Why are SAOfags so wrong about their own show?
Everywhere it's discussed I see the >muh first arc is good but the second S1 arc is bad meme
Now, both seasons are entirely awful - don't get me wrong. But S1Arc2 was, quite literally, the only time the show had
>Any animation at all (ie: no 1/2 episode still frames with barely animated mouths and "fight scenes" that were shaking pictures"
>Even a semblance of character development (for Suguha - at least, until the end when she relapses)
>An actual enemy to hate (Kaiba literally did nothing until the end, end then said something along the lines of "I don't even know why I did this anymore")
>etc.
Is it literally just because people couldn't handle the incest? Is that it? I know the show is terrible, but having watched it just to make fun of people online, I can't help but think the fans are stupider than ever, considering they don't even know when their own show barely approaches mediocre (as opposed to when it's always awful)

>>155376350
Of course the show is garbage.
My issue is that the concern over where the show is most, or least, trash is entirely wrong by even the retards who like it.

I want to touch Sugu's Sugus
>>155376221
I hate it because it reduced Asuna to a damsel in distress character when she was formally one of the highest ranking players in SAO. It feels regressive and like out of place rape fetish fan service.
To be fair though I hate all of SAO anyhow. But I think the first arc is less viscerally upsetting.
>it's the Kayaba had no reason for doing what he did meme
He knew exactly why he did it. He dreamed of a world where virtual online games become reality. He wanted to make the game as real as possible by preventing logouts and making people die when they die in the game. He also wanted to live in this world hence Heathcliff. He just didn't tell Kirito about this because this reason sounds really fucking stupid after 4000 deaths. He killed himself afterwards to prevent facing retribution.
>>155376650
She still did more to rescue herself than Kirito did, though. At least until the end.
>Trying to get through that stupid library area with the rape monsters
>Trying to escape the cage
That's also why Rosario was the only even slightly passable part of S2 (again,
despite being awful) - Asuna at least did something the whole time, and we didn't have to suffer with the self insert faggot.
Because SAO Arc is wish fulfillment at its finest. People self inserted as Kirito even if they don't want to admit it so of course they have to love it.
ALO is just not the same anymore. The magic is gone. The stakes aren't high anymore and being a different game means people don't have an attachment to it.
>>155376808
I like the first arc best but I think you're not wrong. I know it's shit but I like it anyway.
SAO was good
ALO was...... weird
GGO was shit
Mama rosario was great
Ordinal Scale was the best
>>155376808
So it breaks down into the pokemon nostalgiafag problem? I know the show is literally Self Insertion: The Show, but to be so blinded is almost crazy
I just can't understand how "fans" of the show enjoy the objectively worse parts of it. Anyone who enjoys the Gun Gale arc is legitimately retarded.
Some friends and I marathoned both seasons over about a week, playing a drinking game as we went. It still wasn't enough to make Gun Gale not make me want to kill myself.
>>155376991
None of it was good.
The only reason ALO is even passable is because it managed to be only mediocre, as opposed to exceptionally bad.

Imo, ALO is bad bc they talk all the time when they cast some spell, and the MC was too op, he have some special skill that no one have from the beginning, that's make it boring. At least in SAO every player have some kind of special skill, not exclusively to some special characters, I like that set up, if MC can have some special skill, so as other characters. In 2nd season there's nothing special.
>>155378838
While you may have a point, at least the fight scenes in ALO are animated. That trumps the rest.
Nearly every fight scene in SAO (and every other arc besides Rosario) was literally
>Single image
>Shaking/some kind of animation effect (wind/colors that are "slashes")
>Kirito running
>Repeat

But let me shit on SAO for a minute.
Remember the end of GGO where Sinon's bully brought a freaking handgun to school? Remember how she tried to fucking kill Sinon because "lunch money"? So other than how it's nearly impossible to get an illegal handgun as a Japanese high school student uhh
>Sinon takes the gun and fires at a can

