What went wrong?

Its a service issue.

Crunchyroll effectively out competed fansubs by releasing content at the same time as release.

Fansubs might resurface if netflix licenses more series. And hopefully more complete series as well.

Fansubs are done by fans

Anime is so shit now it has no fans.
>>
>>155480737

Fansubs still look dead for me.
>>
>>155480806
>Might resurface
Were not there yet.
>>
CrunchyRoll beat them at their own game. Hypothetically, they could just go back and sub older anime that was never touched before, but that wouldn't get them any epeen, so they don't.
>>
Daiz summoning thread
>>
>>155480857
Pretty much. Official subs are better and faster than fansubs in 90% of cases and since fansub groups love their e-peen and drama, they can't be bothered to work on more obscure anime.
>>
It's been said, but it really is Crunchyroll. They release most subs each season.
>>
Its not crunchyroll per se
Its bots like horriblesubs that rip them
>>
>>155479238

no one really wants to sub for free anymore

and you think about it, why should they?
>>
>>155480857
>Hypothetically, they could just go back and sub older anime that was never touched before
Or even ones that were done poorly back in the day. As far as I'm aware there's only one.hack//sign fansub and it's bloody awful. And Evangelion could do with one that standardises things with the newer entries in the franchise
>>
>>155482038
Forgive the newfag question, but why has there never been any sort of legal action agaisnt HS?
Despite people saying they rip from Crunchyroll, CR themselves seem to tolerate them.
>>
>>155479600
>>155479837
Fuck off, there's plenty of anime that don't get picked up by Crunchy, but nobody will touch them because they can't just nitpick on Crunchy's translation and modify some parts like the bitter translators they are.
If they actually cared they would work on those untouched shows.
>>
>>155479238
this is a pretty garbage season so far
>>
>>155483629

>>
>>155485121
>Saying this when Delta was shit
>>
>>155485121
Now I want you to compare that to when we had only fansubs and at least 2/3 were not subbed while one or two shows got subbed by five people competing for epeen

Also funny you say Delta because I think some anon took over it when [gg] did their usual bullshit and dropped the show
>>
because it became a game of "who's faster" than "who has the better quality subs."
>>
>>155485146
We didn't know that before it came to it, though.
And it was just one single example, there are more that don't get picked up by CR, Funi or others.
>>155485171
[gg] didn't drop Delta, they dropped Kurumukuro because they lost their translator.
>>
>>155480806
I would have liked to do Tsugumomo.
Unfortunately no one else wanted to. It can be difficult to find TLs that have the confidence and skill to pull off an OTL compared to checking over a CR TL.
>>
>>155485171
>at least 2/3 were not subbed

When was this? 1993 when people were mailing each other VHS tapes?

Almost all airing shows had 2 or more sub groups working on them with some exceptions. It was a pretty sizable population with a lot of competition and variety in release times, quality, and sub style. I'm referring more to 2006-2012.

I don't really get the hate for fansubs.

I'm watching chevalier d'eon and I like the type setting and occasional tl note about Bible stuff.

As someone who watches a lot of old shows I appreciate the work of fansubbers. CR subs look very boring and sloppy in comparison.
>>

That was because he hacked a bunch of servers and got caught, not because of copyright infringement.

If you were around for gg's Star Driver and Madoka live streams, I think those ran off the hacked servers.

Fansubs destroyed themselves. Fansubs ing is work, and if you don't work for money you work for kudos. This resulted in two things.

1) A community burning itself out from incessant Internet Drama and squabbling over e-peen. Add in your usual autistic sperglord weeaboos whining about karaoke OPs and honourifics and you have a state of perpetual civil war.

2) The overriding obsession with speedsubs and being first out there for maximum Internet Points created a toxic, destructive atmosphere which consumed any of the other pleasure in subbing and finally exploded when Crunchyroll beat everyone at their own game.
>>
>>155479238
>Speedsubs are dead
Fixed
>>
They will unkill themselves if circumstances call for it. Like if Amazon and Netflix fuck everything up.
>>
>>155479238
The only ones that are dead are fastsubs, and I don't fucking miss them. They were a bunch of e-penis whores anyway.
High quality fansubs still existing. But they are obscure because 99% of the anime fanbase eat any shit.
>>
>>155493873
Even if you can understand Japanese fairly well, it's still more of a mental effort than it's appropriate for a supposedly relaxing hobby like watching anime which is something you do for fun. With good subs you can turn down the volume and turn the language part of your brain off, it's a more enjoyable experience than listening carefully trying to discern who said what and pausing every once in a while to look up some random idiom from the sengoku period. I miss fansub.
>>
>>155479238
They're not really dead, it's just that it's stupid to compete with CR
So when there are no subs, like LWA fansubs happen
Or for example when Funi was late with DR3 last year fansubs would happen
>>
I don't count them as dead as long as shit gets subbed within a year.
Really, fansubbing has always been slow and bad, we had a few golden years but that wasn't the norm. Even then they weren't always super quick or good.
I think most of us grew accustomed to having fansubs/licenses quickly and with at least not total ESL tier TL. At least I did.

