Never going to happen, in Britain the cinema is for turbo-normies going on dates or gangs of teenagers wasting a saturday
The only people that go to the cinema are hyper normies watching the latest superhero/action shitfest or skanks off to watch the latest Disney shitfest
The 10th highest grossing film last weekend was an advert for a BBC TV series. People fucking paid to watch "Peter Kay's Car Share: A Second Series Celebration"

Britbongs are shitters. That's why. Here is an image of a typical numale from london. As you can see, brits have shit genes.
>>
>>155565615
That'll be why then, they probably didn't think to have many showings outside of london/manchester/liverpool because apparently all there is outside of the big cities is countryside dotted with picturesque little villages stuck in the 1950's.

Which means you either spend £40 or more to get into a major city to see it, or you hope you can make one of the 3 fucking showings in a cinema anywhere closer, assuming they even list them anywhere.

And people wonder why these films don't do too well here.

With a population 7 times as great as NJ, and probably much shittier infrastructure. You guys seem to be much more used to travelling distances we balk at, and I would assume have transport pricing there reflects that.

Heck, I have to work for 5 hours just to afford a train to london, and I only live about 70 miles away. Train tickets are marked up a great deal you see, and it makes zero sense that they get away with it given the sheer amount of delays shitty service and general incompetence the railway companies display on as daily basis.

Driving isn't a lot better, since 13 million people live within commuting distance the roads are always packed, and within the city its much worse.

Add to that the pain in the ass of getting around london due to its terrible layout and ridiculous pop density and you end up with lots of good reasons not to go there often.

This. UK cinemas are an absolute joke, in the (one) Cineworld cinema in my town I can put down money to watch gold like the Peppa Pig Movie, 50 different livestreams of theatre, an 'autism friendly' version of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 but Your Name is nowhere in sight. If you're not in a big city you can get fucked, basically. I'd spend enough in the cinema without having a add a journey to Birmingham, Bristol or London to the mix. That's why anime films (and anything that isn't 100% mainstream fodder) tend to under-perform on this side of the ocean.
>>
>>155576724
>So the surveillance state memes were true

Yeah but theaters only do it so you buy their overpriced garbage

I long ago learned if you buy a large coke they don't search your bag filled with crisps, gummy bears, bottle of jack and pizza from the paki shop round the corner, don't even have to be sneaky about it just think of it as an expensive mixer

>>

>>
>>155577377

Hell most normalfags I know would rather watch shitty fancam versions of films on their hacked Amazon sticks than face a trip to the cinema. Like previous posters said, it's practically nothing but fresh couples there, as about the only thing the cinema hasn't lost is its status as a date spot. Though with how much traction streaming has built up in the last few years, the second China gets on our level Hollywood is fucked with a capital F.

Film actually did very will in the UK for an anime. Anime rarely gets a wide release in the UK and I'm not sure about the figures but I think A Silent Voice (released like three months later) went on to do even better.

The takings weren't amazing compared with China but given how small the market is and how the general perception of animation is in the UK - the film definitely overshot expectations. In fact, due to its success, the company behind the local release (Anime Limited) are looking to try and put a anime film in cinemas once every month or two now.

As for the film itself. It kinda blows. Like the time travel aspect was kinda dumb and it kinda serves to undermine the romantic element.

Well, arguably there is Akira/GiTS, which have done rather well off their near-cult status.

But not really. I think part of that is down to a lack of programming and advertising though. Until this year, anime in the cinemas never really happened outside film festivals.

Honestly though, it depends what you mean by "did well". Like, given how small the market is (average show sells like 1000 tops units on DVD/BD, 3000 if it's Naruto), it's impressive we get anything but I think the fact that we're getting more films like Napping Princess, Eureka 7, In this Corner of the World, Perfect Blue re-release, suggests that it's seen as a sustainable future venture.

It's a good story but they probably will get aggravated if it's subtitles and not dubbed and they're not used to it.

I had a blast. I literally saw it less than an hour ago in the local specialty theater (one of those bourgoise places where you buy reserved recliner chairs and you can order food/beer to bring to your seat).

