how about this: it's a slice-of-life anime set in a Ghost in the Shell-style cyberpunk society, but instead of focusing on some elite paramilitary unit, our protagonist is a kissless loser who hangs out with his hapless friends and occasionally does cool stuff. The overarching plot could be his goal to save enough money to buy himself a Desert Eagle and a gynoid robo-waifu; working towards this goal sometimes gets him and his buddies in deep shit as he takes less-than-legal routes to get money rather than actually work for it.

Sure, it can become old. Not saying it'll disappear, but it'll become less popular. For example, back in the late 90s, the fad was Eva clones/philosophical DEEP/convoluted/FREUD shit, because Eva was huge and changed a lot of shit. Other stuff was already going in Eva's direction like GITS which also released in 1995, but you get the idea. So, for the next 10 years or so, we got all this DEEP shit out the ass, which isn't to say it was bad, but that's the template that impressed itself on the anime industry and audience.

Then around 2001, Azumanga Daioh came around. It wasn't HUGE, but it was pretty big and years later we started getting more SoLs. In 2007, we get Lucky Star and a huge wave of SoL shows around this time. Then THAT became the predominate template.

I dunno what, if any, template there is now, but that's the impressive I've gotten.
