anyone remember Katsuhiro Otomo? after Akira he never did anything else that was worth while. but, he had one manga/anime that was mind blowing in 1988 and that was that. Hayao Miyazaki on the other hand has so many hits amoung the japs and non-japs that he became of kind of spitful god that now hates anime culture. So, while he created amazing stories which engauge people in their childlike fantisies.. he realized he himself should have killed it or himself long ago. So, is his work amazing? His movies are pretty good. Also very attractive.

But I guess part of their appeal is the fact that westerners are always squeamish about anime since it's nothing but titties and violence, which America openly condemns, while secretly enjoying it. It might also have to do with animation in general being seen as a childish affair that can't tell a serious story with likable and deep characters, so Miyazaki's movies are seen as "socially acceptable" in normalfag eyes. The only way you can garner their attention is through CGI and big name stars.

Everything he did in animation was done hand-drawn, he made colorful, huge worlds with no CGI at all, and did perfect, fluid animation without the Disney-type stuff like mushing the characters. Sprinkle what could be seen as no romantic subtext with young girls as lead roles and you got yourself movies that even critics can admire for not trying to be Disney movies.

People who say "they don't feel like anime" are those with a limited knowledge of what anime is, I think. Miyazaki has been doing this since 1963, and if you compare his works then to their contemporaries, they're not out of the ordinary. Anime is a fairly incestuous industry, so when something completely uninspired by and ignorant of modern trends comes out, like Wind Rises for example, it feels different. And that's a great thing, in my opinion.

Never watched K-On so i don't know how it distinguishes itself from other CGDCT shows, and the usage of Akita and Cowboy Bebop in the same grouping makes it hard to say. Common actual-arguments you'll see criticize the endings of his movies, or say they work on a scene-by-scene basis, but not as a whole film (don't get this one). Besides that, you'll get the usual stuff like, they're boring, or too different from modern anime. Some people disagree on an ideological level. If you're asking me, despite not having seen them all, I'd say his movies are pretty hit or miss due to being adaptations that follow pretty much the same pacing.

That said, he also hit the mark with works like Laputa, Mononoke Hime, Majo no Takkyubin. Nausicäa is also pretty nice.

There are segments that feel forced or poorly implemented.
The romance in TWR was introduced far too late in and by the end you wonder why it was even in the film at all.

The villain in Ponyo didn't even need to be there, the entire film was fine being just about the kid bonding with the fish-person or whatever.

Howl's Moving Castle is a convoluted mess obviously but I think it's more to do with the fact that it was an adaptation of an English novel.

I like most of his work pre-Howl's apart from Kiki's Delivery Service, which felt kind of directionless imo.

Dude, I've literally said he did some pretty amazing works. He just follows a certain receipe which is a hit or miss depending on the movies and the elements they choose to bring on screen, and the time given to each element. Look for example, the part in Kurenai no Buta where the MC tells about his vision of the afterlife and the planes flying off into the "sky" while he survived. Okay, that's poetic and all, but it's being brought up just for atmosphere and never told about again during the rest of the movie whereas it played a pretty important role in the plot (I believe it was where the MC actually transformed).
It's this kind of things that may seem nice but it's nothing more than just trying to show off and therefore undermines the movies as a whole.
