Yeah, that's a big part of what this adaptation is inevitably going to miss.
Light had a massive, world-eclipsing ego, but he was justified in thinking highly of himself. He was pretty much an extreme of over-achieving technical genius on top of being attractive and socially capable. He had everything and knew exactly how much he had.

The point was that even when you're someone like that, the lengths he went to and the decisions he made were still difficult to justify. He was the closest a person is capable of getting to someone that should decide who lives and dies, which is what made the drama interesting. There was an uncomfortable moral ambiguity to his actions being disgusting and his justification being intellectual. He thought he was infallible because he was damn close to being infallible, which made his falliblity all the more interesting.

If you strip all that away and leave him as just some angsty, insecure teenager desperate to justify his mountain of flaws and glaring lack of social aptitude with unwarranted pride, then it just becomes pathetic and morally unambiguous. It raises no interesting questions except "why do we let mentally ill losers free in society?"
