Don't get me wrong. I fucking LOVE Alien Nine. But Alien Nine is more a sci-fi/Lovecraftian anime series then a "Magical Girl" series. it does not even have the tropes of a mahou shoujo series. If I could compare it to anything.... I dunno. Can I compare it to Persona or the likes? Maybe. But the aliens in it were more like something out of Spore.

Its got magical girls. Yes, they use the term witches, but I still consider it mahou shoujo since it focuses on young girls practising magic, and it has a few of the tropes of the genre. To be fair, the same is true for Mahoutsukai Sally/Sunny, which is generally considered the first magical girl series (though the main inspiration for Sunny was apparently Bewitched so that would make the first magical girl Samantha Stephens...?), and pretty much any other magical girl pre-Sailor Moon for that matter (there was Cutie Honey, but she's only considered a magical girl in retrospect).
That said, you can draw a fairly straight chain of influence from Sailor Moon that eventually leads back to Sunny, which is not really the case for LWA (having Harry Potter as its main influence). So in that sense, they're superficially similar but come from different places.

Princess Tutu basically defines what a shoujo mahou shoujo is. There are three main kinds of shoujo:

"Traditional" mahou shoujo with romance:
Sailor Moon - Princess Tutu - Shugo Chara

Seinen mahou shoujo:
Madoka - Nanoha - Alien Nine

Mahou shoujo with a friendship focus:

If you write up a trinity, you should have one of each.
