Well Cross Mix takes place a couple years after Ran->Sem. Riko was originally a low ranked member when she joined, but when we see her in Cross Mix she's now working as one of the top instructors, and she even states that only high ranking members can have lessons with her. So I think in those 2 years she managed to pass all the training and 'tests' to become not just a high ranking members but an instructor too!

She isn't just some 'regular' model she's THE legendary top super model! And In the VN Majima uses Riko's celebrity to lure wealthier and more powerful people to join his cult. He throws huge lavish parties where they only use Riko all night for entertainment. So, yes, having her is extremely beneficial and profitable for the Lab.

This is why I said he may have just promoted Riko out of favoritism instead of skills.
