Please give me your honest thoughts on this nice series

Utena was 20 years ago.

Took me like 6 episodes to really get into it, I think it was around the gay teacher piano episode that I really got invested in the story.

Character designs still bother the shit out of me. Especially the red-haired/green-haired characters and the use of shading on their hair. It felt off.

That was Anno on Evangelion. Utena has shit like C-ko trying to make dinner with car tires. Eva takes it's symbolism seriously whereas Utena mixes anything genuine with a bunch of gags.

honestly I respect the series, but I always had difficulty with the pacing and the not-so-subtle implications.

Honestly, I didn't like the anime that much, it was so repetitive sometimes. I did laugh in Nanami's episodes but the ending was good.

But then I watched the movie and it's still one of my favorite movies, it really stuck with me and I keep returning to it.

39 episodes is too long, it takes away the depth every episode could have. We learned the other guys' stories one by one and then went back to them again. They should have taken just one episode each. Nanami episodes can stay though.

Then that whole Black Rose Arc was so unnecessary, bored the shit out of me.

But the end was really good, I think it was worth all my time desu.

Having the problems each character faces "taking precedence" over the plot is a problem. They should go hand-in-hand, such that the individuals and their unique experiences enrich the plot. Which was certainly not the case because a lot of the characters faded in and out with no clear impact on the ending. Evangelion succeeds at the balance of individual and overarching story where Utena fails, and fails quite miserably imo

I just finished it recently and I agree that it was too long, and quite repetitive. The focus of each arc may have slightly differed ie the Black Rose arc had duels for its own reasons, but the duels themselves were really overdone. I enjoyed learning about everyones individual struggles, but the entire show could have been done in 24 episodes easily.

I was expecting a lot out of this show, and I think it fell short. Looking forward to watching the movie

I somewhat disagree in that most of the cast of Evangelion was ultimately irrelevant in terms of the main plot, that is, Instrumentality. All of the actions they're involved with in order to fight the angels really have no bearing on the Instrumentality Project. In Evangelion, you have, in loose terms, a monster of the week format that focuses more on character struggles with hints of the big picture, then suddenly a shift in gear to the machinations of the masterminds (Seele vs. Gendo and End of Evangelion). Utena is similar, but replaces the angels with duels, and then you have the sudden reveal of Akio's schemes.

Now, certainly, Utena was slow, repetitive, bloated, etc. and it did not help that every single duel was vs. Utena (particularly in the Black Rose Arc), but my point was that even though it and Evangelion address different themes, there are overlaps, as well as with the presentation and format.
