In the original game, the antagonist says that a certain incident caused the world to go into despair and turn to absolute shit. The scene you just watched happened prior to that, but the school those kids go to tried to sweep that scene under the rug.

The antagonist who caused that scene also leaked it to the rest of the student body. That, and the help of some literal mind hacks (I wish I was making this shit up), caused a mass suicide with the majority of the other students. That suicide caused the rest of the world to go downhill.

The writing is terrible, but threads while it was airing was worth it.

In all fairness, the series was never known for its superb story telling, but rather it's interesting and crazy murder mystery.

The scene in OP's link is a prequel made last year when the first game came out in 2010 and they were vague on the detail in the original. They probably just dug themselves into a hole trying to explain shit.
