the past decade?

>>

Movie was fantastic, beautiful. I hated on it for a while and did a complete 180 when I actually saw it. However it is not the greatest anime movie ever and whoever says that is just hurting the film by overhyping it.

We go through this literally every time a movie breaks box office records.

Yes it's overrated. No it's not "bad", but it's very generic and appeals to the lowest common denominator.

>anime becomes popular
>suddenly gets a lot of people shitting on it
Really makes you think. The movie was around for 10 months and basically nobody shitposted about it, but now that it's out in America and mainstream? Yeah, now the """real critics""" can begin their work. What's the sin of this movie? Being popular. Because everyone's a fucking hipster. Personally my favorite anime only sold 6 Blurays (I bought 4 of them), and that's what makes it a 10/10.

But ki no na wa? People saw this movie?!? Into the trash it goes, god, what a fucking pile of shit. Forced animation all over the place, a plot that makes zero goddamn sense because... Not htat I actually watched because I don't watch mainstream trash like this for I am a true intillectual, a man of real high taste. Have you seen Tatami galaxy? now that's a good anime. Like god damn it's good, this trash just doesn't compare. Y'all don't know shit about good kino anime. Kimi no Na wa wasn't evne the best anime movie to come out that year. No wonder it lost some obscure anime award and even the oscars. Although the oscars are hsit too because they don't know anything about anime at all, the mainstream fucks, even after they tried to shill to the voters.

Anyway where was I... Oh yeah, Kimi no na wa is bad. I'll be honest, I saw the chinese rip and it looked like shit so I gave it 4/10 on MAL. Forced animation all over the place and the humor and writing was shit. WOW i'm a GIRL that means i can grope BOOBS holy FUCK i'm aughing light now at how FUNNY and AMAZING this joke is.

and then the rest of the movie.... what is there? dude turns into a girl and what then? comet? WHOAHAH SO UNPREDICTABLE PLOT TWIST INCREDIBLE, who comes up with this crap? I expected nothing and even I thought it was bad.
the Music was just nothing . i'm deaf now. i can't hear. heolp me. i never wanted this. i don't rememeber the sound of anything.i twas thsi bad asnd i just wiushg i nebwer saw htish tamownie cit ruin

Planes are the emperically worst place to watch a movie. There is no peace with the sound of the engine droning, the warm, dry recycled air, and the fat sick porpoises snoring next to you. And that's not even mentioning the shittly screen and the fact that you can't turn off the lights to see it better.

I don't think anyone's made this claim.

It was a simple, yet beautiful film that told a moving story. Not everything has to be high art - the purpose of art is to provoke an emotional reaction and the film did.

I know we're not supposed to like things too much around here but I'll be dammed if this wasn't on of the best films I've ever seen, animated or no.

It has the absolute best use of 3DCG in 2D animation I've ever seen; every other time I've seen it, I've said "Oh, this is the budget part, they used CG to save money," but in this film used it in a way that actually felt like it was building on the 2D bits and didn't look jarring

They also hooked me hard with the drama, I was clutching the hem of my coat during the whole last 10 minutes or so.

I dunno about best ever, but it's a fucking masterpiece as far as I'm concerned.

Funimation unironically was telling movie theaters in the US they needed to book it for a full big house run of at least 2 weeks starting April 14th (the day Furious 8, which will be top 5 box office of the year, comes out). They wanted to counterprogram niche anime against a property comparable to a Marvel release.

Funimation is the stupidest fucking group of idiots ever.

They couldn't get any screens of it booked and had to totally renegotiate terms. Even still, art house theaters that could've actually pushed admits to it during the limited release and were asking to screen it (like mine) were turned down in favor of Cinemark and AMC theaters which won't do shit for it.

It's really remarkable. Every US anime cinema release is completely ruined by the import studios. Funimation is the same studio that repeatedly insists art house theaters screen dubs instead of subtitles -- it's totally insane. If an anime isn't licensed by GKids it has zero chance of bringing cash back to Japan.
>>
>>155610716

I'll be real with you, if the dub isn't awful I'd rather see it dubbed in the theater, though I prefer a choice like this one.

I don't pay to watch on a 4k Eleventy-billion-inch screen and a sound system that could vibrate my house to the ground so I can read yellow subtitles the whole time, I want to see the visual spectacle.

