There were 365 Friends in the game, 7 created just for the anime (although most have only made background cameos...), so 372.

Then, there are 3 Friends who have just been officially revealed but aren't in anything (Two chickens and Pallas' cat) and the upcoming Friend version of Osamu Tezuka's Phoenix. So, 376 in total so far.

There are also a couple of Friends in the game who are completely different looking in the anime, like American Beaver, don't know if those should be counted separately, and I guess American Beaver might be the only one different enough to look like a different character altogether anyway. Picture related was the American Beaver Friend from the game.

I am kind of feeling a bit messed up since I am thinking of Savanna hypothesis shifting to variability selection where the friends have to increase their ability to cope with changing habitat came about the creation of humanity.

Could it be that it's not just Kaban retracing human evolution, but that we are seeing how hominins become the genus Homo through Serval as she cope with various habitats that are drastically different to the Savanna?

After all, Kaban and Serval didn't overcome those different habitats using genetic adaptation through several generation, but rather evolving behaviors and structures that can cope with these environments, which makes the two of them increasingly fitin their variability.

Toki wanted friends, and Alpaca wanted 'customers' to visit her shop and serve them tea. Since Alpaca is not being paid, her desire for customers is, obliquely, also a desire for community. What Alpaca got out of the exchange was just pleasure at being useful. Humans are prosocial creatures and voluntarily form relationships that aren't based on sex or protection. Kaban solves the problems that drive them apart from each other and we see them forming a small community.

I rewatched them all yesterday to try and get a timeline of information - what happened when, and when do the characters and the audience first learn about them?

I'm still a little confused on a couple of points which have probably been covered in the myriad of threads this week, but I haven't been following them. Obviously there are many more questions that haven't been answered in the context of the show, but I feel like the ones below have been and I just haven't really figured them out yet.

Did Sandstar and friends exist before humans ever came to the island (this is suggested by the recording where old-Serval thought the humans were aliens)? What about ceruleans?
The final recordings seem to be a sequence leading up to a fight with a big black cerulean like the one in episode 11, and you can piece together the purpose of the filter, and the problems caused by Sandstar Raw (incidentally I've seen this translated as Raw, Low, and Rho - is there a consensus to the correct translation?), but by this time the park had presumably long been closed and evacuated. And yet the Lucky Beasts that are still around are programmed to recognize high concentrations of Sandstar Raw and issue evacuation warnings, even though this wouldn't have been necessary to do at the time and couldn't have been done afterward. What's the explanation for this?

However, you fail to take to account that Boss does act to preserve the friends. Even in Mirai's recording, it's said that friends got evacuated as well, and you should factor in the change in boss's behavior as he does answer to the friends' queries as the series progress itself to this point.

Well, the change to habitat is something that we saw as Kaban and Serval trekked around the park, and remember the owls making the comment that living in the area that isn't right for you will shorten your lifespan.

The best display of variability is when Kaban made that makeshift Igloo, and then we see Serval opting for the orthodox view room and switching herself to a diurnal lifestyle in keeping to Kaban and to better fit the demands of their journey.

Yeah, but who would have programmed such a warning in the first place? By the time they understood the dangers of Sandstar Rho, everyone had already been evacuated.

A weirder episode to nail down a theme for would be 2. Otter wants to have fun and Jaguar wants to help friends navigate the river. Both of them are sort of dumb, however, and get stuck in repetitive patterns that do nothing to advance their fun-having or river-navigating agendas respectively. In short, they behave like animals. Though Jaguar is industrious and Otter is fun-loving, that doesn't seem to mean anything for the theme.

When Kaban arrives she introduces them to new patterns of behavior; new ways to have fun, new ways to get across the river and to help others do so. Jaguar and Otter continue to be enamored with Kaban's weird bridge long after Kaban herself has gone. It could be that the idea is that humans can change their behaviors, whereas animals are stuck with their evolved patterns. Even humans get into patterns like that where they just live automatically in accordance with their habits, but that's not what we think of as ideal. So coming out of the Savannah, where life is simple and easily lived by habit (run away from ceruleans, fend for yourself, drink if you're thirsty, play if you want), there are more complicated problems in the Jungle which require more than what we know or do already.

The designation Bossu gives Kaban is 'temporary park guide', so he knows that's she's not a park guide. So he's either making a real decision, or he has this strange routine programmed into him. A routine to deputize a random visitor as a park guide if they get a hold of both feathers doesn't make sense. If I go to disney and steal a cast member uniform, their first priority will be to find and eject me, not deputize me as honorary Mickey. What would definitely make sense is programming the bossus to prevent visitors who somehow manage to acquire both feathers from gaining administrator permission over the park.

So the point of that scene of bossu registering that she looks like Mirai is more likely the opposite--registering that an unauthorized user has acquired both feathers, and rejecting his preprogrammed response.