>Manages to stab Kirito in the single spot where he had the smallest bit of tiny, thing plastic protection
>He is totally fine
Or
>Starts off in GGO with that stupid cowboy minigame
>Explicitly mention the price of the game
>Explicitly mention that Kirito has exactly twice that - ie: two tries
>Any sane, even mediocre narrative would have him fail once and pass the second time when the stakes are higher
>He manages to beat it in one try without breaking a sweat or wasting money.
>>155376221
You just value different things. Some fights had more animation, but the tension was mostly lower with Kirito's high stats and no death mechanism. The enemy was hateable, but in a really skeevy way. And character development was in no way exclusive to ALO.
>>155380596
>Some fights had more animation
More like animation v. none at all.
>but the tension was mostly lower with Kirito's high stats and no death mechanism
There was literally never a shred of tension. I watched every bit of this shit show, and not once was there any tension that
>Kirito would lose
>That even if he did manage to lose, it wouldn't matter anyway
>The enemy was hateable, but in a really skeevy way.
As any enemy should be
>And character development was in no way exclusive to ALO.
Kirito never once learns or grows in a meaningful way. None of the side characters do, minus Suguha (who reverts by the end of the arc anyway). Maybe you can make a case for Asuna at the end of Rosario, but that's about it
>>155380887
See I don't get why SAO gets so much heat when far far worse shows exist in the industry. For example, compare SAO to the heaping piles of crap that comes out of kyoani.
>there is no tension!
vs
>there is no plot
>>155376221
Holy fuck, I thought I was the only person who thought this way.
The SAO arc jumps around way too much. You can't get attached to the characters or the plot when it just shows little vignettes at a time. ALO was at least a consistent narrative. The other arcs are the same but they're so mediocre that they have other crippling problems.
The movie is unironically good, though. Kawahara has improved a lot since he first wrote SAO.
>>155376221
This is the same people who love Naruto and are willing to watch 20 episodes of pure garbage just for 1 episode where there is a pretty decent 10 minute fight.
>>155381186
>Muh Kyoani boogieman
There are certainly Kyoani shows with plot - and even the ones without it at the very least have animation.
Which is more than I can say for almost the entirety of SAO. The amount of times the show broke out into something like
>Still picture with mouths covered to not have to animate mouths
>Still frame fight scenes
>Standing and talking without any action
But we're not discussing KyoAni here, we're discussing the abortion known as SAO.
>>155381194
>Holy fuck, I thought I was the only person who thought this way.
>The SAO arc jumps around way too much. You can't get attached to the characters or the plot when it just shows little vignettes at a time. ALO was at least a consistent narrative. The other arcs are the same but they're so mediocre that they have other crippling problems.
It's stunning that no one seems to understand this. ALO manages to be the only consistent narrative in a two season show, besides maybe the Rosario arc. It was all still shit, but at least ALO had an actual arc.
Besides MC, did anyone else actually have a super unique power?
That didn't turn out to actually be the big bad?
>>155381476
Sinon aways claimed to be the best sniper.
Even if the retard spent more time up close and in close quarters to her enemies to actually be an efficient sniper.
Everything about GGO is infuriating.
Also, the AIDS girl from the last animated arc had spent so long in the game that she was developed something special, if I remember right.
>>155381384
Normally what happens is
>show comes out
>has flaws
>some people enjoy it and others drop it
>criticism exists but mellow
but for SAO
>some people enjoy it
>some others drop it
>some others hate it and watch it to ruin it for everyone else by criticizing everything about it
It's a huge stretch to say SAO is the worst anime ever. SAO is a scapegoat and there's nothing more meta you can do in the anime community than hate on SAO. Watch some youtube reviewers on SAO. Read the comments and watch how they flock.
Of course infamy=money so this isn't bad for the franchise.
>>155381805
How wrong can you be?
>some people enjoy it
It was extremely popular, and simply because it managed to up the wish fulfillment to max.
>some others hate it and watch it to ruin it for everyone else by criticizing everything about it
The hate was only in proportion to its popularity. You're not going to argue that Naruto is "hated too much" when, of course, it was also one of the most popular shows ever.

>>155381608
That's worse than I thought. I was assuming I was just forgetting someone. Damn.

>>155381194
It's mainly due to how they had to adapt the material given how the initial novel was first written.
The first season of the anime is pretty much a mash of the first volume and a collection of side stories that composed the second volume. The first volume itself jumped immediately to the "end game" of the story, where you see Kirito solo the floor boss and unveil his Dual Swords skill. By making the whole adventure of SAO close its doors in one novel, it makes it pretty hard to carry on the story afterward by losing the main selling point. Not only that but from then on forces the main character Kirito to be a Gary Stu character because we did not get to see his growth at all during the time he was playing SAO despite having his "beta tester" label. This shifts the selling point of the series from being in the death game of SAO to primarily following our overpowered protagonist Kirito.
Kawahara ironically didn't begin serializing the SAO series until after he gained traction off serializing Accel World. That said, as the novels were an adaptation of one of his earlier works, his inexperience when he was writing the initial SAO novels shows.
I haven't read the Alicization novels to speak for his growth as an author in how he adapted that arc from the web novel, but I can say that Ordinal Scale as well as some of the spoilers I've read about Alicization's ending shows how much he has grown. Rather than wrapping up the story on SAO then and there, he found a way to continue the plot while expanding on the overall world building.

The 2nd arc was like watching someone play Mario with pixie wings. It also could've help arc 1's pacing issues if it was 2 cour and the 2nd arc was omitted. So arc 2 not only killed off Asuna's characterization, but also hurt arc 1's chance of fixing one of its biggest flaws by simply existing.

As shitty as "your princess is in another castle" is from the overall writing perspective, for what it's worth, Asuna demonstrated an admirable amount of internal fortitude and strength throughout that stupid arc. Sorry, I should say that, those fighting scenes didn't have more value to me than the other scenes. If you look at it as a fighting anime then it garbage, the MC should've die multiple times. They can add all kinds of effects to it, make those fighting scenes but that didn't add any value to the story, just like those super hero films, they destroy a whole city (very awesome scene) and it's still a movie for children. If those scenes too awkward, I can ignore part of it, to me it's just like other scenes.