It's not going to be a timeless classic, but /a/'s been fairly cynical about it. The plot IS good despite the glaring Frodo ("why didn't these idiots check their phones for the date or write proper notes to each other?").

It may be because a lot of what makes this film pop is the visuals on a theater-sized screen and sound system whisking you into the story. Watching it on a computer or home TV that's not the size of a person probably makes it feel less a ride than I had it (I literally reserved the first seat in the theater for that showing and chose the choicest seat in the ideal distance from the screen, right smack dab in the center of the aisle).
>>
>>155590914

better to man up sooner than later
>>
I felt like viewers didn't have enough time to see Taki and Mitsuha bond properly before the main plot began. They seemed to fall in love with each other too quickly - woulda liked to see more of their direct interactions like a phone call first and maybe an rl visit (not sure how that would resolve with the timeline stuff but desu the story pretty much did w/e it want with the 'twilight zone magic' crap, so should be fine). My favorite part of the movie was actually the scenes when Mitsuha visited Tokyo and monologued "Will Taki be annoyed/bothered... or will he be a little bit glad to see me?" That was quite human and touching.
>>
>>155590914
Because maybe you can wish on a 1200-year old cyclic death-comet and have a true romance that spans time?
>>

>>
>>155590788
Only if you're a dirty fujo. Megane/Tsubasa started being homo when Taki was acting like a feminine country girl.
Besides, Mitsuha has to do most of the leg work since the comet is affecting her town directly, as well as the fact that she's first in the timeline.

>>155591213
I can definitely see that. I felt the same way but part of the good part of the movie is that the pacing is fast enough that you don't really have enough time to dwell (overmuch) on the two main plot holes.
It's like a roller coaster for me, in a sense. You get on the rails and you let it take you on the ride; any stops and speed bursts are there to enhance the experience. I think Shinkai did a good job at that. I wasn't excessively pissed considering as a viewer we were introduced to other shit to worry about, including the wonder if they'd ever meet each other and confess.
>>
>>155591213
I think the point is that they're long distance, so meeting in real life first would negate the impact. It is a bit abrupt though.

I understand Mitsuha falling in love as she's an actual character, not played just as a plot device. Meanwhile , they downplayed Taki's scenes so much that there is not much built-up at all leading to his feelings with Mitsuha. His whole arc/pov was him leaning away from senpai and start looking towards Mitsuha.

It all seemed like Mitsuha's keikaku all along and that pissed me off as there was supposed to be 2 MCs.

Yeah, I didn't like the fact that he finally gets his date with senpai and for some reason he magically realizes he loves a girl he becomes from time to time.
All the same, he mans the fuck up considerably and does a great thing both when seeking out Mitsuha's town from half-remembered "dream"-memories and finding his way to the god's crater and also when whipping Mitsuha's friends into his plan to save the town.

The Izanagi/Izanami imagery and allusion in when Taki first climbed up there and in the Twilight scene was fucking artistry.
>>
>>155591678
So it's assumed that everything they dream will be eventually forgotten. However, Taki actually met Mitsuha 8 years before the end of the show and she even told him her name. So why doesn't he remember her name? Is he a fucking retard?

Who does for the past decade? It's all largely uninspired crap with the same plot, just with good set pieces and visual effects.

Kimi no Na wa is one of those rare films that deserves a watch on its own merits, but largely the movie-viewing populace has too much legitimate bullshit thrown at them that the only safe bets to have heartfelt feelings of love/innocence actually HAVE to be from films aimed for children (like Pixar's reputation).

I problem I had in my local area was that the local specialty theater that shows non-Hollywood AAA films didn't even advertise for KnNw until Monday. Tickets weren't even able to be bought online until fucking Wednesday.

It was a giant rush job, so despite the weeaboo concentration in my college town, not many people probably saw the advertisement poster (fat lot of good that was; hell, I didn't even see it except by pure accident because I had business near the theater), and even then people only had two days to buy tickets.

At least they had four showings (and that's more or less all, since they don't show anymore), so altogether my town at least contributed to the show's success in a small way.
>>
>>155578644

It's not our fault. The problem is the distributors and theaters being conservative with buying a foreign film without being able to count on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon-levels of hype/popularity.

