Not really, we did it on the Western front in an excessive fashion because both us and the French don't know the word moderation. The Eastern front was very wide and flat, digging holes in an huge organized fashion was/would have been terrible.
Also, good luck digging a bunch of trenches in the desert. The middle Eastern theater was very different.
Not to mention East Africa, which was essentially guerrilla warfare.
