The problem wasn't the casting. ScarJo has no personality, but neither did Major.

The problem was that the source material is fucking garbage. Ghost in the Shell has always been a pretentious pile of shit that weebs pretend to enjoy to fit in.

Even with a movie budget I don't think you could really find fitting actors who could do the characters justice, or make them quite look the part. Going back to your question, who'd play someone like Revy, or Rock? What about all the other characters?

Lots of people say Samuel Jackson should play Dutch, but he's kind of getting up there in the years (Dutch is probably not even in his 40's), and there's way more characters still. Which arc do you make a film of first? You're not fitting an entire season into a movie, not while keeping it good.

There's about a 50/50 split with men and women in the series, especially when you count enemies and not just main characters. A gender switch could go over well, and I think fans of the show who watched the OVAs will enjoy it.

Of course, I think a movie where Revy (male) guns down hundreds of women might get some angry response from feminists in the west...
