Is the manga unpopular in Japan? It seemed very weird for the show to do so poorly that it couldn't even average 500 discs sold.

The anime feels so rushed. Is the manga any better tough?

Masamune-kun no Revenge was forgotten literally halfway through.

It was refreshing in that the childhood friend got fucking murdered like halfway in, but it was so rushed that I had no idea what was even going on. Then there was that weird bit at the end where they show parts of the manga that they have no intention of every animating, like Aku no Hana.

I really loved it, AOTS for me. It was the show I looked forward to the most every week, because it didn't take itself seriously at all.