>>155384517
Considering his story is in plain view on wikipedia I'm guessing many know his story but few people put two and two together.
Yuuki
>got HIV from a tainted blood injection
>turned into full blown AIDS
>couldn't go to high school due to illness
>doctors gave her 6 months to live (I think) but she survived much longer
>one of her final wishes was to go back to high school
>death before graduation
White
>hemophiliac injected with tainted blood
>turned to full AIDS
>was kicked out of his high school due to complaints by teachers and parents because of his illness
>wanted to go back to school
>doctors gave him 6 months to live but he lived 5 more years
>courts declared he must be allowed back to school
>died 1 month before graduation
The similarities are there. I won't go full politics on the importance of White's story during the time but he was a iconic figure that changed the stigma on AIDS.
I just wanted to point this out because I've seen people claim that Yuuki's story was forced unrealistic bullshit as if people don't die from illnesses lmfao.

Only for certain parts of the first arc, because of the silly timeskips.
>Lack of character development
This may be something of an issue, but that doesn't mean there wasn't any development at all.
>Lack of actual fucking animation in an animated show
The animation and visuals is usually what's praised most by critics, so the fact you're one of the few if not only people claiming this doesn't really lend weight to this argument (which you keep repeating in this thread)
>OP characters with few, if any, flaws
The only time Kirito really does anything "Over Powered" would be in his fight against Gleam Eyes, and that was after the boss's health was already brought down by everyone else. Before that, we only see him meddeling with lower level players.
He's very good at games, but not in a way that's really OP, and whenever there's actual conflict he never manages to solve any problem alone, and it's always through the help of others.
>Helped usher in a boring, cliche-filled genre
That's not a "legitimate reason" at all.

ALO is the only thing that gets hard to watch for me. GGO picks up after episode 2 so I don't really know what to say. Different strokes.
That little arc that came after GGO and before mother's rosario was really good. It wasn't serious at all and the cast was playing an MMO like an actual MMO for once. Klein was fucking around and no one gave him too much crap because it's just a fucking video game. The pacing was also good.

>The animation and visuals is usually what's praised most by critics, so the fact you're one of the few if not only people claiming this doesn't really lend weight to this argument (which you keep repeating in this thread)
Rewatch SAO and GGO. The team goes out of their way to cut corners so much that there are entire episodes where mouths are covered by hands/cups/etc. and characters literally sit in their seats stock still. Nothing is animated. The fight scenes - minus the ones in Rosario and ALO - suffer the same way.
Also
>anime critics
>The only time Kirito really does anything "Over Powered" would be in his fight against Gleam Eyes,
He never loses. Never. Even in the one game where he could actually die, he still manages not to lose. Not to mention he hacks the game to save the pixie daughter, but somehow this never comes up again.
Still, I'll quote the actual show to prove this point. In GGO he literally says that he can
>Predict the predictions
before the actual game can even create them. Holy fuck. How is that not OP?
>Considering your first example (Look up a bit of Norse Mythos btw), I'm going to assume those "moments" are only "ridiculous" because you weren't paying attention to the episode.
One example doesn't disprove my point. Similarly, they could have had some kind of lead up or have mentioned it before hand. It came out of nowhere, and I'm positive most audiences would not have understood it.

From my recollection Kirito loses against
>Heathcliff
>Heathcliff 2 (saved by Asuna)
>Suguha katana bout
>Kyouji the serial killer
>Yuuki
>Yuuki 2
Also death gun was beating Kirito in a 1v1 before Sinon jumped in.
Is this a lot? Nope he stills wins a lot. If we compare him to definite non Gary Stus like Son Goku who has roughly a 53% win rate in db/z/super, Kirito still seems pretty flawless. However, it's not like Mayweather level flawless.
I think freaking Kazuma from Konosuba may have a better win rate than Kirito. Kazuma won something like 75% of his fights.

Define "loses". Because he couldn't protect the Black Cats. Couldn't defeat Heathcliff, even when he wasn't cheating, and needed Asuna to cheat to save him. Couldn't beat his own cousin. Was nearly killed in the third arc. Any significant "win" he had was always through other people carrying him.
>he hacks the game
Just because you left your Facebook account logged in at a public computer doesn't mean you got "hacked" when someone decides to abuse the power you gave them.
Similarly, Yui even explains that she used the console to use her admin powers, and Kirito only used her admin credentials to move her code. This is a middle-schooler's idea of what "hacking" is.
>Predict the predictions
The game takes attention to detail, and has NPCs look where they're going to attack. All he was doing is what any standard martial artist would do to read an opponent, and then using the games guidance to correct his mistakes.

