Part 7 has a shitload of flaws and the people in here who aggressively ignore them (usually while shitting on parts 4, 5 and 6) are the worst.

It had a slow start where Araki clearly wasn't sure what he was doing - it starts off with a very predictable race-sequence, most of the character-introductions aren't that exciting, Sandman was clearly meant to be important and seemed interested but wound up being treated like utter shit.

The first few fights are boring - the Boom Boom Family are crap, as are Mrs Robinson and Stroheim. Oyecomova and Pork Pie Hat Kid were average at best.

The supporting-characters are treated like garbage. Johnny and Gyro have no meaningful relationships outside of each other - allies like Mountain Tim, Hot Pants and Wekapipo barely have anything to do with them before their stories end abruptly, making you wonder what was even the point. This extends to the villains too, Diego was treated very poorly, and while High Voltage was good and necessary to wrap up Lucy's character-arc it completely shit on the established character Diegosaur to do it. Also Sandman.

Gyro largely takes a backseat towards the end of the story with it being all about Johnny. Johnny was fine, but the comic was at its best when him and Gyro were treated as equals, not Gyro being his sidekick or the other way around.

Lucy is a mixture of frustrating and unsatisfying storytelling and genuinely good, tense shit. Although she's the third protagonist and is a pretty interesting and compelling character who does her best, you can only see so many scenes of her crying and trembling while trying to do something sneaky and dangerous before you get bored. It was great that she showed off how cunning and ruthless her experiences had made her in High Voltage, but it was arguably too little too late by then, given that the story ended immediately afterwards.

Part 7 is my favorite part but it's far from some flawless masterpiece that's above all criticism.

Then there were a few satellite namefags who used their names mostly to continue discussions across more than one thread at a time. Part 7 flaws were its minor characters and how many of them were wasted potential.

During the part we had many scenes focusing on minor characters such as Sandman, Hotpants and Pocoloco, as if Araki was building up another ensemble cast. We get tons of scenes like this but then during mid-late Part 7 their plot lines suddenly end. I feel like this is due to poor planning on Araki's part.

We never get closure to Sandman and his tribe, why he specifically decided to aid Valentine. We never got to see his foreshadowed sand ability, which was obviously retconned for who knows what reason. We never saw what was going through his mind during the entire race. It happens with Wekapipo as well, a character with such good motivations and potential to have a lot of development. He suddenly gets killed off just to show off Valentine's menger sponge ability. The conflict with his sister is left unresolved, never mentioned again and we are left to assume the worst. Pocoloco is another character never mentioned again until the end. Hotpants and her guilty conscience? Forget about that, the development she receives is near pointless and she dies uselessly offscreen and is never mentioned again.

Some of the characters of part 7 were a clusterfuck. I’m not saying that Araki needs to tie all the loose ends, stories don’t always have a definite ending, but he should definitely give some sort of closure to the characters (and their backstories) that he developed. Araki constantly switches between focus on Johnny and Gyro to the other minor characters, never delivering a satisfying experience for either till late Part 7, and even then he mainly focused on Johnny/Gyro

I'm glad you posted this again since I can post my response without the thread dying.

I'll agree with Sandman but Johnny and Gyro were written incredibly. They're written as a duo just as much as they are as separate characters. They constantly clash ideals and learn from each other throughout the entire race and develop their friend/partnership deeper and deeper. Gyro's lessons show this perfectly. Johnny learns he can't rely on Gyro for everything but can still count on him to be there for support. Johnny's speech about hunger motivates Gyro to learn to see how others think and give up his stubborness. It's why Johnny seems completely panicked and lost when Valentine is trying to reason with him. He'd lost his main source of guidance and support, but is still able to make the right decision after everthing he'd learnt. Arigato, Gyro.

Considering how DP actually didn't fuck up hard with DiU's finale even with the smaller budget, I think they deserve an SDC-tier budget for VA to fully deliver and make the part even more hype.
