there are some people that come across my translations but not alot.
When it comes to translating,it depends on how it was initially translated from Japanese to English. Fan-translations offer direct translations of the Japanese counterpart but the official American translations are so censored and filled with "American Humor" that they sounds like shit when you translate them in another language.
If i do come across an officially translated manga that wasn't fan-translated yet (for example Attack On Titan Junior High),then i try my best to make it somehow enjoyable.

The Bulgarian anon here, it's not entirely impossible to do a decent translation from an already translated manga/anime - I did a similar translation for a certain private tracker once, but it really helps if you know at least some Japanese. You're not required to know it as much as the professional translators, but knowing SOME Japanese helps; merely translating a translation is awful, and a lot of subtlety can be lost. Sorry, romanian anon, but that's not really the way to do things.
But you'll not listen, will you.
In that case, you'll at least need a decent vocabulary in both your language, and English, in order to do a localisation - for example, monkey paws. You might, or might not have such a thing in your language. But you might have similar wish-granting devices that grant wishes, but with a price, in your folklore. It would sound strange if you did a literal translation of a translation - the Jap>English translators are already changing and localising things so they sound right for English speakers.

Also, don't just directly and mechanically translate stuff in Aegisub; watch the anime and think about whether you could improve your subs. For example, comedic effect - you might have to change the timings so it would work.
If you want to do speedsubs, that's one thing, but if you want to do decent subs that are worth archiving, you do need to be more mindful of the way you're doing translations. I constantly see literal translations of movies and foreign TV shows on the airwaves, and I want to fucking beat up the people who approved them, since they are full of literal translations instead of localisations for certain sayings. I may understand what they meant, but the normal viewer would go "huh?" when he hears that. There goes their immersion; something the directors and the producers were striving to do well. Ruined because of shitty subtitles.

There are some things that just don't work when directly translated. I do not refer to the 4kids level of localisation, where Onigiri were called "jelly doughnuts".
It's just that I don't like literal translations, such as "bread and butter", when a similar phrase exists.

Another example ; "to have a finger in every pie". This would sound really fucking weird if you translated it literally. Yes, it would make sense if you thought a little about it, but wouldn't it be better if you used an existing, similar phrase from the language you're translating into? In Bulgarian, you could use "на всяка манджа мерудия" to refer to the same thing - to somebody who loves to get involved with everything (almost always unwanted). It would strike the same chord the original (and the English translation) hit.

He's not referring to that, faggot. You can make any font look bearable if you you use anti-aliasing. Don't edit your manga with MS Paint, use something good like Photoshop, or at least, GIMP.