>The animation and visuals is usually what's praised most by critics
I actually agree with the other dude. There's a lot of static shots, and the sword skills by and large were just a bunch of little laser light shows. Go watch season 1 and then go watch Mother's Rosario. I have no clue what happened, but the difference in quality of animation (at least during the fight scenes) was night and day. Sword skills were actually properly animated for once.
Pic related. It's 8 consecutive frames of Asuna's Quadruple Pain. Yes, it's animated in 1's, which as far as I know, never happens elsewhere, at least in the TV series. You don't get pew pew flashy laser lights like you did in the SAO arc and everywhere else in the show. You can actually track where the blades are going. The column of 4 images on the right are Yuuki's 4 parries against the 4 separate thrusts of Quadruple Pain.
I honestly don't get where the praise for SAO's animation comes from because while it's hardly Konosuba-bad, it's not remarkably good, on the whole.

If they were fighting in the real world, I'd give you this point.
But they;re not. They're fighting in a virtual world, made up of calculations and code. It is impossible, absolutely impossible, for him to be able to guess what the computer is going to do before it calculates it itself, and especially considering that he's facing human characters and doing it in real time. He can't just overclock himself while the computer retains its normal use.

>An enemy like the one in ALO is far better than an enemy like the one in SAO - at the very least, you can discern that he's evil, that he has no morals, that he has control, etc.
Not necessarily; an ambiguous villain tends to be more compelling than a straight-up evil one. Plus, Kayaba's stepping back enabled more-varied and interesting conflicts in Aincrad's story arcs than in ALO. It was as much "man vs nature" as "man vs man"; how people adapted to the world and its rules, struggled for survival, cheated their fellows, coped with death, etc. Which was exactly what Kayaba wanted out of his world.
And sure, Kirito developed. He started out socially awkward, went through a loner period after the first boss fight, got even worse after Sachi's guild, then gradually made new friends (read: harem members) and got better-adjusted. He killed people, tried to repress the trauma, but eventually came to grips with it, and helped Sinon overcome hers. (On that note, Sinon herself is one of the bigger examples of character development.)
Asuna went from a grim loner to a guild leader, and went from seeing the world as an obstacle to appreciating its finer parts, as well as learning to love NPCs. And then there was Mother's Rosario.

If the computer is deterministic then you very much can predict it's action before it calculates it's action.
For example if you know that once the HP hits 50% it will dodge back and try to heal, before you hit it and push it past that 50% you can anticipate the dodge back even if the computer hasn't decided to dodge back yet.
Expand that to a year of fighting against algorithms and you have a semi plausible way to predict a potentially random set of reactions from a computer.

It's when he says that he was testing her and felt that she was something different/special. And then he just kind of gives up and lets Asuna deal with things. IIRC it's the reason he says he didn't use all of his skill in the fight. The whole thing was a test.

I go invisible to PCs and an invisible work station pops into the game world because I haven't figured out how to directly interface with a computer and control it by thought so I will make a fake computer to use. Here's a small smorgasbord of the worst parts of S1's animation offenses. The top image is what I referred to as "flashy laser light show", i.e. a sword skill. The lead-up to it are three superimposed frames (done in 2's) with a lot of blur and flashy effects. The middle image is actually a slow pan over a still with moving sparkly red shard effects for a good 2-3 seconds. The bottom image is a slow pan over a (mostly) still with more sparkly red effects and speedlines. I think the ends of Klein's hair and hachimaki were the only things moving.

The show is about making people fight to the death in a VR world that has no rules other than some game mechanics. Having only a single rape and no prostitution is strange given that the game has built in sexual functionality.

There are various aspects in the series that seems to indicate they have figured out the neurology to actually decode your thoughts accurately. Sword Skills required pre-programmed movements, ALO magic is done by chant, many abilities require the use of the menu, and so on.

Thinking a word, and saying a word are completely different.
Especially seeing as "saying" a word sends the signals to your mouth and throat to move in a certain way. The Seed just simulates the type of sound you should have from the way your mouth and throat would move.
No, the console isn't a requirement of the game. ALO's admin commands are spoken, for example. But saying "Why doesn't he just think the words" is silly, because "Thinking" a word is not anything like saying it. People think words they don't mean to all the time.
If we went with your stupid idea, a random player could tell an admin a string of commands, and the admin might accidentally think those words (because Welcome to how the mind works!)

What can it do that even implies it can properly do thinking commands?
Thought Commands would have to work in a way that's usually not "normal" to think, just to avoid accidents. The difference between "thinking" something, and "doing" it are built into our brain, but "thinking" a command and "activating" it would require a new way of thinking.
The NerveGear and Amusphere haven't really shown being able to do anything more complex than intercepting messages sent through the spinal-cord. The novels even point out how many of the sensations you feel in-game are artificial. Feeling wind or other fluids isn't realistic, and almost every command in the game requires a physical movement.
This is the setting. They have researched physical sensations, but haven't cracked how "thinking" and memories work. The NerveGear at least seems to have the hardware to interface with your subconscious (as Sugou in the 2nd arc was researching this), but without the software to actually decode any meaning, all this does is "future-proof" the device.