That said I'm a bit surprised Tsugumomo didn't get picked for simulcast though (seemed like an easy pick), same could be said for the fact that the new Tenchi OVA(s) aren't getting the amount of attention I expected them to get.

>>155487370
There isn't and never was hate for fansubs.
People stopped doing fansubs because they got outcompeted by CR.
Crunchyroll has actual business relationships with the Japanese companies, letting them get the scripts early and release subs at the same time the show airs instead of days/weeks later.
Most people absolutely prioritize speed, and will watch the CR subs now rather than the fansubs released in a few days.

The whole point of doing fansubs is for worthless internet epeen (you sure as hell don't make any money off of it). If everyone is watching CR rips instead of your subs, you don't get enough epeen to motivate you to keep doing the hard work of translating.
>>
>>155498842

It is true.
>>
I can't complain too much, official simulcasts + fansubs pick up a higher percentage of anime than fansubs alone did in the days before subbed simulcasts. The stuff CR misses still often gets fansubbers, and we always complained about "subs fucking where".

Besides, it's not current anime I want to complain about. I wish we had more than one fucking sub group (and a pretty slow one) working on '70s and '80s shows.

Legit anime streaming hadn't been big for even two years at that point. Back then I was still optimistic that they would actually improve and even surpass fansubs one day, because honestly, they have all the cards they need to do that.

Sadly that day has never come, and I grow more and more pessimistic about it as the years go by.

Also note that "CR rippers" in the context of that post doesn't refer to direct rips like HS but groups that use simulcast subs/video as a base and improve on that.

The worst part about LN translations is that the people who typically read these aren't the sort who read books normally. So they're more than happy to accept sentences and grammar that'd earn a C- at best in highschool english.

Retards. All of you, retards. There is no dead or alive to fansubbing.

Fansubs exist because of a lack of official subs. Especially a lack of timely official subs. That's the only reason. Fansubs still tend to show up for anything without timely official subs for anything reasonably interesting.

It's not even an anime-specific concept. It's always been like this.

Is funimation dead? Funimation is terrible.
>>
>>155511802

Nah, I think they partnered with CR, they are still dubbing series.
>>
>>155510743
there's tons of stuff that never gets fansubs or only gets terrible fansubs by some pinoy "translating" j>c>s>e. the strike witches ovas have been out for years and still only have machine tl subs because people decided it was good enough.
>>
>>155512767
That would explain the most recent dip in CR sub quality
>>
>>155513093
I think they only do dubs and physicals though.

The dip is former fansubbers losing the flame after being molded into squares in the corporate world.
>>
>>155510532
I would use fansubs if I didn't have to worry about you fucks spoiling me on everything.

Is this the /a/ version of the Bogdanoff Rundown?

Fansubbing is far from dead, it's just radically changed.

Now it gets the privilege of standing on the shoulders of CR. No longer do fan subbers need to waste their time timing and subbing the episodes manually themselves. Now all they need to do is rip the sub file from HS releases, remove memes, edit the translations ever so slightly to their liking, add their preferred Typesetting style, add TL Notes if applicable, and maybe gussy up the OP with sing along style visuals.

CR is doing 95% of the work themselves. I only ever see maybe, MAYBE 10 points of contention with their translation s, even in the memiest of titles.

Using their effort as a foundation allows fans the best of both worlds in terms of speed and quality. Fan subbing isn't dead. It's better than it's ever been before.

Y'know, theoretically.

Operation Transport Raws:

>One computer located in Tokyo, in an appropriate area where you can get all the regular channels as well as TVK and Teletama. Needs to be in a building where it's possible to mount satellite dishes. Must have 100mbit internet.
>One computer located in Osaka. Must have 100mbit internet.
>Two PT2 tuner cards, one Friio and one DVB-S2 USB tuner, as well as various signal amplifiers, antennas, satellite dishes, card readers and other tools, total cost most likely not less than $1500 USD
>A distro server with at least 400GB of extremely fast RAID disk, a gigabit internet connection and at the very least 50TB of transfer per month (that's an average of around 20MB/s 24/7).

by what metric is it failing? BD sales haven't been published since vol 1 comes out this month, and if the financial backing they got on their crowdfunding crap, and the netflix backing is taken into account, I'm pretty sure they'll make money.
