You don't have to. It just gives a little insight into what the character is thinking using little excerpts from the light novels. But you don't need to know that. I say "the character" because it's not just araragi narrating (I.e. Nekomonogatari Shiro has hanekawa narrating and thus uses light novel excerpts where she is narrating).

I only read what I can in the split second it shows the screen. If I missed it I move on

i mostly do this too. i figure if they actually wanted you to read it instead of just pulling some words out in that second for a general feeling, they'd keep it up longer.