The first arc is good though? How stupid do you have to be to not enjoy those first 10 or so episodes? And honestly, unless youre interacting with normalfags on a daily basis, not many people think SAO is actually some amazing anime.
I didn´t even watch SAO or ALO because I read the spoilers about that in /a/ and thought "fuck this shitty anime".
Instead, because I like shooters and FPS games, I went in and watched GGO.
I never fully understood what a Gary Stu is and how cancerous it is to a story until then. Pic related was my face as I kept going from disappointment to disappointment as Kirito´s direct involvement with the situation continued to destroy any potential that situation could have possibly had.
The anime props Shinon up as a character worth following in a unique setting, then Kirito comes in, sidelines her and railroads the story into a specific event. Any difficulty the unique mechanics in GGO had were promptly averted by Kirito coming in, his intervention taking precedence over the basic need to develop the world meant no chance to develop it, and him buying a joke weapon and spazzing around with it ridiculed the videogame and everyone playing in it.
And that´s bad enough, but then we get the real world shit going on. Like the government asking this fucking asshole to conduct an investigation into what for all they know is a repeat of a mass murder, with basically no fucking supervision or protection. Or him intervening in the final fight in Shinon´s apartment against the crazy kid. The moment I saw she couldn´t even open the fucking latch on her door to escape was the moment I realized just how much a Gary Stu/Mary Sue can ruin a story, by ruining all the characters in it. The fact that she later saves Kirito by smashing the guy´s head in with a heavy object only served to twist the knife, because if she had time to try and run away, she might as well have done that from the start instead of giving Kirito a chance to come in and save the day.
Fuck SAO and fuck its fans. The whole series and its premise is a load of shit.
Also, "you die in the game, you die in real life" is an awful crutch that only pre-teen mongoloids fall for.

>it's just boring to see one of the main characters turn into a damsel in distress
What the fuck are you even talking about? Rescue arcs are one of the most basic tropes found in shounen action/adventure manga. Hell, Bleach alternated between training arcs and rescue arcs every single time. Did you call Rukia's rescue arc boring?

>It wasn't a joke weapon, it was clearly put there as an option for those who don't want to deal with the RNG of the shooting system and had prior experience with melee VR games (which is a pretty big thing in this universe).
First of all: source?
Second: that doesn´t make any damn sense. There are plenty of options for using guns while trying to avoid the RNG, like using shotguns or submachineguns for close quarters combat instead of being the dumbfuck that brought a knife to a gunfight. And if you really, really wanted to do that, you could get a bayonet and put it on a gun so you have BOTH a gun AND a knife.
The only reason the lightsaber works at all, is that it is fucking Jesus H. Kirito using it, and he has pretty much the highest known agi/speed/reflexes stats in the series.
Also, God fucking damnit. You just made me realize that if Kirito used a rifle with a bayonet at the end, the fights would be sick as fuck instead of the bullshit, low-budget Star Wars copycat they are.

>>155392548
What's Rosario again?
Asuna was such a boring and bland heroine, she personally ruined Ordinal Scale for me because I could not give two shits about her relationship with Kirito. Even though she was a much better character in Progressive, none of that translated over to her on-screen iteration in my head because they were almost two different people.
In fact, the only SAO heroines with anything resembling a character are Sinon, Suguha, and Eugeo. Maybe Alice. Yuuki if you stretch the definition of "heroine". Any time Sinon was on screen was the best part of Ordinal Scale.
>>155392652
The best part of Ordinal Scale was the few seconds before the movie started.

>Even a semblance of character development (for Suguha - at least, until the end when she relapses)
You've just dismissed your own argument. Same for Asuna, she's built up as a strong equal for Kirito in S1 only to become a helpless maiden in S2. I'm half starting to think she was shoved out of the way so Kirito could build up his harem.
>An actual enemy to hate
Because killing 4000 isn't bad enough, right? That's the single most offensive part about SAO to me, the finale to S2 is so bad it directly offends me: Kirito goes out of his way to positively compare a MASS MURDERER to a guy who groped his girlfriend in a digital simulation.
The Aincrad arc wasn't brilliant, but it started out strong and was far better than ALO or anything else that came after it. I still can't believe this shit is somehow more popular than Accel World, which is basically SAO but with all the major complaints everyone has with it solved.

She isn't built up, though - we barely ever see her do anything important, and nothing that Kirito himself can't do. Everyone talks about her being so good, but it's a show-don't-tell problem.
This makes her later uselessness and the drop-out-of-focus-to-build-the-harem moments all the more noticeable.