I went to see this for the second time at Yonge & Dundas and it had to be the worst audience for a anime movie I've ever seen. Clapping at the start of the movie, howling laughter at almost every scene that had any humor, people going "aww" aloud when Mitsuha opens her palm, people clapping at the end of the movie.

The first time I saw this at the TIFF, the entire audience was completely silent until the end. Learn some self-restraint, you manchildren.

Europe was making beer out of polluted river water that they shat in simply so that cities could have something approaching drinkable as they didn't by accident have a tea-brewing culture that boiled water all the time.

>even on the theaters website the movie is hidden on an obscure page most people wont even go to
>theater doesn't even tell what screenings are subbed or dubbed

I refuse to go with my mother to the movies, no matter how much she begs, for this very reason.

Non-familial incidents aside, I've only had it happen to me once, at a showing of Attack of the Clones some six weeks after it was released. The theater was mostly empty except for us and a pack of nerds up front with lightsabers that openly cheered when Yoda fought Count Dooku.

That was enough right then and there to convince me that an armed usher should be posted to every theater, ready to shoot people on sound.

I got drug to watching RWBY season 1 in a theater and holy shit it's made every other weeb crowd I've ever encountered seem like perfect gentlemen

Yelling memes, quoting every single line non-stop, singing along with all the songs terribly, and talking amongst themselves the entire time like they were just sitting on the couch next to their bud.

They smelled terrible as a collective and while I'm normally not the type to be embarrassed by my hobbies, I could not stand the shame of being associated with these people. I'm sure the people in the hall could hear them all, the way they were behaving.

Watching this movie just reminds me that anime is a terrible source of media to watch when you're a depressed adult. Watching such unusual events occur to normal people and having them earnestly living their lives to the fullest is a sad reminder that I've wasted all my youth.

Give me a fucking break, they remembered a bunch of inane shit, they would definitely remember noticing the date being being 2 years off.

Even if you discount how much time they spend looking at phones, the notion that the date would not come up at all while they were in school, having a conversation or simply going about their daily lives is utterly absurd.

School in particular is one place where the current date is bound to come up repeatedly.

Does it even matter? If you think about the time travel aspect too much you'll find some plot holes. That isn't the point the movie is trying to make. The film is about the emotional journey the characters go on, and everything the movie presents makes that a compelling journey.

>>
>>155616515
Yeah it matters, this isn't a "small" plot hole it's a gaping chasm that would've been noticed immediately by a vaguely competent writer.

Sure plot holes are common in time travel stories, but they are normally due to the complexity of messing around with cause and effect in multiple timelines, which is not the case here. There's no excuse for making such a basic error in the fundamental premise of the story.

>>
>>155616679
I love the film but I agree that this is a stupid plot hole. Everything else has some metaphorical or thematic meaning.

Self-erasing phones are unrealistic, but it makes sense if it's tied to Taki's own (fading) memory of Mitsuha. Time travel in general is dumb, but it's a good metaphor for long distance.

But the date thing? Shinkai should have looked a bit harder for an excuse for this one. I WANT an excuse, but the movie doesn't really offer one.

>Not seeing the date on a laptop (or not using a laptop, ever)

But this is China we're talking about, so if you know a party boss and you can guarantee enough tax revenue, you can make fart jokes and show cleavage all day long.

I was mad at this at first too but it becomes less outrageous when you realize that the dates that tell what year it is are scattered everywhere visually, and not even subtly, they're there in plain sight. But I didn't catch any of them, so I guess as part of its strength in visual storytelling, it somewhat helped the "plot hole".
>>
Anyone in Cary, NC? At the 2 pm showing?
>>
>>155618378
That's an incredibly backwards justification. The characters spent weeks worth of time in eachothers bodies, the movie was 2 hours long and the dates only displayed on screen for a few seconds in total. You failing to notice the date is not even comparable.

>>155614985
it depends on where in america you're talking about

>>
>>155618378
true, i do think it would have been a little better if they had any lingering familiarity with each other's world while "dreaming," so you could imagine they just kind of accepted the date as a normal thing. but they were pretty lucid and pretty confused so you have to kind of assume that they somehow just missed noticing the date completely.

the plot holes didn't break the movie for me, i'm just sad they had to be there because it could have been perfect

Movie was great, though I thought the subs could have used some changes here and there, plus they were really low resolution, definitely not intended to scale up that large.