Normalfag scum who dislike anime on principle rather than understanding it's just another visual medium viciously hurt the chances of this film and others like it on top of that. It generates negative hype amongst non-anime-fans in the general populace who would just be on the fence if they even had the opportunity to go see the film at a local theater.

1. The fucked up to begin with in even bothering to have Radwimps generate an English track of their songs. They've had their heads on ass-backwards from the get-go regarding a lot of decisions.
2. Everybody that's touched this movie outside of the Asian sphere has been waaaay conservative about whether it's good or bad until it finally popped in theaters. I chalk it up to very heavy Miyazaki/Ghibli exhaustion; he cannot be the figurehead of Japanese animated films anymore. He doesn't generate quite the same spark anymore with films, and we have to admit that Ghibli moves all have similar themes and tones that can legitimately become boring after your fifth or sixth one regardless of how much you enjoy them.
/a/ even wouldn't stop shitting on it from the crappy rip that doesn't do the movie any justice if seen in theaters.

It's a perfect storm of ignominy once it finally gets the opportunity to shine.

>tiny disaster
It's a fucking comet destroying a town, even in a dream, as soon as the town's name, the lake or location in general gets mentioned alarms would go off in my head and I'd immediately recognize something's up
Then it's a matter of fucking with Mitsuha and fucking the older girl

I've been pointing this out for the last few days here. Taki directly saw that comet fly by his house. He undoubtedly saw the news that Itomori was struck by a comet considering he was sitting in front of a television at the time. It's literally like asking a person who saw 9/11 firsthand if they remember a terrorist attack and they respond by asking "what?"

Also, Taki couldn't fucking remember Mitsuha's name despite the fact that she told him her name in real life 8 years before the end of the movie (not in their dreams) so he should have no reason to forget this unless he's a freaking retard. Let's say he has bad memory for the sake of argument. Why did he keep Mitsuha's hairband for 3 years and have it on his wrist when he met her in the eclipse? Makes no fucking sense.

Also it seems like Mitsuha was destined to die until Taki interfered with Mitsuha's life. So basically, Taki saved Mitsuha's life because he knew she would be doomed. However, once her life was saved, she was under no duress in the first place. The comet's death toll wouldn't have had her name on it meaning he would have had no reason to save her life. This is a simple linear time travel paradox that occurs in any fictional time travel plot that doesn't involve parallel universes.

It's just magic ain't gotta explain shit.
>>
>>155593643
>would you really remember a tiny disaster that hit a small town on the other side of the country?
In the LN it says that the disaster is part of the school curriculum now. So it is more like he forgot because it was necessary for the plot. Just like he forgot about Mitsuha giving him the braid three years before.

If anything I would say it was due to the god meddling, but it's not specifically stated. You're probably supposed to assume that like how their memories of the body swapping weren't good, other memories were being interfered with.
>>
>>155593880
>>155593837
I guess we can chalk it up to Taki being an ignorant little shit throughout high school until he matures a bit from the musubimagic.
I can really see him enjoying the comet that night in the alpha-timeline and then just waving off the disaster hitting the news the next couple days until he starts to ignore it.
I have to admit I'd do the same, since 9/11 and Haiti and the various typhoons that hit SEA, etc.

The theater I went to here in MD had about 30+ people in it, surprisingly. When I went and saw the Boy and the Beast last year, there were maybe 10 people including me and 2 friends, but that was a 11pm showing and this was 7pm.

There were 3 different sets of groups of pre-teens and young teens with a parent dragged along, and I thought that was cute. Then you had your usual weeb groups.

Also, I wish my local theater would start showing these special movies. An average ticket costs $8 there during primetime and $5 before 2pm. And this is a nice theater too with reclining seats and all that. I had to drive out an hour, spend $14 on a ticket, and sit in a 15-year old chair.
>>
>>155593956
I think they should have given a one-off mention of how it's hard for them to cohesively communicate in the sense that they don't remember very well, since the transpositions are LIKE when you first wake up and you struggle to remember dream details.

That would have solved a lot of shit, but I guess understatement was far better than overstatement in the overall result of this movie.