Monster re-spawns are just slow, meaning that if a large number of players are farming the same area there won't be enough EXP to go around. You even see monsters respawning in the same episode this line is said. It's just an intentional mis-interpretation—not a plot hole.
>Everyone hates beta-testers
It's only really a small number who really hated them tho, and only because they wanted a scapegoat for all their problems.
Vocal minorities aren't anything new.
>That one retard
Anime fucked that up. In the LN, Kirito and him barely have enough time to look at each other and exchange half-a-sentence before he bursts. Seeing as the anime completely avoided sharing any character's inner thoughts, they decided to have the two exchange a long conversation before he died, because otherwise the viewer wouldn't have realized he was a beta-tester. (It also doesn't help the anime cut out the other subplot from that episode that eventually built up into the reveal that he's a beta tester)

I don't understand how anyone can see it differently.Good to know some people still have good taste
>>155376221
There are many reasons I hate SAO. But Kirito's shit taste in women is by far the biggest reason.
In the first cour the idea is novel, there's some early unexpected death to add some weight to things and Kirito has a reason to be better than everyone else, even if he should have probably fallen behind during his mopey period, but hey, let's assume he's gifted. The cute happy family time episodes were kind of novel, too, and game the viewer a reason to give a shit. It loses points for I WILL POWERED THROUGH THE GAME MECHANICS and for ending so abruptly though.
Meanwhile in cour 2, Kirito goes full fucking self insert fan fiction character without reserve. He can beat people at Kendo even while recovering from the hospital because he played a video game, he learns how to do shit that should take months in a matter of seconds because ????, and every single female he meets wants to squirrel him away inside her vagina the second she sees him. Add to this the HAX bullshit he gets and the fact that no one could climb the tree until he got there and they all followed him because I dunno, HE REALLY WANTED TO YOU GUYS and they all wanted his D. Also Asuna gets zero screen time if it's not being tentacle raped.
It completely removes even the slightest sense of tension because of COURSE Kirito is going to win, he's DA BEST AT EVERYTHING the moment he tries it because his dick is just sooooooooooo big!
They do salvage this somewhat with the last episode, where the tension actually returns and which is handled pretty damn well.
I liked staring at Tits McStepsister as much as the next guy but that's not enough to save it.

I actually thought it was pretty good to be honest, the animation was great and the story was better than the other arcs, though it did get a bit cheesy at times.

Most anime in general is pretty bad narratively speaking because of a few factors.
>marketing dynamic between the TV stations, Manga, and the advertisers
>writing is shit in japan for the most part largely due to cultural repression
>west misunderstands what most anime is. It is a foil and a cultural pallet through which the repressed youth expresses itself. which anime and which particular episodes you say you like to your peers reveals in a "down low" way what you are feeling and thinking.
>anime/manga is structured to be fairly simple and vapid foils, like simple monosyllabic words meant for simple communication to others within social circles. Complexity or even nuance of story would make them horrible for their core use.
>>155410396
>It completely removes even the slightest sense of tension because of COURSE Kirito is going to win, he's DA BEST AT EVERYTHING the moment he tries it because his dick is just sooooooooooo big!
Thing is, I felt this way all through the SAO arc too. There was never a point at which I feared that Kirito might lose, or if he lost, that it'd actually matter in the end. And I was right - as you said, he will powered through the game mechanics.

For someone who doesn't hate beta players he sure goes out of his way to accuse them of everything under the sun even in subsequent volumes of Progressive.
Incidentally it's absolutely criminal that Kizmel and Argo have no pillow talk scenes in Hollow Realization.
>>155416607
Kibaou is clearly playing a role, just as Kirito is playing the role of "scapegoat".
Progressive basically makes Kibaou and Lind the tard wranglers of their respective proto-guilds. They see what's going on and think it's a bunch of bullshit, but given their positions, they have to play their roles and play to their audience in order to effectively wrangle the retards in their guilds.

Author apologizes for this a lot, but he reasons it as SAO's arcs and side-stories being similar to how detective books have a single protagonist, and each successive episode has a new cast for the protagonist to interact with.
The reason they're all girls is because he (self-admittedly) couldn't write stories any other way, due to his lack of writing skill.

>>155396679
I think my real problem in hindsight is that the female characters are mostly cheerleaders and eyecandy, and the two exceptions to Kirito's harem are Sinon and Yuuki - the former having the eyecandy part but thankfully being enough of a character on her own, and the latter meeting Kirito a grand total of once without much mattering and then dying of AIDs anyway so she only matters to Asuna.
It just kinda feels cheap.
Ordinal scale was pure kino.

Author doesn't seem to mind all that much.
He went ahead and continued that, releasing "16.6" all the way into "16.9" as doujinshi. He packaged the 16.x stories as a bonus side-story with one of the BDs (although he renamed it "Sugary Days"), and is still releasing "Sugary Days" chapters at COMITIA.

