The Queen didn't warrant anything other than a hunter. Kite was graded high enough to body the ENTIRE hive and it's occupants on his own. Pitou was the only reason he got beat in the first place and even Gon and Killua were both vastly stronger than any of the other ants pre-nen.

The palace ofc never made sense. Probably to prevent it being an international issue when they nuked one of the few countries that didn't have hunter association members walking around and was a known dictatorship.

Nanika isn't really all that great. All you have to do is to kill her before letting Killua make his wish.

Man, the buildup for it was agonizing, but I honestly felt it was worth it. I don't want to call this the "hurf durf best manga/animu of all tiem", but I wish authors/creators could have as much freedom Togashi did for this series if it means to pull off something like this at the end of an arc.

I can understand some underlying issues about the arc itself, but at the same time, it's incredibly hard for me to hate what the ending of the arc accomplished.

These might not be the most well written characters, but I think Togashi's efforts towards making them more than just one dimensional does not go unnoticed. Each character at least has gone through a complete different spectrum personality wise and I like that, when someone bothers making a character experience a taste of both worlds while not letting it be just in one side.

They wanted to avoid dealing with the situation directly because they knew it would end badly and they would be blamed for all the deaths.

So they handed complete control to Netero and the hunters so they could take the blame. Netero decided to draw Meruem away from the palace and fight him one on one before the nuke because he wanted to fight someone who had the power to kill him.
