I only watched the anime. The setup for the plot is fucking dumb. A retarded chuuni somehow builds a magic timetelegraphing microwave (muh powerful EM waves) and a fat otaku effortlessly hacks the SERN which creates black holes that kill humans deddo. They are joined by a hot 18-year-old physics genius, and a major figure in all the conspiracy fluff just happens to live downstairs. Granted, it's probably impossible to write an interesting and consistent plot involving timetravel, but in S;G the setup just feels like a joke.
The timetravel mechanics are kept just vague enough that the writer can do whatever and the aspergic subset of the fanbase can let their imagination run wild in making excuses for all the seeming plotholes/inconsistencies. "Oh, it actually makes perfect sense, let me explain it to you citing a myriad of weakly founded speculation". Shitty SF is what it is.

A show can have intense pandering even if it never shoves tits or ass in the viewer's face. The loser male MCs save the world while surrounded by a cast of very hot girls, all with character traits chosen for maximum otaku appeal. How delightful! Maybe wish fulfilment or self-insert bait would have been more accurate descriptions, but pandering definitely works too.