Mother Rosario was complete garbage anon. All the bullshit with cancer girl and Asuna with her mother was entirely unbelievable and unengaging.
"Yeah sure I'll just talk to my daughter inside a VR game instead of like a normal person, I've accepted she's completely autistic by this point so I might as well throw her a bone"
"It's a good thing this videogame has a fucking truth serum built into it with not allowing you to filter your emotions, that's the main reason my daughter brought me here, essentially drugging me but I'll let that go and now bond because wow this looks like my old cabin"
"This terminally ill patient can't even move and gave me her last request to let her die in the real world"
"Nuh uh Doctor, I'm her best friend who met her literally last week, put that helmet back on her right now and violate the promise you made to a girl on her deathbed for no reason"
"Well when you put it like that"
And then they were totally the right decision because Asuna can do no wrong and the friend totally actually changed her mind and wanted to see SAO as she died, and literally everyone in the game showed up to watch this girl they barely even know die because I mean hey, not often you watch someone die right in front of you I guess.
>>155425809
You missed the part where the hospital probably took whatever passes for HIPAA in Japan and threw it out the window by just letting Asuna walk in the door with no ID, took her to see Yuuki, then disclosed her whole life story while the patient was in another room.

Sounds like an obvious translation error you're trying to claim is canon. LN just has the doctor hesitate about what he THINKS she would want.
> literally everyone in the game showed up to watch this girl they barely even know die
There have in fact been various in-game funerals for well known MMO players. Not in the same way this happened, but so what?

>>155426126
The hospital staff recognized her name because the patient had already given her express permission to let Asuna know everything because she figured she'd try to come find her.
>>155426269
It's been what 3 years since the show came out? Give me a break she had some terminal disease, maybe it was AIDS I forget which.
Listening to your kids is one thing but almost no sane parent would not think something is majorly up with thei kid if they can't fucking speak to them and need to do it on a computer. I'm surprised she didn't get her tested right after that.
>shit that didn't happen
It removed your capability to filter emotions, I'm paraphrasing, deal with it
LN might have said something else but the doctor specifically said in the anime that the patient didn't want to die online Whether this was simply told to him by her earlier, or on her deathbed I don't recall but it was told to him, and even if it wasn't some literal fucking who who isn't family and met her just the other day should have no fucking say in that whatsoever.
A funeral is one thing, saying some nice things and remembering them is one thing, saying "Hey come show up to watch this girl die live" is pretty fucking weird

>It removed your capability to filter emotions, I'm paraphrasing, deal with it
All they did was make it so that if you feel sad or mournful, it makes your avatar leak tears. It didn't remove the capacity to filter emotions; they just never added the capacity to control your simulated tear glands.
>but the doctor specifically said
And again, that sounds like a translation mistake. The dub also words the doctor's lines in a speculative manner, instead of him outright saying "that's what she wants".
In any case, if it turned out Yuuki wanted to spend her last moments IRL, she could easily just log out of the machine of her own will. It's honestly kinda strange you would think a person as up-beat as Yuuki but unable to move, would want to spend her last moments in a hospital bed, and for some reason not want to be inside the world she just spent a lot of time having fun and making lots of friends.
>Hey come show up to watch this girl die live
It's not like dying in real life while in game would look particularly gorey or anything. The damn thing would probably log her out by the time she loses consciousness, and all they'll really see is her fading out like a regular log out animation.
You say it's weird, but plenty of people visit those on their death bed they know to wish them goodbye in their last moments.
>>155426269
>Various in-game funerals for well known MMO players
It's always extra painful when those happen.
>>155426758
Most of them were dying of cancer, I think. Only Yuuki and her (dead) sister had AIDS.
The prevalence of super AIDS will depend on the population's adherence to HAART. I've treated people who have I guess what you can consider super AIDS (or at least super HIV), and it's not a matter of their own incompliance but, rather, they got infected with a strain that had a bunch of resistances already. Those resistances are accumulated through time, through different patients. So gg to them.
How high on morphine was Yuuki when she died? It's the only way her death could have had anything approaching dignity after all.
>>155426866
No it was definitely removed because characters have held back on that type of shit since the start of the show. Which is an odd fucking decision to make and just made the whole already slightly autistic scene get that much more outlandish. It was absurdism thrown into the climax of a character arc and it seemed like the author had written himself into a corner and couldn't help but ham fist the development instead of trying to make it plausible. Even just having a spoken appeal to emotion would have worked miles better than that.
It's not about what I think she would want, it's about the characters around Asuna just bending to her will despite it making no sense to do so because it's clear that whatever Asuna wants must be the right thing to do.
Yes people visit others on their deathbed, but they don't do it online or in videogames. Can you imagine someone live streaming themselves as they pass away and how fucking eerie that would be? It's one thing to visit your sick granparents and get upset at their passing or a friend or what have you, it's an emotional time, but largely because of your connection with them, sitting there and watching someone's avatar with the knowledge that the person on the other end is dead is a weird thing to invite people to come watch.

SAO was good nerd and Kirito and Asuna are some of the most popular characters in anime right now. The fact is it got too popular for you nerds and that's why you're all sour about it now because I guarantee when it was airing I didn't see 99% of you idiots in these threads.
>>155427120
I think that was Kawahara's point, it was part of the theme of the bleeding of virtual reality into reality. Yuuki's virtual body had become reality for her after spending years almost exclusively in VR.
>>155427187
Please don't false flag. It's rude.

