IMO it went down at the start of the Edolas arc.
It had terrible pacing, it showed that it wanted to stay as purely shounen as it could get, it refused to make characters get genuine development, and overall was just a failure.

It's really a shame, I think it had fantastically huge potential, especially with the art style, the concept, etc. But it definitely fell flat and burned out. Doesn't help that the author definitely made it irrecoverable after the Time Skip Arc.

It's around the time you should have. The arc before that being the Dragon form arc was atrocious. The guild leader saying Natsu had reached his peak power was an incredibly retarded writing decision, considering how far this manga has now come and how that power scale has been flattened into earth. Not only that, but it showed too that m-muh friends always fucking win.

It also showed how limited the scope precision of abilities had to be to actually be effective. Instead of coming up with clever uses for fire or ice, he essentially just made it "Just keep beating the shit out of the enemy! Throw all your fire! Friends are why you keep throwing fire!", which is just bad writing.

Which is once again a huge shame, especially considering the first island arc which revolved around Gray and him learning to use his powers more effectively and seeing results from it and in honesty, was a great representation of the growth Mashima should have continuously approached. There were even huge growth points between Erza's island arc, and Laxus takeover which had good points for potential growth.

Overall, this series is atrocious, and if you aren't only here for the tits or to see how far of a downward spiral this series can go, you might fall into the same category of autistic fandom as Sonic. Mashima is one of the worst of his kind writers, and there's almost no point in Fairy Tail between 400 chapters where he tries to prove that wrong. Kind of embarrassing when your most developed characters are almost entirely irrelevant to the story with the exception of 3-4 arcs.

That arc is criminal in terms of everything Shounen. Which is shitty. It had a great concept, I feel like he could have redeemed himself and did some great story advancement by taking away magic and opened up to more of the writing and political side of FT which is what it really fucking needs, is some dynamic and introspective story writing and development. I've never read a story with such poor development. Fucking 1 Fish 2 Fish Red Fish Blue Fish has better development than this shit. Instead he went a retarded route, even by shounen standards, and did completely fucking nothing that we didn't already know before then. All it did was take away Mystogan. Who did nothing anyway other than save people like 2 times?

Aside from the female Dio chick that Wendy's friend beat, Jellal hasn't jobbed at all and he legitimate reason on why he lost some of his fights.

For starters, it means a lot. You probably skimmed through the shit, but Oracion Seis are known to be the strongest group of dark mages without Lost Magic. The first group to ultimately embarrass Fairy Tail, along with several other powerful mages. The fact that he manages to defeat them with ease speaks for itself.

He was apart of the magic council for fucks sake. He could've just grabbed a severly weakened Erza and Wendy who ya' know, just finished fighting several of these overpowered army crushing fuck depleting most of his magic.

The thing about Jellal throughout the ENTIRE series is he never charged in without a backup in mind, but he just went full retard this entire arc.
