What is the best individual sequence of animation you've ever seen?
>>
Has to be from Disney.
>>
>>155168061
>>
>>155168132
I hope you're thinking of something pre-80's Disney.
>>
>>155168061
Probably the part in Redline when the race clashes with the thug war or whatever.

The amount of shit that was going on in a single frame combined with how fluid it was is still impressive to this day.
>>
>>155168132

Was thinking more in terms of Anime but you could make a strong argument that Disney objectively has the best.

I think Belle finding the rose is my personal favorite.
>>
Just by sheer technical excellence alone, The Thief and The Cobbler has some mind-boggling scenes. 30s and 40s Disney has some great stuff too like Pinocchio's whale chase or Bill Tytla's animation in Dumbo.

As for anime, some of my favourites are Toshiyuki Inoue's riot scene in Jin-Roh, Hiroyuki Okiura's work in Magnetic Rose, Shinya Ohira in The Animatrix, Norio Matsumoto's action in Naruto 133, and Yutaka Nakamura's Sword of the Stranger finale.

Then there's Yoshinori Kanada's iconic Kanada Dragon and Toshiaki Hontani's insane effects animation in Akira.

Has there ever been an anime that was as mentally stimulating as Hyouka?

/thread
>>
>>155168923
nope, it's perfect
>>
>>155168923
I just thought it was comfy.
People always make fun of Hyouka for being pseudo intellectual but I just liked it because of how laid back it felt.
>>
Maybe something from Akira? The animal fight in Hakujaden? Or the Orochi fight at the end of Wanpaku Ouji?
I dunno, it's a hard question, I just want to pick scenes I like for other reasons, which are also well-animated.
>>
Other anons have given out most of what I would say so I won't repeat.

There is this one sequence I've been trying to find though. It has a girl laughing in front of a raging fire until she cries and collapses. Don't know where it was from.

Honestly, early on in Macross, there's a scene where Minmay falls through the sky, and is caught mid-air by the protagonist leaning out of his cockpit. The first time I saw the scene, I was in awe by such an old show having such fluid animation for a scene that couldn't have been modeled irl (unlike, say, Disney).

Not the greatest, but the most memorable to me.

K-On! is awesome. I know a lot of folks prefer Nichijou and Hyouka when it comes to Kyoani animation, but K-On! had a much softer and looser, more cartoony approach (thank you Horiguchi) which I really appreciate.

It's like you have to turn off your brain everytime the dialogue kicks in.

>for being pseudo intellectual
Triggers me so fucking hard.

I just ignore Hyouka threads now, even though I enjoyed the show a lot. They're all just baiting back and forth for the duration. Idiots on one side saying the show was a flawless masterpiece, idiots on the other saying it's the most boring piece of trash ever created. The reality, of course, is that's it's a really good but not quite great show whose subject matter will appeal to some but not others.

One thing it is definitely NOT however is attempting to be any kind of pseudo-intellectual. The closest you can get to intellectual is calling it literary genre fiction animated for the screen, but lightened up even with highschool romance hijinks. Actual mystery novels aren't considered highly intellectual at all, why should Hyouka be when it's so far removed from actual mysteries? Just because the MC has some kind of half-brained philosophy on life doesn't make the show philosophical or something. Just because it's smart(er than the average highschool romance show) doesn't make it intellectual.

Sorry, Hyouka threads have ruined me.

>>155168830
This, anybody who considers themselves a fan of animation at all needs to have seen (and ideally read a bit about the history of the production of for context around) The Thief and The Cobbler.
>>
>>155172901
It's considered pseudo-intellectual (by some) more for non-narrative reasons, like cinematography and animation quality. In the anime community things like that lure in elitists more so than some kind of philosophical insight.
>>
>>155173082
>being good makes it intellectual
Shit like this is why I hide my power level.
>>
>>155173497
I think when stuff like accusations of pseudo-intellectualism arise, people are talking more about the fans than the show.
>>
>>155173597
Well that's certainly true of Hyouka, at least on /a/.

Love this scene so much. Such a sick rendition of that song. K-On! is better than we deserve.
>>
>>155174331
The way that she hums along so quietly that you might not even notice it until rewatching for a second or third time gives my heart a boner.