>whatever Asuna wants must be the right thing to do.
Kinda moving the goal post here, but OK.
>but they don't do it online or in videogames
And why wouldn't they if you have FullDive, and the person in question has spent the last three years of their life going from one video game to the next? To her, like most of the case, the virtual world is no different from the real world anyways (as is the theme of SAO)
In either case, Yuuki's entire wish the whole arc was to leave her mark on the world and not be forgotten (as they repeated several times). Having an audience of people see her off, and remind her she wouldn't be forgotten was the whole reason for that.
>>155427386
No, it is precisely because I have read far too much into this series that I can be so put off by its glaring faults. Don't pretend they don't exist either, Reki admits them and so should you.

To be fair, GGO did have Sinon dragging it down, she was ok normally but having her trauma presented alongside Kirito's legitimate PTSD (which was an interesting thing to do with the series I thought) really cheapened her character
>>155428049
No.
>>155427655
>Also safe sex, drug rehab, clean needles, health insurance availability, etc
Well, yes, though those things affect the prevalence of HIV overall and have less to do with the development of multidrug-resistance specifically. It's easy for a virus to develop a resistance to one drug. That's why people continued to die of HIV/AIDS when the treatment was just a 1-2 drug cocktail. That's why modern HAART uses 3-4 drugs - it's much, much harder for a virus to develop concurrent resistances to 3-4 drugs (supposing that the patient is compliant). However, nasty strains still exist out there where entire classes of good medication are knocked out.And it was a service where we were the primary team on and managed all HIV+ patients in the hospital, most of which were there for medical reasons like a vanilla acute infection of some sort, drug complication, or AIDS-defining illness, especially in the case of those new-diagnosis cases. A lot of HIV management really centers around outpatient care, though, and we also took turns rotating through that clinic.
>>155428083
I dunno. Killing someone when you're a kid seems like a legit reason to get PTSD, especially when all your peers around you are being little shits about it.
>>155428167
The difference I thought was that she did it to save people and it was an accident anyways since she just grabbed it and then the other guy basically pulled it, vs someone who took a sword and murdered someone with their own two hands in a desperate situation to save themselves. Not to mention that being bullied for being a murderer seems like the oddest thing to be bullied over, comparing that to what seemed more of a genuine situation to have it in made it feel slightly trivialized.
>>155428330
Rationalization and context only works so far. Even soldiers who absolutely did the right thing come back with PTSD. The mind works in strange ways.
>Not to mention that being bullied for being a murderer seems like the oddest thing to be bullied over
That's just because kids and many adults are shits.
>>155428083
As I recall Shino was actually diagnosed with PTSD by a psychiatrist, which is more than can be said for Kirito.
Yeah, the SAO survivors probably had access to mental health services, but I don't remember any of the cast actually having to see any of them.
>>155428584
It's true that it only works so far, and on it's own it might have still worked I was only pointing out that having her next to a situation in which those factors did not exist it felt cheaper. It's more the presentation that was the issue.
>>155427657
No, I pick on this series because there are serious problems with a lot of things. Granted, many of these problems are self-imposed due to the abysmal adaptation, but they are still problems. That really can't be helped however, it's just the fault of being an animated medium as opposed to a print one.
Now granted, there are a lot of things the anime did very right, even in the God-awful GGO arc. As expected of the resident Dengeki Bunko gun-nut, Sigsawa did a nice job with weapon diversity throughout the arc. The inclusion of a native English speaker for a scene as trivial as Kirito's agility performance was a very wise one, and gave the scene altogether a character that was utterly missing in the LN. Abec's character designs remained superb, Kirito's Excalibur and Mother's Rosario outfit for ALO is easily the best looking outfit he gets in the series.
There are indeed very big problems though. Take this gem of a scene here. Take the completely unnecessary (Or at the very least 'painfully overt', as it is a rather nice ass) attention for Sinon's ass throughout the arc. Take THE THREE CONSECUTIVE EPISODES SPENT IN A CAVE. The worst problem of all was that GGO as a whole was wasted potential. You can tell that its wasted because Sigsawa took the world of GGO and turned it into solid gold, with better understanding of GGO mechanics, use of said mechanics, development of characters, moe-factor, and generally far more enticing story. It could just be Sigsawa's inner gun-nut, but Alternative volume 1 was better than phantom bullet on every level. Phantom bullet very well could have been better than even volume 14 of the LN, and with as much flak as he gets, if the plot followed some of Digibro's suggestions for handling certain situations the arc would have been the best by far.
Now I could rant about how angry GGO made me as a result of its seeming lack of effort but that would get me nowhere. SAO shines best when it tells the world rather than the story.

Hmm, yes, the other guy doubletapped himself then blew his own face out.
Oh wait no, that's retarded. Reread that part in volume 5.
The first shot, to the gut, was pulled by Sinon on reflex as the guy tried to wrestle the gun away, this caused him to lose his grip and clutch his abdomen.
The second shot which went through his chest was in the heat of the moment as he tried to grab her again.
The third time, the man was lying on the floor and trying to get up, then Shino walked forward towards him and put a bullet in his face execution-style.