But wondering, did the magic just erase Taki's friend and senpai's memories as well? Surely they would have remembered that they went to a mountain town to find this person, and that actually they had all died. Or did everything change when they swapped bodies back for the final time, and by the time he had woken up, the timeline had changed? Doesn't address the paradox of them having gone there in the first place, since they would have had no reason to if Mitsuha was still alive, but you can't really do time travel stories and iron out everything neatly, while still keeping it in one timeline.
>>
>>155624717

Timeline clearly changed, the events of the situation blatantly changed when Taki was remembering being obsessed with it. They remembered going to the mountain, but they couldn't really remember why.
>>

Japan doesn't stigmatize seniority. And gaijin animators are becoming more commonplace over there... although that's starting from a low benchmark.

So you're that kind of person that's socially retarded? I would get it if they're being obnoxious as fuck and yelling/making obnoxious sounds for no reason at all.

Watched this at the nearest Cineplex. The only cringe audience reaction I've seen was the guy on the farthest row in the back that burped loudly in the start of the movie.

Also surprised to see that ~80% of the audience in that auditorium was female weebs.

>>155578268
It's actually a pretty good movie and probably a contender for one of the best anime film ever made. No one is overrating it because it's genuinely a good movie. If you're thinking it's overrated, you're probably retarded.

I'm guessing that the timelines were 'fixed'; only Taki remembers the events while the others thinks that they went there in the mountains to sightsee or something like that.

What better way to get to know someone that literally stepping in their shoes? These two had a more intimate relationship than you could ever imagine
>>
>>155625405

The funniest thing that occurred to me after I got out of the theater was that Taki's infatuation with Cake indirectly telegraphed that there was a three-year time-gap between his and Mitsuha's bodyswap experiences.

>There was literally no reason for the two to fall in love with eachother.
Also what the heck are you talking about? They spent a significant amount of time enmeshed in one another's lives at an intimate level that isn't possible.
>>
>>155625637
A couple of weeks is not a significant amount of time

>>155625664

1. Yes it is, in a lot of cases. Romance works differently for different couples.

The really terrible thing is the cliche that the main characters in a romance dislike each other at first then come to like each other later. This is so overdone in romances that there are MULTIPLE films who's entire point is to deconstruct that cliche.

She's the teacher explaining the whole twilight thing at the beginning during the first scene where Mitsuha is in class, very early in the film. She also appears later on, I think when Mitsuha's friend gets caught with the radio in the school

It was a fun watch, but it isn't really interesting. Nurayihon is better, represents the japanese culture and the animation quality is better. It can be easy to claim it is the best anime ever considering the animes in recent years are complete garbage.

Compare Charlotte to Angel Beats (Made by the same studio) and you see a deterioration in quality.
>>

>>
>>155625567
Doesn't that also mean that the teacher came from Miyamizu village? At the end GoW, she mentioned going back to her hometown.

>Shinkai extended universe
There were lots of other characters in the ending that implied this one when they showed the montage of Tokyo people. I can't recall which ones were which but I'm pretty sure that a dedicated anon would be able to figure 'em out.

I'm hoping that the next movie that Shinkai makes will reference the characters from "Your Name". Knowing Shinkai, it would probably be another romantic film with sci-fi element.

That would have made things simpler, but Taki didn't remember anything, that was the basis for the entire issue they faced, in that they felt that they were missing something, but they didn't know exactly what it was. There were exactly as many cute teenage weeaboo girls with ugly weeaboo boyfriends in the theater as I expected.

I liked it a lot but even I could tell it was just 5cm Per Second meets Freaky Friday and I've never seen 5cm.

