I've always thought of it as the same reason why imoutos are so popular as a 'love interest' in anime. Once someone has reached a certain age you have to actually rely on being someone who is desirable to hang out with, kids just play with each other because they live close/their parents are friends so it allows the viewer to suspend their disbelief as to why the MC actually has bitches.

How the fuck the "female childhood friend" trope/cliche is a thing anyway? When i was a kid i was thinking that girls are fucking retarded and never enjoyed hanging out with them. I don't think anyone did before puberty hit and you suddenly realised that sexual attraction was a thing.