I haven't seen how it was drawn in the anime but places can look very different depending on where the point of view is, and Japan does have many lakes with mountains near them and towns, so it's not so unlikely that you would need someone as familiar with the area as a former resident to recognize.

Taki would have fucked it up every time he had his body. Mitsuha would keep advancing 2 steps ahead. Eventually, Mitsuha would have had sex with Miki but it's not gay because cunts aren't touching. She would write about it and taunt Taki.

Taki would put Mitsuha through some BDSM Dungeon Master to get her back.

China has a far greater weeb/population ratio. Why would you expect the US to do better than them? Being around other people seems to amplify how funny people perceive things; have you ever watched some sitcom with friends and found yourself laughing loudly at things you'd give a chuckle at if alone? Same basic principle carries over for anonymous strangers, though it takes more of them to get a similar effect.

Ehh, if you watch actual Shinto ceremonies on youtube, they might as well have rotoscoped that.

It conveys the "feeling" more of a shamanistic ritual. It's not as glitzy and glamorous as anime or smooth as dance choreography (such as in Memoirs of a Geisha) should be; it's actual women doing an ancient dance passed down through generations.

It's a lot of metered spinning in place with jingly bits when you get down to it, and that's fine.

She was pretty exhausted and running in low light, so yeah, she beefed fucking hard on an unlucky step (there were audible gasps in my theater from how brutal the landing and pain roll was).

So, is it a japanese thing to get your numbers changed often? I can understand Taki going to a machine, seeing as how Mitsuha's phone was destroyed in the past. But when Mitsuha called the number, shouldn't it have called a younger Taki? Or was it more of the magic that erased Taki's diary entries?
>>
>>155596806
If you're in the US, yes. The experience is far, far better in a theater (if you can get a good seat of course), and as well Funi and theaters seem to have botched the release in how rushed and stilted it is.

In a lot of places, it seems to be a one-day/super-limited showing alone on top of having next to no forewarning/advertisement outside word of mouth and random luck.

Oh I'm fucking stupid, for some reason I inferred that they texted each other to more quickly arrange ground rules and made out a shot of one of their phones as a recorded exchange (I think there were alternating colors for the messages but again I'm dumb).

What? Were you watching the dub or something?

I watched the sub in the US, and in the opening scene when Taki looks at Mitsuha's body in the mirror, she's only wearing panties to bed, while her tits were censored by convenient sunlight and perspective on her mirror.

in the interests of keeping everything in one thread

Just got back from watching it and I had a good time.My showing was completely sold out which was surprising for the sub premiere.

Everyone stayed quiet and kept to themselves like good filmgoers should. No kids, all adults so the atmosphere couldn't have been better

Laughs were had during onee-chan and the constant groping, all of the ladies cried at the very end when Taki and Mitsuha finally meet

The scene when Taki takes a drink of Mitsuha's Kuchikamikaze sake was really fucking cool and beautifully animated,I wish that we had one more scene like it.The comet destruction scene was pretty cool too

It was well paced for the story that it was telling, but the twist and subsequently ending was telegraphed really early on.

Despite that,it was absolutely enjoyable and I would definitely recommend it.

Yotsuha was adorable. She was sharp as a tack and that made her a very memorable character despite being just there to help out exposition.

I couldn't suppress smiling when she was freaked out by crying Taki-Mitsuha embracing herself.

I remember a similar feminine running thing in Millenium Actress. It was a good highlight of how she was living in the olden days.
>>
>>155597578
>It was a good highlight of how she was living in the olden days.
Well, she was just very traditionally-raised, as well being a girl from the boonie mountain villages. It's not like she was a Showa era girl compared to Taki's Heisei. It also shows it in how sort of tiny Mitsuha is compared to larger and more exuberant JKs when she visits Tokyo.

The running scene in Milennium Actress was done by Toshiyuki Inoue. He's also anther famous veteran animator who's great at making realistic animation, though he doesn't do hyper realistic stuff often like Okiura. Inoue's in very high demand as an animator, so it's hard for people to book him. He knows Okiura, and have worked together many times before.

In my theater, I noticed a lot of Caucasian parents bringing in small children.

Just because it's animated doesn't mean you should bring kids in here, especially if they keep telling their mother they don't understand what's going on because the audio is in Japanese and they can't read fast enough for the subs.

