The anime was being planned long before the game failed. Going by interviews the anime staff were given freedom from the very beginning though. The director has said one of the reasons he thought doing the show was a worthwhile venture was that when he was approached to make the anime he was told the anime should be its own thing and doesn't have to fit into the game or manga stories.

Then, Tohru randomly comes back. However her dad is telling her to come back again, but she refuses. Kobayashi tries to talk to him, but he breaks her glasses as a warning. Kobayashi confesses her love for Tohru in front of dad.
Dad and Tohru decide to duke it out in another dimension.

The article has a few decent points on similarities. They both have mysteries at their core that only become more mysterious as the series unfolds. The way exposition is done is mostly just through characters talking to each other naturally leaving the viewer to piece together meaning from it. And that the show itself never fully explains the workings of the mechanisms at the centre of them like sandstar. And with both shows you can either spend a lot of time thinking about the way those things work or just enjoy it as it's shown to you.
