What do people see in this guy's works? I've tried time and time again to watch a movie or series of his and they're all just like extremely bad. Like zero redeeming qualities and this isn't an exaggeration. And this is ignoring the fact that I'm watching something expensive.

anyone remember Katsuhiro Otomo? after Akira he never did anything else that was worth while. but, he had one manga/anime that was mind blowing in 1988 and that was that. Hayao Miyazaki on the other hand has so many hits amoung the japs and non-japs that he became of kind of spitful god that now hates anime culture. So, while he created amazing stories which engauge people in their childlike fantisies.. he realized he himself should have killed it or himself long ago. So, is his work amazing? Ehh, some of it is ok.. but, it seems like anything now is utter trash.

They took jobs that treat them like human beings, don't require them to do brain-dead things, you do realize there's no one hiring for 1 billion animators right? Just because you're able to do something doesn't mean you'll get paid for it or that it isn't a brain dead job.
You really need to learn how the economy works before you open your mouth
>>
His movies are pretty good. Also very attractive.

But I guess part of their appeal is the fact that westerners are always squeamish about anime since it's nothing but titties and violence, which America openly condemns, while secretly enjoying it. It might also have to do with animation in general being seen as a childish affair that can't tell a serious story with likable and deep characters, so Miyazaki's movies are seen as "socially acceptable" in normalfag eyes. The only way you can garner their attention is through CGI and big name stars.

Nah Spielberg is a fag. Miyazaki has actually done good for the industry
>>
>>155121697
I don't need to be able to write good characters myself in order to point out when a shallow character appears on screen.
>>
>>155116586
Everything he did in animation was done hand-drawn, he made colorful, huge worlds with no CGI at all, and did perfect, fluid animation without the Disney-type stuff like mushing the characters. Sprinkle what could be seen as no romantic subtext with young girls as lead roles and you got yourself movies that even critics can admire for not trying to be Disney movies.

It all really has to do with timing.

Also, he was a pedophile, that really didn't help him, i just like to remind people.

People who say "they don't feel like anime" are those with a limited knowledge of what anime is, I think. Miyazaki has been doing this since 1963, and if you compare his works then to their contemporaries, they're not out of the ordinary. Anime is a fairly incestuous industry, so when something completely uninspired by and ignorant of modern trends comes out, like Wind Rises for example, it feels different. And that's a great thing, in my opinion.
>>
>>155121853
Tarzan and Alice in wonderland are drawn, more beautifully than Miyazaki could ever hope to achieve.

People are eager to lump things together, since it's hard to take time and analyze them all individually and compare drastically different stories and settings, trying to determine which ones are superior, and ultimately judging each film for its merits and concepts. Seeing as how they aren't identical and even based on other stories, it's up to the viewer to come up with a consensus. Everyone gravitates towards different films after all.

I'm bored and want to see if there's an actual thought-process and how much of this is based on actual opinions and how much of it is just boredom. Never watched K-On so i don't know how it distinguishes itself from other CGDCT shows, and the usage of Akita and Cowboy Bebop in the same grouping makes it hard to say. Though I am not personally a fan of all Miyazaki films, I can enjoy them for their visuals and varying tone, so I'm curious as to what a purely negative opinion consists of.

Common actual-arguments you'll see criticize the endings of his movies, or say they work on a scene-by-scene basis, but not as a whole film (don't get this one). Besides that, you'll get the usual stuff like, they're boring, or too different from modern anime. Some people disagree on an ideological level. Lots of folks like to buy into the negativity as a rejection of his popularity. Anime is losing it's status as a niche hobby, so dismissing what's popular is one way to remedy that.

The fact that I have no fucking idea who the other 3 guys are must mean you have an incredibly superior taste
>>
>>155123436
Which bad movies, exactly?
>>
>>155123100
If you're asking me, despite not having seen them all, I'd say his movies are pretty hit or miss due to being adaptations that follow pretty much the same pacing.
>setting that takes some time
>everyday hijinks/travel
>some characters appears and the story starts to take form
>HUGE sudden shift and a suddenly increased pacing because it was planned to end at a certain part of the original work and they took too much time with the first three parts
>as a result, characters (or mainly the MC) undergo too much change in very little time and they feel off
>the resolution of the sudden shift is half-assedly thrown in few minutes before the end, sometimes with mention of some random plot moments that never get brought back up again

For the worst contender of this, I'd point you towards Howl no Ugoku Shiro, or even Kurenai no Buta. Mimi wo Sumaseba didn't even know what it was trying to do, I believe.
That said, he also hit the mark with works like Laputa, Mononoke Hime, Majo no Takkyubin. Nausicäa is also pretty nice.
>>
>>155123591
All of them. Are you not following the thread?
>>
>>155123597
What you're saying is none of his movies are worth watching because they're not memorable for they're all the same?
>>
>>155123597
>Mimi wo Sumaseba
He didn't even direct that. Also
>Kurenai no Buta
Porco Rosso is literally his magnum opus.
>>

There are segments that feel forced or poorly implemented.
The romance in TWR was introduced far too late in and by the end you wonder why it was even in the film at all.

The villain in Ponyo didn't even need to be there, the entire film was fine being just about the kid bonding with the fish-person or whatever.

Howl's Moving Castle is a convoluted mess obviously but I think it's more to do with the fact that it was an adaptation of an English novel.

I like most of his work pre-Howl's apart from Kiki's Delivery Service, which felt kind of directionless imo.

What does /a/ think of this guy's work? Is he Miyazaki's true heir?
>>
>>155123658
Dude, I've literally said he did some pretty amazing works. He just follows a certain receipe which is a hit or miss depending on the movies and the elements they choose to bring on screen, and the time given to each element. Look for example, the part in Kurenai no Buta where the MC tells about his vision of the afterlife and the planes flying off into the "sky" while he survived. Okay, that's poetic and all, but it's being brought up just for atmosphere and never told about again during the rest of the movie whereas it played a pretty important role in the plot (I believe it was where the MC actually transformed).
It's this kind of things that may seem nice but it's nothing more than just trying to show off and therefore undermines the movies as a whole.

>>155123889
>I've literally said they're amazing but then I elaborate and it implies they're not so amazing after all
I hear ya dude. You're being watched and can only subtlety hint to the actual quality of his movies. I don't want you to lose your job.
>>
>>155123762
Kiki was just a coming of age story, and it did everything pretty brillantly if you ask me. It actually hits every sore spot about being thrown into the world and learning to live on your own. It also has the merit of having an actually satisfying ending, which is rare.
>>
>>155123888
His movies are pretty good compared to the anime standard, but he's nowhere near Miyazaki-good, in my opinion. I've enjoyed his stuff, though, and I'm looking forward to the new one.
>>
>>155123888
I know nothing about the guy but it's always so pretentious when they take pictures in front of their 'shelves'
>>
>>155124003
Stop reading what you want to read and perhaps you'll start being less of an idiot.

If you say two conflicting things I can't help but read what I want

I never said all his movies were good. You're just being an ass.

He didn't write that, though.
>>
>>155118723
Guess it's because he does storyboards too which make the scene transitions in the manga so fluid. Sadly no sequel movie ever.

He makes awesome movies but he's a pretentious piece of shit.
Ever since that one video of him insulting those guys project, I lost respect for him.
He's either senile or just a douchebag.

Very well.
I enjoyed many of the anime he had a role in creating.

Hey guys, OP here.

I was wrong about everything. Miyazaki is a godlike animator and important figure in the history of Japanese animation. This thread was a mistake. I'm a faggot who should just kill myself.

Thanks for reading.