Also some parents sitting next to me let out a gasp when they did the whole boob grabbing stuff.

Wait about ten years for those people to essentially age out of the population for these sorts of things. The upside to globalized entertainment is that that sort of sheer ignorance on media is starting to die off if not only from increased visibility but also access to internet information regarding the material.

Deadpool was also an example of dumbass parents bringing their kids where they didn't belong because they were too lazy to look up what they were paying money to see.

Don't frown, Anon. After a couple years of going to movies alone you realize that it's not really awkward unless it's a woman's film (love or drama).

Once you get in there and sit down everybody is too busy to really mentally contemplate the other movie goers other than hoping they don't choose to sit near you so you can have both armrests to yourself.

I wish my area wasnt so overpopulated with weebs, Would be nice if I went to a screening and the theatre was almost empty. Last time I went to a big anime gathering in my area (Anime north, Toronto) I was pretty much disgusted and overwhelmed at the same time. Things like this, I wish I was a millionaire who could just watch movies in a private theatre alone. If its really good on the big screen, I don't want to miss out but at the same time I am also scared of crying out loud like a baby. I've gone through some tough shit which lead to me having no friends or anyone to talk to.

Well, the difference there is that it's just the sex difference rather than a falsely-perceived social humiliation.
It's not like the biddies watching those movies with you are going to make fun of you for watching what they like; the worst that could happen is some middle-aged lady makes conversation with you on the contents of the movie because she wants a talking partner or a young rape victim-to-be.
>>
>>155600197
Its not really the other customers / watches having a problem. Its the theater itself.

A lot of theaters are adopting a "can't go in alone" policy that prevents people from seeing movies on their own.

I think its to prevent theater shootings.

I haven't seen this yet but the second they do, they lose my business at least.
That's a pretty retarded policy though, since a shooter could just buy TWO tickets "for a friend" and then walk into the theater with one later. How the fuck would they enforce this against a real murderer?
>>
>>155599164
I've only had one bad theater experience and it sounds so much like the typical greentext exaggeration of a bad movie experience. It was at a showing of Ressurection F and he was the most cliche dudebro you could imagine with four others with him. He walked in literally screaming the kamehameha and then did it a few more times when he didn't get a reaction. He went on to shout at the trailers at the top of his lungs. I don't recall everything exactly but I remember these was a trailer for God's Not Dead or something where he screamed "Because God doesn't exist you stupid bitch" at one point. I have no idea how a person could be so desperate for attention and the theater never responded to his ""jokes"". Someone beat my buddy to reporting him because an attendant finally came in before the trailers were over and from then on he stayed quiet and sulked.

This showing was fantastic though. Theater was about half-full. People actively laughed at the jokes. A couple people laughed at the pen drop, but it was sort of a nervous laugh. A lot of nervous laughing at her reaction to the "I love you" on her hand. Theater was silent during all the dramatic moments and I could hear some sniffling. Didn't hear any clapping at the end.
>>
>>155599642
>Everyone clapped

I can honestly tell you it's no overexaggeration. Granted, it generally depends on the sort of movie your watching, but people legitimately clap at the screen all the fucking time. I'm legit sorry you had to be put through that; that's flat harassment of a customer.

Give the detailed story on Yelp if they have a profile and you're okay outing yourself as a loner (which is fine since hopefully you never give that place another dollar again).

People who are afraid of shooters so much these days are so goddamn retarded, man. They're frightening because they can happen at random like a mugging or assault, not because you find some guy who fits an arbitrary loner standard they imagined unless he obviously looks like a meth head.

>I'm in New Jersey.
Considering the anti-gun climate of NJ (of which is exemplary even for the North or even CA), I'm not surprised. However that's seriously some terrible shit they did to you. Pathetic people.

I'm in VA and I've never experienced it yet, but we have a fair senior population in the areas I've lived so nobody really bats an eye about people seeing movies on their lonesome. They'd lose a fair amount of customers, particularly for capeshit and just /co/ geeks taking a little time out of their day to see a flick..
>>
>>155600427
It wouldn't bother me if it's done when there's someone live doing a presentation/speech/performance/whatever because it's to show your appreciation to that person in a good manners way if nothing else, but when you're clapping at a screen it's too weird.