Mitsuha should have died, that ending was way too sappy even for a romance movie.
>>
Saw it yesterday.
9.75/10 visuals (Akira's gotta keep its podium). I especially loved the landscapes and the wonderfully realistic crater-lakes. I could recognize them for what they were right away. The cityscapes of Tokyo were also incredible, more beautiful than reality to be honest. And the tripping sequence after he drank the saké was absolutely stunning.
8/10 character designs. They were solid, unique, didn't really on lazy tricks to differentiate the characters, and mostly charming. I appreciated that the pupils weren't perfect ellipses for some reason, not sure why but it was a good decision.
7/10 soundtrack. I see what they were going for, it worked well enough, and I'm sure lots of people loved it, but most songs left me indifferent, I just don't really like the kind of songs that were used here. The ambient tracks were fitting, but not outstanding.
5.5/10 pacing/plot. Now, this looks like an harsh rating, but I consider the average score for anime to be 5/10. So it's still a bit above average. But anime tends to have pretty bad plots... It just feels like there are too many things that are glossed over. Taki never hears the name of the village? He never sees a calendar? How does she convince the mayor? I feel like they skipped this part because they didn't see a way to write it in a believable way.
Also, there are pacing issues. Coming out of the theater I thought the movie had lasted 3 hours. There are parts where the movie kind of lost me in the later half of the movie. The earlier parts were more solid imo.
All in all 8.4/10, a great movie and an awesome experience. The visuals, characters and humor make this a really fun experience. Definitely undeserving of the #1 spot on MAL though.

The use of CG when the camera was panning around the top of the mountain was the only time I have ever encountered 3DCG in anime and not found it jarring and someone deserves a goddamn award for that

I have not watched the movie itself, nor do I plan to do it (I simply have no interest in it yet).
But no matter what everyone on /a/ personally thinks about if the anime is good or not, one thing's for certain is that the anime industry on overall considers this anime some kind of great change that will bring in the normal people's attention towards anime, especially citing its financial success.
Both the AnimeBusiness 2016 Report and the anime music streaming service AniUe mention it as something very noteworthy for drawing in foreigners. A bunch of old industry codgers like Anno consider it a warning sign that the industry wants to move away from otaku as the main money source for non-kid anime.

We shall see if that movie really causes some kind of shift in the overall industry, though.

Even if the movie creates some kind of revived mainstream interest in anime, I don't think the industry would be able to shift direction away from otaku pandering quickly enough to retain that interest. People will probably be quickly driven back away until another, better movie comes out.

The scene where Mitsuha wakes up in his body for the first (shown) time and the camera rotates 360 around her head while showing off his room was amazing use of CGI as well. I watched it. Definitely not worth the praise, at least for the story. The movie was lackluster for some reasons even though I loved the visual and music. The movie's message didn't make much of an impact on me like 5cm per sec and Garden of words. I still enjoy the fanarts.

>>

>The movie's message didn't make much of an impact on me

What message? I liked the movie a lot but that's really my main issue with it, it isn't "about" anything.
Not that ever movie has to be le deep and edgy, but it seemed like the movie was trying to say something about memories, but then it ends in a really generic way that kinda kills the idea. Steins;Gate already did that shit, and Steins;Gate was all about defying fate so it at least made sense there.

It felt like it ended four times, and then a fifth ending came that completely undid the tragedy of everything else.
>>
>>155636268
It's about Japan more than anything. How it's a country of contrast, futurism and tradition, city and countryside, technology and theology, and how all these things create disparity in people. Or something. There's also that existential angst over natural disasters that's been pretty prevalent in a lot of Japanese media since the Fukushima meltdown.

I read it some time ago that Shinkai wanted to create a love story where the couple could fall in love with each other before they even met, and that fate and/or miracles played an important part. I really got hyped for this movie but in the end I couldn't like it as much as I expected and even felt a bit cheated for going to the cinema. I think I got spoiled by watching Shinkai's past work.
Btw, all Shinkai's movies have messages but he doesn't know an effective way to deliver them properly. I can rewatch 5cm, GoW, Promised, etc. but I don't think I can do it with this movie.

>>
>>155636706
>I read it some time ago that Shinkai wanted to create a love story where the couple could fall in love with each other before they even met
that almost makes it worse. it's like there's this range of time travel problems that you're willing to overlook after having accepted the main conceit as "they fell in love because they occupied each others' bodies," but only if you trust that the movie is confident that's what it wants the premise to be.

i hadn't really thought critically about that part of the movie but now i'm sure shinkai could have come up with a better way to make a story about "people falling in love before they meet"