I guess it's social to affirm that you enjoyed the thing you watched to the rest of the audience but it's still pretty crazy.

>>155600439
Is this also actually a thing where they'll only sell single tickets? And it's genuinely because they're scared someone will shoot the place up as if you couldn't walk straight into a cinema anyway?

For some reason the cinema manages to show how batshit you guys are over some things.

I've never heard of any "no singles" policy at any theater around here, and I all but exclusively watch movies in theaters solo.

I caught a 1 PM showing of the movie yesterday while all normal people were at work, there were only two of us in the theater, we never interacted, and everything was fine. Maybe there was a bigger matinee crowd at the noon showing earlier, but that one was the dub.

Fear policies in the US are pretty stupid overall. Even Obama's gun research report after Sandy Hook showed that guns actually don't add or reduce gun crime in the US because it's mostly locality based (i.e. Detroit sucks because it's Detroit).
It's the same reasons why the airport security checks still are in place; fear, momentum, and lack of people realizing as a group that if bad shit did go down, piddly policies like these aren't going to really stop it considering how difficult they are to enforce and how easily ignored they are given human apathy for 7-6pm security jobs.

Still mildly pissed that the subs were timed a bit before the text on her hand was fully shown.

I'm 80% sure it's trolling, or at least a temporary measure after the Dark Knight shooting.

I've never yet experienced a no singles policy at theaters and to be honest I've only EVER first heard about it IN THIS VERY THREAD, of which other people mentioned it was a troll joke meme.

With a grain of salt, it's probably fucking rare since everybody realized at least eventually that nothing happened.

They didn't even sub Taki's "Who are you? on Mitsuha's notebook, it was awkward. Or maybe I couldn't see it because it was white text on white background but jesus christ funi.
>>
>>155600931
wait really?

They moved it to the top I believe. When she opened the notebook it read "Who are you?" on top of the screen.
>>
>>155599821
Don't say that about my wife. Mitsuha's 前世 is fine where it is.
>>

>moved it to the top
gee, what a great idea when there's a bigass notebook with moon runes dead center of the screen

Or you could try not being an edgelord and actually make friends.

>Mitsuha's dialect throughout the film
It was a tough movie to sit through, but I did it.

Saw it a few hours ago with some normie friends. I overheard a rustled theater worker complaining that all the calls they were getting were asking about Your Name. Movie was screened in the smaller theater and was filled to ~2/3 capacity. Crowd was mostly weebs. Screen was kind of fucked up and the bottom of the subs were cut off. I really liked the movie, though 5cm/s is still my favorite Shinkai film. Art was top notch, music was pretty good, especially the song that played right as the comet struck the town. Was actually surprised that Shinkai didn't pull his standard "they don't see each other ever again" ending. Though I would have fine with it if he had.
Nice to see that US theaters have no idea who was going to see this, all the previews were for kids movies. Almost everyone who saw it at my place was early/mid 20's.

Overall, glad I waited to see it. Will probably pick up the novel too when it releases here.

Oh god, I didn't think about it because I was mostly ignoring it but that's fucking true.
I got previews for Wimpy Faggot Kid and Dispicable Cashout M3.

I'm sure I was the only one in the theater that appreciated her cute dialect.

Could have been a more artistic ending that way, but you sell millions more repeat viewing tickets in Japan when you give audiences exactly what they're hoping for at the end. If you dangle a happy satisfying conclusion and then yank it away by them walking away forever, then the viewing audiences riot. Or at least they don't go back several times more.

We didn't get any kids movie trailers, just the usual arthouse theater limited-release trailers (Paris Can Wait and Tommy's Honour), then GotG 2, then the movie.

>all the previews were for kids movies
I saw it at a film festival showing and I guess it was the obligatory animated movie for kids but there wasn't a single one in the theater
>>155601392
it's a change from the usual bittersweet endings shinkai has done before but doesn't completely wrap everything up
it's about as perfect an ending you could want

Was it in a standard chain multiplex, an independently-operated screen, or a theater that runs a bunch of limited-release films?
